French poster for Les Mepris by George Allard: Godard’s biggest box office success and the most accessible of his films, Le Mépris was a tale of filmmaking and marital breakdown set in the glorious surroundings of Capri in Italy. George Allard’s rich use of colour for the French poster reflects the lavish, sun-soaked Technicolor of the film. Taking a more traditional, painterly approach to film poster design than many of the artists associated with the New Wave, he also foregrounds the obvious sensuality of its star, Brigitte Bardot.
