Amazing weekend harvesting rye on the family ranch in the Mattole Valley, Humboldt County, CA. Our little field of 4.5 acres produced almost 12,000 pounds of rye😯!! We planted and dry farmed an organic heirloom California Merced Rye. Can’t wait to get some whiskey batches going with this grain. Today I keep thinking about Bill Wittliff, Gus McCrae and how a grape ripens when it sees another grape. “Uva uvam varia vivendo fit” is on Capt. Gus McCrae’s sign for the Lonesome Dove Ranch. The motto is never explained, it’s just there. The joke is that Gus claims to know Latin (and a lot of other languages), but his knowledge is tenuous at best. The direct translation is garbled, and I like to think about it a lot. It translates, “a grape changes its color (ripens) when it sees another grape.” If you think about the story and how each character transforms, you could take it as, “we are changed by the lives around us.” Lonesome Dove is such a weird book. It is weird that I still think about it and want to share it all the time (somebody get this kid to a book club). And it is kinda weird that it means so much to so many Texans - for some, there’s the Bible, and then there’s Lonesome Dove. It’s ostensibly about cowboys at the end of the Wild West- and it very much is, in the best and most entertaining, complicated way- but people see a lot of themselves, or their family, or their friends in these characters. I love that so many people see themselves in the story, like I do. Or, they want to be like some of the people in the story, like I do. Or, they haven’t read it yet, but they’ll love it, and I’ll bother them until they do (message me and I will buy you the book)! They’re the kind of people I like to hang around. I COULD BARELY WALK...is not a good feeling when your an athlete for a living! The cause of the pain in a disc issue between L5 and SI ya know the one in your lower back. - My wife called @fashion_posse (Tiffany Cooper) because she had heard of how much he had helped @the_official_tufcooper so thanks to them for making the connection for us. - Anyway the pain was endless and I couldn’t get away from it. It seemed to never end...if was hell not gonna lie. - We got him on the phone and he said with a calm voice yah no worries I can get ya fix up today...I thought he was crazy butt I went anyway. - To make a long strong short he worked on me for 1 1/2 hrs and I felt like I could run sprints! He basically re activates Dormant muscles and somehow takes all the pain away. I didn’t even know that was possible. As I was there I was looking on the wall at all the NFL players that use him from all over the US and I couldn’t help but be thankful and humbled that he would take time out of his busy day off to help me. Undoubtedly, the purpose of this life is to love all unconditionally. This is what separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls. . I personally dont care what anyone has done, good or bad, epic or lame; it doesnt matter at all. What inspires me is seeing someone love others for no reason at all; someone doing good deeds that nobody will ever hear about; somebody silently sacrificing for the benefit of others. . Thats what separates the alphas from the betas because to get to this kind of unconditional love, you must go through hell first. Every part of the ego must be burnt up in the intense fire of deep understanding before true, unconditional love emerges. Its not a fake love or something acted out. No, its a genuine love that cannot be contained and just makes you want to love all beings. It doesnt mean you wont drop one who must be dropped, it means such things only occur as a necessity when the situation arises; and thus, happen naturally, without thought, hate, or ego. . It is so easy to hate, to be sad, to whine and complain, we all know countless who do this, starting with ourselves. Everywhere we look we can find these ones. However, how many have you met that love unconditionally? These ones are extremely rare and we must learn from these silent alphas. . If one as ignorant as me can figure this out, then surely we all can hahahahaha. . Alpha up; love all. COVID, Black Lives Matter, the Supreme Court ruling, more. Im trying to honor that in-betweenness by not forcing words into definitive social media boxes quite yet. • I will say this though - when I guided full seasons, I remember loving the escape, the tuning out. I didnt pay attention to the news, to the communities around me, to anything but my immediate surroundings (this is, uh, privilege, to be clear). • So for guides in that place still, I remind us - guiding, like so many things, is ultimately a system, an organization, an industry. Its hierarchical. Its driven by money. There are both overt and covert power structures. And just by being in it, even if youre just a guide, you already have power. You have access, relationships. Duty. • What are we doing with that power? Can this industry be reformed, built as it was on misogyny, classism, racism, and colonialism? Or do we start from the ground up? • An exercise: meditate on what the outdoors gives you. Those feelings of freedom, safety, escape, expansiveness. Really feel it, breathe it. Then remember how few have access to that feeling. My heart is telling me to share with you the heart and soul behind our beautiful honeymoon cabin in my giveaway. He supported my crazy idea of buying acreage when we couldn’t really afford it, then he built my dream home which tripled our mortgage, he rebuilt this original homestead cabin by hand to help me take on fewer weddings, he built the cutest goat barn just because I wanted it 😉, and now he’s building our 2nd homestead cabin on his days off. He works as hard on this 4th building as he did on the first even knowing there’s 1-2 more beyond that to complete our project (Brides keep following, this will be gorgeous when completed). He supports and works towards every crazy idea I have. I’ve realized that’s kind of how it’s been since my dad passed away close to 4 years ago. There’s still that feeling of something missing but it gets more “normal” over the years. . The cool part of this human experience though is that from time to time, he pays me a visit in my dreams. Sometimes it’s just a quick passing by and other times it’s an actual “catch up” conversation. . The one thing I’ve noticed is that he shows up in my dreams every so often almost just to say hello and make sure things are going good. . I’m not sure what you all believe and maybe the experts would say it’s just nothing more than my brain doing it’s thing but I think it’s more than that. It sure seems like a check in to me. A way to say “I might be gone but I’m still around.” . Whether it’s real or imagination, it’s pretty cool to see the old man from time to time. Today’s Friday feature for the “100 Buckle Project” is Kevin Skiles (@skiles100miles) of Mill Valley, CA!⠀ ⠀ Living ever the charmed life with his two daughters, son, and wonderfully supportive wife, Kevin is a contractor who enjoys designing and building homes across Northern California with his company, Urban Building Workshop. In addition to running and his work, he enjoys surfing with his kids as well as serving the community of Mill Valley as the volunteer Chair of the Planning Commission.⠀ ⠀ His first 100-miler was at the 2013 San Diego 100, where the heat topped at 110-degrees and had the lowest finisher rate in the race’s history.⠀ ⠀ Kevin’s running resumé also includes: ⠀ 🔹 # of 100-mile races completed: 7⠀ 🔹 First 100-Miler: San Diego 100 🔹 Bucket List race: Ultra Trail Oman⠀ 🔹 Favorite trail: North Side/Mount Tam (Marin County) 🔹 Shoe of choice: @montrailrunning⠀ ⠀ The buckle in Kevin’s photo (2nd photo) is from his favorite 100-mile race he’s ever done: the 2015 Western States. Besides having the perfect day unfold at his ultra-dream race, he earned the silver WS belt buckle with his family on hand to crew, including his father who got to see him cross the finish line before his untimely passing a couple years later.
