Commitment to community 🌎That was on full display today at our “Really Big” Food Drive ❤️ From volunteers and donors of all ages to Operation Hope employees to local elected officials, we were thrilled to see so many come out to help feed and care for our neighbors in need. The brainchild of enterprising and creative Ludlowe High School student @a_mckinnis12, the drive was also organized by @alexis.harrison.376, Helene Daly and Heather Dubrosky. This was the 20th drive organized by these women, many of which have benefited Operation Hope during the pandemic. We met our goal of FILLING A POD with non perishable donations PLUS $2,450 in cash donations and $790 in store gift cards. Thank you all for giving me grace as I collected my thoughts.🖤I feel strongly that a black square is not enough from my photo business and if you follow me on my personal page and/or my mental health advocacy page, you know that I have not been quiet about the #blacklivesmatter movement. But I wanted to think deeply about how I could do something with my photography to be in service of the Black community right now and share more than just solidarity. Plus, I wanted to honor the #amplifymelanatedvoices challenge and did not want to take up space in your feeds last week with a message about my photography business. . With all that said: solidarity is the baseline of support I’d like to offer right now. While I cannot begin to understand your grief, anger, frustration, heartbreak and fear, I stand with you in this fight. For me, that looks like marching, donating, signing petitions, emailing representatives, reading, listening, posting online and speaking up, but that also means using my photography to tangibly offer support. I don’t share my gameplan to fish for praise, but instead so that I can be held accountable. I also welcome any feedback as it relates to being a better ally and I promise it will never be met with defensiveness. . Here is my immediate game plan! . 1. My hometown of Middletown, Pennsylvania is losing its local newspaper. My parents and my sister are the 4th and 5th generation owners of Press & Journal. 166 years ago the Press & Journal printed its first issue and today was its last. Thats one civil war, two world wars, multiple recessions and depressions to elaborate the timeline. Local newspapers are something that most towns have had disappear, unnoticed, long ago and been replaced with facebook and social media and most dont even know what its like to have had a local newspaper, and by local I dont mean statewide, I mean townwide. One where town borough councils, municipalities and police are held accountable and the public informed is the responsibility a paper inherits and takes on. This was how taxpayers saw how and where their tax dollars go. Even though my parents were the publishers and owners I would always get HYPED to see my name and sometimes even my picture in the sports section (humble brag). You can go to their website to read why they came to this point but I wanted to focus on what can only be described as one of the hardest and most essential jobs, owning and operating a newspaper, no matter how small its circulation. Ektachrome and the Great American Southwest: made for each other! First up is the former Whiting Brothers Motel in Tucumcari, NM. Then we have a gratuitous shot of one of the film fridges at Cathouse East, showing more Ektachrome 120 raring to go🤠! The next shots show just how big a part of our “living color” history Ektachrome was. Arizona Highways. Every time I stumble across back issues of this in places like antique malls I can’t help myself, they’re coming home with me. Just check out the photographers notes section they used to run back in the day. How many times do you spot the word Ektachrome? It was never the legend Kodachrome was but because it was faster and easier to process and available in more formats it was the film stock which did the heavy lifting in color publications right up to the 1990s when Fuji Velvia began to edge it out. Kodak killed off Ektachrome in 2012, but the resurgence of film photography and popular demand led to the return of Ektachrome six years later. It was announced in Las Vegas at the 2017 CES, finally arriving in 2018 as 35mm, branching out to medium and large format in late 2019. I have shot a bunch of it, developed a bunch of it, and the thrill is still there every time I pull a reel of it from the Paterson tank!
