For sh*ts n giggles but not really. 👧🏽 Thats me, 8 years old in 1989. Next is a still I snapped from my netflix nostalgia moviefest - Clueless in 1995. 6 years & a different decade. But similar outfit? 👧🏽 What Im trying to show is how little & how subtle styling and especially staple clothes we wear regularly, change over time. Sure we went through the high waisted to hig hugger to boot cut to skinny jeans, and Ill be the first to admit I hardly made my jeans last and owned several pairs, & went through several more. I now stick to a pair of skinny, boyfriend 501s & black jeans for work. I have probably owned a total of 20-25 pairs in 25 years. NOT good! 👧🏽 Trends come n go, and then come back. So making informed purchases & not following hot takes is vital. We like to live in the now but we should ask ourselves how will this look on me when my body changes (cuz hell yes it will!), will this fit me when my body changes, can I wear this for work & play & chilling, will this age well enough as I age, can I keep this in good condition so its ready for use when I let it go? 👧🏽 Clothes made 20-30 years ago before fast fashion became the norm were built to last longer with better quality. Given the trend cycle what is vintage from the past could be in now or never really went out, your next new outfit could be the one you already own hidden in the back of your wardrobe, in a friends cupboard waiting for a new owner (like the One Ring), in a thrift or vintage shop or online platform, or upcycled from something we already have. Did you all watch Pretty in Pink when she upcycled the 2 dresses into her prom dress? Think along those lines to get creative. Think about engaging tailors & seamstresses to help bring your vision to life. 👧🏽 We dont need to buy new clothes to keep our style or feel good about ourselves or for fashion. Fast fashion is a global pollution & exploitation issue that also exploits the consumer through duping us on trends n such. Lets step out of it. - @iquitwaste on Instagram

This is me on April 6, 2020, two days after my 25th birthday. I had just given myself a haircut I hated while sheltering in place. I wore a beanie to cover it up even though it was starting to get hot. At this time, I privately thought the stay at home orders would last until the end of the year. But I also privately hoped that the optimists were right - it would only be a few more weeks of self-containment - and I was just being paranoid. It was a Monday, so I was most likely sitting on my bed and doing remote work for my very cushy job where I try to make other people happy to work at the same company as me. And this is my mother in April 1996, just a few months shy of her 25th birthday. Her eldest daughter has just turned one (or is about to turn one). She is pregnant with her second child, my younger sister and only sibling. I don’t know if my mom knew that yet. She has been married for 4 years and hasn’t been able to go back to the Philippines to see her family in the same amount of time. I believe she was working (or was about to start working) at a pizza place in the food court of the Edwards Air Force Base BX. I know she hated standing for 8 hours a day while she was pregnant. When I was going to school, she would always tell me to never work in food service. It’s too hard and I’ll get veins in my legs from standing all day and my soft hands will get rough and crack from the hot water when I wash dishes. I’m supposed to go to college, get a degree, and work a nice job where I don’t have to stand for 8 hours a day. Let me start my day by telling you how amazing God is. Today marks the 7th year to the day, of this picture on the left. I spent all of last night remembering what it felt like to be in this moment. In this picture, I was just coming out of my second major surgery in a year. I had stage 3 Endometrial Cancer and I’d just found out, that I had stage 1 Colon Cancer. This particular surgery was to remove 30% of my colon. Even during that, I wasn’t afraid. I always felt God with me, and I heard him tell me not to worry, bc I would be fine and to trust him. So that, my family, and some close friends, are what got me through. I wouldn’t be this person on the right without acknowledging that today. So, no matter what your day looks like, just know that you WILL get through it. September is #NICUAwarenessMonth. When I found out I was pregnant I never imagined I would spend the first few months watching my sweet innocent baby grow in a plastic box. I never imagined having to wait for days to meet my baby boy because I was too sick to stand. Words can’t describe the first time you see your little boy covered in tubes and wires. TPN, ventilator, surfactant, CPAP, jaundice, needle sticks, desats, apnea, ng tube, intubate, extubate, blood gas, caffeine, central line, etc. The words you never want to learn yet become part of your daily vocabulary. We spent hours in the NICU watching Dylan grow but also interacting with his amazing doctors and nurses. They checked in on us and eased our worries while they cared for little Dylan every second of every day. They would play music for Dylan in his incubator and rub his head when he was cranky. The NICU is somewhere you never want to go, yet a place you’re forever grateful for.
