Ep 1 of PINDROP, the podcast Im hosting for @TED , is up! And Apple put it on the top row of the front page of Apple Podcasts! Super grateful! Some behind the scenes: I couldnt go to Bangkok for this episode, but we worked with Pailin Wedel, a really dope Thai-American filmmaker/journalist who was on the ground, recording, riding through traffic with motorcyle police midwives (!) all kinds of stuff. When it came time to record narration, some of it came from me interviewing Pailin about the stories, but some had to be just me narrating. I was nervous. The @magnificentnoise and TED production team had done a bunch of great recording in Bangkok and groundwork for the episode, but it was my first time hosting a podcast. I wanted to sound natural, and I wanted to make sure I didnt, um, say anything dumb about Bangkok. So, I called up my friend Raj Bunnag ( Thai-American artist, has lived out in Bangkok, IG @jungle_asian_redneck , pictured above and a shot of his art in the last slide), and asked him to just sit socially distanced away and listen to me work through narration and riffing new bits. He came through with @thereallaww , and while at first I thought theyd just check me when I sounded stiff or said something that felt off, Raj kept riffing himself and saying fascinating, funny things. So we micd him up, interviewed him, and sent that tape off to the producers as well, not sure what to expect. Producer @betweenthebranches was into the new tape, and that is the story of how Bojangles lovin Durhamite Raj Bunnag ended up in the episode. It’s been emotional... but maybe we are getting somewhere ❤️ . I like many have taken a few days to pause, and reflect what’s been happening around the world in the wake of the horrific scenes of the death of George Floyd. . While it has been fantastic to see so many people speak up, to march, to display unity to stand up for a cause, it is sad that it took another mans death to spearhead this latest part of a movement ✊ . I don’t usually use this space to talk about issues that affect me, instead I like to talk about the positive aspects of yoga and the joy I get from my surroundings. But like many other people of colour it is upsetting to know that we still live in a world where this can happen, and I feel I would be lying to myself if I carried on with my usual posts when this has been bubbling inside of me. If I’d have spoken sooner, this could have been a much angrier post. . I’ve found it upsetting that this is not the first time, there have been countless incidents of brutality caught on camera, dating back to Rodney King, and hashtag movements crying out for a change. But momentum was lost, or forgotten about, and it wasn’t long before the world moved on, and atrocities like this continued. No doubt you have seen the statistics that show coloured people are not treated the same by the police and the judicial system that surrounds it 🤬 . I have been buoyed that once again people have spoken up and this time I have seen change is happening. The neck restraint is being outlawed in some states, the NFL has admitted fault and will allow its players to take a knee. It won’t get rid of the wider issue, but they are a step in the right direction . I’ve been speaking up against racism my whole life, I had to, often no one else was there to stick up for me. I’m fortunate that I have been strong enough to speak up for myself, and if I see it happen, for others too. . Before I go on I want to pause on the word racism.... it implies that anyone of colour is a different race... so the word itself is part of the problem to me. ”Healing does not mean going back to the way things were before, but rather allowing what is now to move us closer to God.” – Ram Dass 💜 Its day 5 post surgery and Im in a weird space. Weird does not mean bad to me. It means strange, new, unexplored. I feel almost well enough to do some things. And Im still getting exhausted pretty fast. My neck, from where they cut the muscles up to my chin, is completely numb. But even in the numbness, there is an odd pressure and a sense of missing something. Swallowing, sneezing, coughing are all painful but manageable. 💜 The most challenging thing to deal with right now is still not knowing; not knowing if I still have cancer in my lymph nodes or elsewhere in my body, not knowing if Ill need radiated iodine therapy or not, not knowing how to feel about having cancer, not knowing if I should feel guilty because I have the good cancer because it is treatable when so many others have it worse. 💜 I am trying to take it on as I would ask my students to do so, with an open heart, an open mind, and an appreciation for not knowing with a foot firmly planted in the power of positivity. I WILL heal. And then I will use my experience to help others heal. 💜 Thank you to everyone who has reached out, sent a prayer, bought a tshirt, shared a post, and stood by #teambyford as we take on this new challenge. One of the first tv shows I had the opportunity to do was @abccastle. For as big a star as @nathanfillion is I was humbled and inspired by how generous an actor and gracious a person he truly was with ME, a teeny, tiny co-star on one episode of a long-running hit tv show. Living proof that you can be both successful and a good person in this business. I never forgot that, or the fact that he seemed chuffed to take this ‘selfie’ with me (the first I’d ever done), as opposed to letting anyone else take it. I’d like to intuit that his moral compass is pretty well guided by what’s important in life. “Mi sono trasferito a Londra nel 2011, inizialmente per imparare l’inglese e tornare. Poi la città e la cultura inglese fatta di molta meritocrazia ha fatto si che la mia carriera lavorativa, che svolgo parallelamente all’attività di cantautore, prendesse strade positive che mi hanno portato a rimanere. Sono sempre stato felice della mia scelta, qui ho imparato a crescere ad affrontare tutte le situazioni belle e brutte da solo, a diventare più maturo. Ovviamente mi manca l’Italia e la Sicilia - racconta Danilo Sapienza che é un cantautore catanese di 35 anni. Cresce ascoltando la musica di Lucio Battisti e Baglioni ma anche dei Queen che lo portano a scrivere brani inediti sia in italiano sia in inglese. Così negli anni della sua gioventù inizia a esibirsi nei vari locali della sua città insieme a musicisti come Luca Galeano (chitarrista Mario Venuti), Edoardo Musumeci (Sugarfree, Red Canzian, Tinturia) proponendo quasi sempre i suoi inediti. Partecipa a numerosi contests in giro per l’Italia. Nel 2011 decide di partire e andare a Londra, per lavoro ma anche per riscoprire la voglia di scrivere ancora nuovi pezzi. Prima della fine del 2019 Danilo sente il bisogno di scrivere di nuovo in italiano ed inizia a lavorare su nuovi brani cercando di far trapelare la sua maturità artistica, la sua immagine e quello stile tra il cantautore italiano classico e l’indiepop britannico. Aiutato dal suo amico Elia Lo Tauro (James Bond:Skyfall, Lion King, Royal Opera House) si dedica alla realizzazione di alcuni provini, facendo uscire il singolo “Di te” a giugno 2020, brano interamente arrangiato da Danilo nella sua abitazione londinese durante il lockdown. So I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time now.. the whole lock down experience has been absolutely unique for all of us. We have all felt together in this and yet had our own revealations… Personally for me I have had a rendezvous with my own existential crisis,My fears. Have questioned everything including Life as it is.. Over these past months i tried to actually observe my thoughts and decided to keep them as reminders in form of quotes…it may or may not resonate with you…These thoughts are not necessarily a comment on various happenings,events, ideologies that have come forward but more like an instruction or message to self. I shall be sharing those few thoughts through the T-shirts that I got designed with the help of my Super Talented Sister @swatitiwary and @titiksha_rout We all are aware especially with the recent events that there is a lot going on in human decision making (not only as an individual but more so in a group) than the basic idea that INFORMATION DRIVES BEHAVIOUR We make decisions not only out of the information but coz of the Rational/Irrational subconscious perceptions created on us by the society or influencers We all are smart enough to see Propaganda around us…Propaganda post the Second World War wore the Façade of PR and Counseling to influence the consumers. It has been the biggest flagbearer of Consumerism which has driven our Capitalistic society… Celebrities and Influencers have been the tool used by Propagandist since the invention of the word…We all are aware of various recent events which are clear examples of the aforementioned. The idea is to basically Reject the outer influence…find willingness to let go of all the conditioning and find a way to look at things the way it is nd not through the tinted glasses that are put on us through Propaganda! I may be smiling, but I’m starting 2020 off with major anxiety. There are so many goals And dreams I want to pursue, but the fact is I’m torn between what exactly I want to give my energy to. I only have so much energy to give. I want to give myself to the people and things that I love most, yet I’m afraid I to spread myself too thin. Maybe you’ve felt like this before? - I’m bombarded with social media messages from “gurus” with all this advice, but the only thing I’ve ever known is to listen to my heart. My heart isn’t always right. - I’ve always had a rocky relationship with social media. Deep down I’m an Introvert playing on an extroverted playing field. I feel this extreme pressure to succeed. Like I’m racing against an invisible clock and it makes me want to withdraw and just disappear sometimes. - I’m addicted to the hype like the drugs and alcohol I gave up a while back. When I open Social media it’s sucking the ever loving life out of me yet I keep posting on Tik Tok to get an overdose of Dopamine in my system. People tell me keep it up but most days I wanna throw my phone somewhere where I’ll never see it. I either wanna silence the notifications or increase them to new heights. I’m never satisfied. - I don’t want to be defined by my career. I don’t want the word “dj” in my handle. It’s a skill I learned in necessity because I was too critical of my self to start a rap career. Or too lazy. One of the two. I’m talking this way because it’s apparently trendy this year on Instagram to have lengthy captions. Be trendy at all costs or disappear. Or get yourself enough followers to set your own trends. A rant: The picture above shows one of my favorite moments in Odds & Ends. The show was designed, from beginning to end, to be performed over video chat/Zoom. That is, with the exception of one piece. That piece is one I’ve been experimenting with for over 10 years. I decided to include it in the show to test if it could be translated to this new medium. The main obstacle to overcome was that this particular piece necessitates someone from the audience physically involved—hence the disembodied hand, playing the role of a participant. To my pleasant surprise, it works. I’ve spent the last 2 hours thinking about the most effective way to place those 2 bills in that disembodied hand, and in the words to accompany the action. After 2 hours of experimentation, I think I found a way that is slightly more effective that what I was doing before. The action is more precise, and I was able to cut a few words from the script, which trims about 1 second of performance time. It’s a little detail, but I think it makes a difference. Leonardo da Vinci is attributed as the first person to have said “Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail.” Not many people might notice, but I do. And it makes me immensely happy. I feel lucky to have something in my life I’m passionate and excited about. I didn’t find magic, I never aspired to find something that consumes my attention so intensely. Magic found me. I’m lucky. I hope you have something in your life you are passionate about. Something that makes time go faster when you are fully immersed in it. If you haven’t found it, keep searching. It’s out there somewhere, waiting for you. I’m preforming Odds & Ends again today (a few tickets still available for upcoming dates, link in Bio), in collaboration with @magicbarla.
