Video by @TimLaman. A male Lesser Bird-of-Paradise shakes his incredible plumes and dances around his branch calling out to attract females. I’m sharing this footage shot in West Papua, Indonesia to remind us all about the incredible richness of these forests. Papua’s forests and those across the whole big island of New Guinea, represent the largest intact rainforest in all of the Asia-Pacific and are a global store of carbon, biodiversity, and potential sustainable tourism for the people of Papua if they are protected. Swipe to see a few behind-the-scenes shots of the small camouflaged perch I built high in the canopy of a nearby tree to film this. There was no place to build a bigger platform, and I didn’t want to disturb the birds, so I sat on a branch, tied in my tripod to another branch in front of me, and hung camo cloth all around me. As you can see in the last shot, it blends in pretty well. Across Indonesia, bats are frequently traded in wildlife markets for consumption. Many months later we now know the COVID-19 pandemic is a direct result of irresponsible wildlife trade. 🇨🇱 Loro Choroy 🇺🇳 Enicognathus leptorhynchus 🇺🇸 Slender-billed Parakeet 🏳️🌈 Choroy Es el único loro ENDÉMICO de Chile, podrán escuchar que el Tricahue también lo es, pero lo que es endémico de nuestro país del Loro Tricahue es la sub-especie que habita aquí, en Argentina por ejemplo, es conocido como Loro Barranquero.⛰️ Choroy viene del mapuzungún, que hace referencia a una persona bulliciosa y habladora. Quizás sea el origen de cuando se dice que una persona es choro o chora, tiene mucho más sentido que una referencia al marisco. 🤷 Antiguamente sus poblaciones llegaban hasta el Río Aconcagua, pero por lo injustos que hemos sido con esta especie hoy la podemos encontrar desde el Maule hasta Chiloé. Digo que hemos sido injustos porque en el pasado su persecución fue implacable, fue perseguido por alimentarse de los cultivos y árboles frutales de los sectores agrícolas. También ha sido capturado para ser puesto en venta en el mercado negro como mascota (vender o tener en la casa un Choroy es ILEGAL👮). Y sin duda lo que más ha repercutido en su desplazamiento, es la deforestación y fragmentación de los bosques más antiguos dónde esta ave nidifica.🐣 Su alimentación entonces consiste en cereales, granos, frutas y depende en gran medida de lo que el agricultor chileno quiera vender. Y el muy patudo no solo se alimenta de estos recursos, si no que también, es capaz de pasar la noche descansando en estos mismos lugares.💤 🔍 Descripción: Loro grande (~42 cm.) Cuerpo completamente verde claro y homogéneo, que se torna más oscuro y con tintes calipso en las alas. Parche rojo que va de ojo a ojo. Al altura del abdomen se distingue una sutil mancha roja. Cola roja. Patas y pico negro, este último largo en su maxilar y que cae como gancho sobre la mandíbula. Words haven’t come easy these past few months but it feels like it’s time to check-in. Today is world snake day and that means lovely pictures and videos of one of my favorite animals. I also want to take a few minutes and share what has been shared with me from my time with them. It’s okay to move slowly, and sometimes not at all. Rest is a necessity and doesn’t need to be earned. Be meaningful in your actions. Do them with purpose. Your energy is finite, spend it wisely. Just as a snake sheds, growth comes when it’s needed, not necessarily when it’s wanted. And it looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s sweeping waves, a total transformation. Other times it’s in pieces and it’s difficult. Maybe painful. But don’t pull, be patient. Eat instinctively. Looking at you ball pythons. And lastly, it’s okay to walk lightly on the earth. Big steps aren’t needed to create change or live a meaningful life. We are in the calm before the kiwi storm, kiwi across the country are beginning to sit on their eggs doing their best to stay safe from introduced pests and predators. Soon those eggs will be collected from the wild then where they will be incubated, hatched and raised before being released to new pest and predator free homes (like @sanctuary_mountain with this kiwi now lives). It is also critically endangered, and the focus of considerable conservation attention. Before humans arrived it was common throughout New Zealand’s forests, but predation by introduced mammals brought it to the brink of extinction - a low point of about 50 birds only in the mid 1990s. The transfer of the whole population to predator-free islands and intensive intervention in every stage of its life has led to a steady increase in numbers. Population: A total of 210 birds was known in June 2020. All carry radio transmitters and are intensively monitored and managed. Distribution: They disappeared from the North Island by about 1930, but persisted longer in the wetter parts of the South Island. The last birds died out in Fiordland in the late 1980s. A population of less than two hundred birds was discovered on Stewart Island in 1977, but this population was also declining due to cat predation. During the 1980s and 1990s the entire known population was transferred to Whenua Hou/Codfish Island off the coast of Stewart Island, Maud Island in the Marlborough Sounds and Hauturu/Little Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Since then birds have been moved between Whenua Hou, Maud Island and Hauturu, as well as to and from newly predator-free Chalky and Anchor Islands in Fiordland. Kakapo now occur only on forested islands, though they previously appeared to have inhabited a wide range of vegetation types. Threats: Adult kakapo are vulnerable to predation by cats and stoats, and their eggs and chicks can be killed by rats. Females alone incubate eggs and raise chicks. As they must spend long periods away from the nest feeding, eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation when the nest is unattended. Pangolin Specialist Group member, Professor Wu Shibao, who has worked in pangolin conservation for over 25 years, talks to the South China Normal University about Chinas recent announcement upgrading pangolins to the highest level of protection and is positive about the impact the protections will have on pangolins. Chinese pangolins are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. According to Professor Wu Shibao, the species has declined by up to 95% and Chinese pangolins are now rarely seen in the wild. Repost from @sanghapangolinproject: A few days ago we received a beautiful black-bellied pangolin into our care. This young female came in weighing 670 g, a bit dehydrated and spooked after a long journey on the road from a village outside the forest reserve. The individual who brought her in told us she was saved by hunters, but we are still investigating the circumstances around her capture to better understand the situation. The @DzangaSangha park management authorities have been notified and we will keep them updated. We are so pleased to see that the local communities are aware of our work and wanting to help pangolins, and we want to continue to make sure that people respond to these situations in the best way possible. Ultimately, we strive to inform and educate on how to minimize interference with wildlife and encourage people to leave pangolins in the forest where they belong. For now, she is being closely monitored and is responding well to the ants we are feeding her. Ive told the story of Bubbles and Squeak, but Ive been putting off telling the tale of Lazarus. TW: animal cruelty, poison. Lazarus and his brother were the first two rats Ive ever known and loved, even though our time together was so short. Lazarus and his brother were found in the dirt, covered with cockroaches. They were poisoned by their own mothers milk. Even in his last moments, Lazarus was searching for the comfort of his mother. He wasnt aggressive, he wasnt angry. He just wanted his mother. HELP NEEDED! There’s some wonderful people @manyanamatters protesting the destruction of a forest on the south coast of NSW. Manyana is a small coastal village south of Nowra and north of Batemans Bay. It was hit hard by the recent bushfires. There is a little refuge of pristine, unburnt forest left which is essential for wildlife but it is earmarked to be bulldozed this Monday for housing development. See photo 2. Destruction of habitat is the elephant in the room of animal welfare. We donate to rescue injured wildlife but the very reason they are injured or heading to extinction is often because of lack of habitat. When we bulldoze forests, we bulldoze existing homes of birds, mammals, insects and reptiles. This is what I know. The land was sold to Ozy Homes years ago and approved for development; only a small number of blocks have been sold. There are ongoing talks between the @shoalhavencitycouncil the Community and NSW State Government @robstokesmp about alternative options including a possible land swap or re-zoning. However I’m told the bulldozers are heading in to destroy this unburnt area on Monday. Things are changing daily but this is what you can do to help. 1. NOW. Sign the petition link in my bio started by local firefighter Bill Eger who risked his life to save the bush. He has set up such a heartfelt petition - anyone from anywhere in the world can sign this. Petition link in my bio. 2. PROTEST TOMORROW (SATURDAY) head to the Manyana Matters facebook or instagram page @manyanamatters they are organising a protest tomorrow (Saturday 23rd May) at 10am.
