Héctor Jaramillo C. Los Molles, V Región, 2005. Las actinias, aun cuando parezcan flores, son animales que pertenecen al género de las anémonas y se alimentan filtrando el plancton del agua con sus tentáculos, o atrapando con ellos pequeños animales. Esta especie de actinia no es tan común en Los Molles, lugar en donde tomé esta foto, a más de 35 metros de profundidad. Un amigo nos había dicho de su existencia y, tras dos inmersiones fallidas, logramos dar con una pared llena de estos hermosos individuos. Fue increíble, porque estaba bastante oscuro, y al pasar las luces de las linternas, descubrimos lo que parecía un gran campo de flores color naranja. My generation was taught that the sea was an inexhaustible resource and we took and took and took before we learned that we were decimating the planet! 📷 & words by @jim_abernethy Growing up swimming in the ocean daily, enabled me to fall in love with our aquatic world very early! The diversity and abundance of wildlife was incomprehensible in those days! Although I have absolutely no regrets about my childhood in the sea, these days, it seems as though I reflect back to the much better days, when life flourished everywhere you looked! Sadly my baseline is so early that its very difficult sometimes for me to focus on the now because Im missing the then, the past so much! As a society, its so important to take our experiences from the past and bring it to the present. Fall feels from the deep sea. 🍁⁠ ⁠ Brisingids are unusual sea stars found in the deep sea. They are different from typical sea stars because they use the spines on their arms as velcro to capture tiny prey as food. This group of brisingids was caught on camera in Rodriguez Seamount, off the coast of Southern California. ⁠ ⁠ The summit of Rodriguez Seamount is a smooth, gently domed platform. Rough hills stand above the platform and consist of dense, degassed ‘a‘a flows that erupted on the surface. This little parasite might not seem like a big deal. Its kind of cute at first. But it surprised scientists when they found it where it wasnt supposed to be. Orthione griffenis, a cough drop-sized crustacean native to Asia and Russia, has decimated mud shrimp populations in California and Washington over the past 30 years, causing the collapse of delicate mudflat ecosystems anchored by the shrimp. Researchers identified the intruder during a 2017 marine bioblitz organized by @hakaiinstitute and Smithsonian MarineGEO. These surveys can act as early warning systems for invasive species, said Gustav Paulay. “If you catch them early enough, you have a chance to do something about it.” Most scientists believed the parasites’ expansion was exclusively mediated by human transport – O. griffenis is thought to have first arrived in North America by traveling in ships’ ballast water. Adding some finishing touches to one of the cursed hats that we made at Paul Jones Effects Studio for season 1 of What we do in the Shadows on FX. Hairpunching into thick mask latex that is barge’d onto a leather hat is super fun 🙃 did the best I could! Hahah The script called for hair on it! Sculpt/paint by @pauljonesfx Molded/cast by Matt dewilde Latex was glued onto the hats by the wardrobe department and they did the stitching on 1/3 hats we made. Microcosm - shown for a month at the National Art School in Sydney Australia. (Part of a photo grid) Have you ever stood at the water’s edge and seen the patterns the waves have made in the sand, then looked up into the sky and seen the same patterns made by the wind in the clouds, only thousands of times bigger? Microcosm is about the building blocks of the universe, and how there is an aesthetic consistency throughout the natural world, even though the scale may change enormously. We love that people interpret this work as perhaps an exploding petrie dish of bacteria, or a coral reef, or the synapses of a brain, or the Big Bang in action. In fact, we guess that it’s all of these things, clusters of communities working together to make its ‘whole’ much stronger and better than the sum of its parts. SCTLD has made its way to the Cayman Islands 😢 . ➡️@doecayman Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) was observed in Grand Cayman for the first time at the North Coast of Grand Cayman on June 21st 2020. A site visit was made on June 26th by DoEs Marine Resource Unit (MRU) in response to a disease report from Tom Byrnes, Cayman Marine Lab. Unfortunately, without a known pathogen, it is impossible to confirm any diagnosis. However, the species, symptoms and rapid mortality rates resemble those seen in Florida and other Caribbean countries (Precht et al., 2016). SCTLD first appeared on Florida’s Reefs in 2014 and has spread to several countries in the Caribbean. It is known to affect more than 20 species of stony corals including primary reef building species: pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus), elliptical star coral (Dichocoenia stokesii) and maze coral (Meandrina meandrites), brain corals and the smooth flower coral (Eusmilia fastigiata). Once a coral is infected it begins to lose live tissue and it is likely that the colony will die within weeks to months. SCTLD resembles other “white diseases” such as White Plague Disease but can be distinguished by white patches occurring in different areas of the same colony, rapid death of live tissue and the amount of individual colonies infected on a dive site. Divers & snorkelers can do the following to reduce their likelihood of transferring SCTLD and help to slow its spread which gives our reefs more time to adapt: ✅ practice proper buoyancy when diving ✅ avoid touching marine organisms ✅ sanitize equipment between dives and after each dive excursion (especially between infected & uninfected locations) International scientists are monitoring the disease outbreak, identifying the pathogen(s) and developing treatments. The DoE are currently monitoring the spread of SCTLD in the Cayman Islands and are developing a rapid response strategy. A juveline Pinnate Batfish hangs in the shallows and safety of the reef in Lembeh Straight. The striking outline on their body fades as they mature. As they grow, the feed off of algae on the reef, keeping the coral healthy. The winged pearl oyster (Pteria penguin) is cultured to produce mabé pearls (half pearls) throughout Asia and the South Pacific. The process has two distinct culture phases: 1) a nonproductive period of growth in which spat are cultured to a size appropriate for pearl production, and 2) a mabé pearl production phase that follows pearl nucleus implantation. The first phase can take up to 3.5 years depending on location and culture protocol, and maximizing oyster survival and growth during this phase can significantly reduce farm labor costs and the time required to achieve profitability. A recent study published in the April 2020 issue of the Journal of Shellfish Research assesses the effectiveness a novel culture unit, consisting of chaplets housed within protective wire mesh cylinders, at increasing the survivorship and growth of winged pearl oysters while reducing maintenance requirements and overall costs. The first photo in this post shows juvenile winged pearl oysters being “ear-hung” and cultured within these protective mesh cylinders. Once the oysters are large enough, the protective cylinders can be removed as the risk of predation is reduced (second picture). These full-grown corals may be easy to spot with the naked eye, but young corals are a different story. Baby corals that have recently settled onto a reef surface are approximately 1 millimeter in diameter, making them really, really hard to see.⁣ ⁣ Thats a challenge for coral scientists, because In the 6 – 12 months it takes juvenile corals to grow large enough to be found by divers, researchers have already missed a key early part in the corals life. ⁣ ⁣ A new NOAA-funded tool uses fluorescence to help scientists detect these tiny corals, whether theyre on natural reef surfaces or on artificial substrates brought back to the laboratory. The tool will help scientists answer key questions about coral health and how coral larvae attach themselves and become part of the reef. Geister-Fetzenfisch Pärchen (Solenostomus paradoxus) Meist sind Männchen und Weibchen des Geister-Fetzenfisch (Solenostomus paradoxus) ihr Leben lang zusammen und bleiben auch länger an ein und demselben Platz. Das Weibchen ist dabei gut an der Brut-Tasche zu erkennen. Diese wird von den Brustflossen gebildet. Meist ist das Männchen auch um einiges kleiner und schmaler. Selten sind sie so frei stehend, meist direkt im Astgewirr von Gorgonien oder Federsternen. Mostly males and females of the Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) live together and stay longer on a specific spot. The female is easy to recognize by the brood bag. This is formed by the pectoral fins. Mostly the male is a lot smaller and narrower. Auch der Korallensand ist voll mit Leben, man muss nur genauer hinsehen. 🤓 Die Seezunge gehört zur Ordnung der Plattfische und ist mit ihrer flachen Körperform perfekt an das Leben am Boden angepasst. Als Jungfische schwimmen sie allerdings noch normal aufrecht. Erst später wandert dann ein Auge zu dem anderen auf die eine Körperseite, die dann zur Oberseite wird. 😯 Bewundern könnt ihr sie im 3.Stock.
