John Hurt took up the guitar at age nine and played ragtime at local parties throughout his younger years. He was discovered by Okeh Records in 1927 when they passed through his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He soon left and began recording in cities like Memphis and New York. Hurt played more of a soft style of Blues, had not performed in large venues until later in life when he played at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963. No surprise given that #theking sold out every single performance in their Las Vegas showroom. Shoofey’s daughter Teri Lyn (photo 2) was only 4 years old when Presley first opened there in 1969, but she has special memories of a childhood involving Elvis’ residencies in the entertainment capital; “He’d let some of the hotel executives’ kids build forts in his closet and we would crawl around all the clothes with the sequins and rhinestones. I remember him bringing me a giant teddy bear, about 6 feet tall, for my birthday. And he would have candy bars set up, like other people have alcohol bars, with big jars of candy, every kind you could imagine. Here’s why you should take chances👇🏼 • At 17 years old, I was cast as a teen reporter on a @pbs news magazine called “Checking It Out,” which was like a teen version of @60minutes • Geraldo Rivera was at the absolute peak of his career doing documentaries on 20/20 and everyone wanted a shot at interviewing him • My boss on the show told me that if I wanted to be a “real” reporter, I needed to learn to cold call people • I called the 20/20 office, asked to speak to Geraldo and was met by this tough but nice Puerto Rican girl on the other end of the line — his assistant Joanne • She was impressed by my courage to take my shot and call up to speak with Geraldo so she told him about me and proceeded to ask me to come meet him • This is why I always tell you to call everyone you want to meet — it won’t always work but you get a lot of passes for having the guts to do it • Geraldo let me interview him for my show AND go on a sweat shop raid for 20/20, one of his best investigative pieces, which made me look great for my bosses • He also gave me a recommendation to work in Boston when I was 19 at CBS in Boston, which solidified my journey of producing and reporting on a national level • I credit Geraldo with helping me move mountains with my career, helping me believe anything is possible, and being able to impact you as you read this now ❤️ · #DontBuyShoesBuyBuildings - @nelygalan on Instagram
