Shattered 💤 it’s been a while since I ran along the ridge. I’m a bit weather obsessed at the moment and with rain forecast from tomorrow I needed this! ⁣ ⁣ My PT used to have digs at me for choosing 90mins of cardio over 20mins HITT 🤣 For me, running in the mountains is as much about mental health as physical. I like the serotonin buzz, the views, the peace and the empowered feeling. ⁣ ⁣ As sunshine and vit D levels drop in the uk, it’s more important than ever to try to get outside 🌳 ⁣ ⁣ I always get asked .. so this is the ridge up to Mam Tor above Castleton in the Peak District. A favourite with hikers, mountain bikers and fell runners. It’s a fairly steep climb to the top and the ridge is like a dinosaur 🦕 but well marked footpaths and the best views! This time last year Ben and I set out on an adventure we will never forget. An adventure which really started it all for @hill.country.collective We booked almost a year in advance to go out to @atjanfestival with @lovetrailsfestival , with very little understanding of the terrain we would be racing. That land was the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of 18 rocky volcanic islands. We arrived not really knowing what to expect from the place, other than it being described as a love child between Scotland and Iceland... We ended up exploring the islands for 6 days, it surpassed all of our wildest expectations. Only to be capped off by the race itself. Which was a grueling yet highly rewarding adventure. Thanks to @lovetrailsfestival for putting on such a rad event, it gave us a reason to explore one of the most insanely beautiful places in the world. Well, after six days of hiking through the Himalayas, we had to call our trek to the Everest Basecamp “unsuccessful”. Due to heavy rains in combination with a glacier breaking free higher in the mountains, multiple bridges have been deemed unsafe for crossing (see photo 2). While unfortunate, I don’t consider our trek a failure by any means. According to our guide, we still reached an elevation of over 16,000 feet, which is higher than any peak in the continental United States. All this means to me, is that I have to come back and try again. Maybe next time, I’ll even be able to walk on flat ground at that elevation without feeling like I’m suffocating 😅 - @christian_curtis4 on Instagram

I DID IT! 🥾🏔 ~ Reaching the summit of Mount Snowdon was such a proud moment for me! 4 years ago, I was sent down Ben Nevis, without reaching the top, the guide feared I wasn’t fit enough to make it. And tbh I really wasn’t. Ever since then I’ve had a fear of hiking even though I loved it! Today I conquered that fear with Mount Snowdon. Everything about today was beautiful. *NOT just another hiking post* 👇🏼 So it’s Friday and I’ve actually had quite a lot of conversations about mental health this week. Reason being, there have been more suicide deaths than coronavirus deaths this week. The toll this current situation is taking on all of is massive and with said, it’s really important to have an awareness for mental health, how others may be feeling during this time and the steps to take to work on these issues. With local lockdown restrictions back in place in my area, a change in the weather and just fatigue after a generally hard month; it’s been a lot lately so I’m often asked ‘How can you be bothered to climb those mountains every weekend?’ 😴 My answer... “it’s the best thing for me” 💪🏼 Research shows that spending time in nature is good for both your mental and physical wellbeing. Climbing mountains is hard, but what you get out of it is so worth it. It clears the extra head noise, is a complete de-stress and is actually really fun. Hitting summits week in and week out builds confidence, builds both physical and mental strength and builds awareness of what’s really important. When you’re being blown to bits on the worst weather day ever or have the clearest of views, you realise how insignificant you and some of our problems are; a little dot on the side of the mountain and all your worries left back at the car (don’t leave your butties there too - was really annoyed about that) ⛰ It’s hard to explain but if you’re already a lover of the great outdoors, you know exactly what I mean - if you’re not.. get out there this weekend and you’ll see what I mean 🧠💙 - @melonthemove_ on Instagram

The last couple of days in The Lakes were gorgeous. Great visibility, mild and a lot cooler than the recent warm burst. It was also nice to catch up with a few faces. The route yesterday didnt take in Great Gable but a good decision from @jessicamather91 to add it as a quick out and back. KOKS! opens for Summer 2020 The Faroe Islands Michelin 2* restaurant   The KOKS team is pleased to announce that our restaurant will re-open on July 8th in the scenic mountain valley at Leynavatn. This has been a challenging period for us, as for everyone else, but we have worked hard during our enforced closure to make the KOKS dining experience even better. We have been using the lock-down period to work on improvements in sustainability and innovation at KOKS! These include building a new greenhouse, increasing our free-range chicken flock and growing a wider range of herbs and leaf vegetables to reduce our dependence on imported goods. Today is the anniversary of the Mass trespass of Kinder Scout that established our “right to roam” and led to National Parks being established. In light of the covid situation and lack of races; as well as the fact that I have had the past two months to train in, and explore the beautiful Lake District, I have decided to attempt the Bob Graham round. Its a 102(ish)km and 8000m round, taking in 42 peaks. Ill be doing it solo (which means no official certificate...) but since minimizing contact with others is a priority, it is the style I would rather pursue. The 3 days spent on the #cumbriaway were fab... I have always hiked but a tiny voice inside my head always told me 9 miles was my limit, I couldnt possibly walk further, I did once manage 12 and thought it was a fluke. Over the last 2 weeks I have smashed those unhelpful voices out of the ball park. Some days we walked 24 miles but on average at least 16 miles a day. What I have come to understand about myself is many things are just a state of mind and you can push on through them and fear can be overcome. Plus I dont like people talking to me when Im in the hiking zone 😂😂 What today especially taught me is that fear is OK too. When you are right on an edge of a track with a long drop down and winds are gusting at 45mph fear keeps you safe because it forces you to make the right decisions. So sadly I am laying in my nice comfy bed instead of being piss wet through on a cumbria fell 😁 The fells, Dales, mountains and hills will still be there when we can get out again. . . GENDER AND SEXUALITY - I really wanted to have a talk about discovering your sexuality and gender identity, especially alongside having a mental illness. So here it is. I personally describe myself as gay. I use that as an umbrella term, as I have also struggled with gender dysphoria. I admit to having repressed that particular issue for a long time, literally because I saw it was too difficult to address alongside all my other issues. I still haven’t exactly come to terms with whatever the hell I am comfortable as, but I’m doing my best. I know that I prefer to dress in a ‘masculine’ way, yet I also hate to try to fit into one category. So essentially, I don’t have a fucking clue what my gender identity is. And that’s OKAY. If you’re in the same box as me - don’t stress over it. (I know, easy to say, difficult to do) It’s okay to not know exactly who you are yet. It’s okay if you never know. Just do what feels comfortable. Dress how you feel comfortable, and don’t be afraid to ask others to accommodate your preferences. Gender is fluid, as they say, and while it’s confusing, just remember that you don’t have to fit into a box. You don’t have to have a label. The same applies for sexuality. Who you like is YOUR business. You are not obliged to put a label on yourself to make other people happy. And it’s okay to have a label, if that’s what you want. Remember - it is YOU. And you are the one that matters he most! Being LGBT+ is associated with having mental illnesses, which I personally believe is partly because of the stigma that somehow still remains in schools. Yewbarrow is lower than Scafell Pike but the view was 👌 below you can see Waswater, the deepest lake in England, our campsite, which is the green triangle of trees in the valley, and above is Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. I was worried after Tala’s quite slow climb of Scafell Pike that she was finally starting to show her age but the next day she was happily scrambling and running around on Yewbarrow like a young pup so I think it was just the cold and strong wind that was putting her off. Last Friday, some of our Leeds FAS team used their #volunteering day to take on the challenge of climbing Snowdon. The challenge took 4.5hrs through fierce winds - typically the sun came out when it was time to head back to base. This Christmas I escaped to Northern Ireland to visit my sister and family at their beautiful country home in Coleraine. This was a Narnia experience. Sometimes in life you have those moments. Heart bursting, eyes watering, lump in the throat, grateful to be alive moments. This weekend was absolutely magical, I’m so full of gratitude and I know for an absolute fact that it wouldn’t have been the same if I had been drinking. . 
I know I would have been preoccupied with which pubs to go to and how late they were open, looking for any opportunity to keep drinking. I wouldn’t have been present for the amazing food and conversation. I would have been hungover in the mornings, slept in late and missed the beautiful quiet morning hikes and breathtaking views. I would have dragged myself to see a sight before giving up to look for a lunchtime pint to take the edge off of the hangover. . 
I’m coming up for 3 years sober and it feels so normal now, a stillness and stability that underpins my day to day that I rarely talk about in real life anymore. Looking back, I would have never imagined that I would be sober this long, one month seemed utterly impossible, let alone one year. 
So to anyone who is just starting out in their sobriety, to anyone who’s trying again, to anyone who’s trying moderating or to anyone who is just plain fucking TRYING full stop. Hang on, because there will be these moments. These heart bursting, eyes watering, lump in the throat, grateful to be alive moments. It might seem impossible now but they WILL come. MENTAL HEALTH • • I had an anxiety attack at 5.50am this morning right before work. It is not normal for me to suffer anxiety with such severity but this hasn’t been a normal week. Your mind can only take on so much, when it’s full it’s full and then it’s going to start to leak out. And leaks are messy right? This morning mine came in the form of a rapid heart beat, struggling to breath normally and tears. The calm only came from letting the people around me know it was happening and allowing them to help. It’s not always easy to share but what can really help is realising that telling people you are feeling sick mentally is no different than telling people you have a cold • • Thank you to the loving people who I had around me today (and everyday) both at home and at work, your kindness helped me through 🧡 • • We are all human and none of us are invincible. Among other things this range contains arguably the finest example of a corrie or com in Ireland. The walk to Com Shinaun (Coumshingaun) is a demanding but short hike offering majestic views. Once the source of a small glacier that flowed off the Comeragh hills, we are left with a deep bowl in the mountainside which measures about a kilometre in length & breadth and with a depth of 400 metres on the massive back wall. We can all play our role in helping the earth, and these are my suggestions 1- vote for the planet (both at the ballot box and with your wallet) 💰☑️. Individual action is important, however the most significant protections are made when policy makers and business executives prioritise sustainability 2-eat less meat and dairy🥑🍉🥦. The largest portion of your individual carbon footprint is most likely food, and animal products have a far higher carbon and environmental footprint than plant products. In fact, animal agriculture has a greater carbon footprint than cars, planes, ships and trucks combined ✈️ 3- buy less clothing👗👠. Fashion is one of the biggest polluting industries in the world, with fast fashion having the worst impacts. It is also one of the most exploitative industries, with workers unable to make a living wage in horrible working conditions. When you do need new clothes, try second hand or sustainable brands. In adittion to being more ethical, second hand clothing is cheaper and sustainable brands tend to have a longer lifespan 🧥 All this being said, just do your best.
