I think this was the best 4 or 5 days surfing of my life. It was that swell that @koarothman got the huge one. One might argue over what island has the best waves in the world. Australia technically is a island am I right? We landed in Sydney from Honolulu. Myself @dannyfuller along with @happyreef76. A life line of contacts to ping down the south coast. Our objective was based around a couple of large low pressures sitting off the east coast. A few meat pies and black coffees, Mr. Morgan hinted to get on the Hwy and head his way. The 3 am departure was brutal. Half asleep we made the four-hour drive through farm lands of the coastal country side. After the long drive we found our exit into the quiet fishing town. The slab hunter was waiting, at the local cafe we shook hands and had few laughs. Morgan’s mate gave a few words but not many. “You boys ready” is what stuck in my head all day, every session we surfed was bigger and heavier than the previous. We eventually found ourselves huddled on the edge a pyramid shape reef. Waiting for the Jet ski to come scoop us off and taxi us out to line up. No ski showed up, the wave was about 15 minute paddle swim out. Through deep shark infested looking waters. (Found out it was full of sharks after we got back to land) I was swimming as quick as I could to keep up with Danny and Reef. Reef has arms like an orangutan, one paddle for him is like three or four to the average surfer. Passing the deep channel onto reef we found our lineups. The cross current from channel into impact zone was nearly impossible to stay in one spot. Reality was starting to sink in, it was going to be impossible to be three to five away from my subjects. I like a good challenge, this time the 15 mm lens was proving to be the wrong focal length. Two hours later I was about to give up. My legs were starting to cramp, the water was so cold I could not feel my feet or hands. I swam through the first wave of set, Danny was on the next. The first wave had pulled me exactly into position, I had a few bars left of strength as he pulled into the barrel I lifted my arm and camera, I held my arm in the barrel to the point of getting sucked over the falls. @kanoaigarashi during a late afternoon into evening swim at Main Break in Margaret River. These days I’m missing the adventure that comes with surf and travel photography, but not so sure I’m missing the anxiety I felt during this swim. Between unpredictable rogue sets, a dry reef end section to navigate getting out and back in, and the perpetual mirages of what surely lurks beneath, I spent much of the session trying to control my breathing and heart rate. In the end, aside from getting rag dolled on the end section trying to get in, I returned home relatively unscathed and with a card full of some of my favorite images of the year. Theres a fine line in surf photography when determining “Is the juice worth the squeeze” and with this session I’m still unsure if it was worth it. But as I look back at the photos while sitting on my comfy couch and I feel my heart starting to beat a little faster, I’m happy to be able to create images that have that effect any time I look at them. Hoping everyone out there is finding a way to get their heart rate up while sequestered in sweatpants staring at screens. - @tallteef on Instagram

I wanted to take this time to say thank you for 20k! Although I try not get caught up in the numbers I’d still like to acknowledge and give thanks to everyone who has supported me over the years! At the end of the day it’s always been more than just taking photos to me. I never thought I’d grow such a strong connection and passion for the ocean and photography but I’m grateful it all came into place and has given me more than just a photographs. Since the beginning of this journey I have met and grown a relationship with some of the greatest individuals and I am so thankful that I have them apart of my life. The friend I have made over the years I what I hold close and dear to my heart. I’ve been able to express myself freely by using a camera and sharing my vision of how I see the world around me with many people near and far. With people who may never get to experience these moments for themselves. All I ever wish to do is make people feel some type of way when they see my images. It doesn’t have to be the same feelings I have. To me it’s all about perspective and I think it’s interesting to see how people perceive my art. Lastly, there’s a lot that goes unseen when it comes to photography and those unseen moments is what shapes me into the person I am today. Throughout the years I have experienced life changing lessons and skills along the way. Photography has taught me the significance of patience; to slow down when it comes to taking the photo at the right moment and understanding there will always be that chance of missing it. Ive learned that the perfect shot may not happen right away; it may take hours, days, or even years, which continues to teach me the value of persistence and determination. The lessons I learn through taking photos I carry into my everyday life. The ocean has taught me quite quickly to be humble and respect its power, but to never limit myself as I find a new sense of comfortability. I have learned to take risks with the possibility of making mistakes, rather than remaining fearful and stuck within my limited comfort zone. Just a little post to remind everybody that the tiny fraction of my life you see here on socials is just that, a tiny fraction of my life. I’ve been getting a lot of “living the dream” comments lately which is so lovely - and no doubt this year has been incredible for me transitioning to full time surfer - however behind each shot, each YouTube clip, each endorsement deal, free trip or product, and certainly each film, there is generally speaking a whole heap of hard work, anguish, frustration, elation and ego suppression that goes on. I only want to share positive stuff on here, I don’t think it’s a healthy platform to air my dirty laundry or solve personal issues - that’s best kept for in person interactions with people you love.
