RÊVE RÉALISÉ - Après 3000 km de chasse à travers le nord de la France ces 5 derniers jours, cest dans les dernières heures hier soir de ces longues traques que notre rêve se réalise devant nos yeux, un puissant impact de foudre à moins de 150 mètres avec de magnifiques détails sur la recrudescence de limpact de foudre ainsi que les étincelles au moment du contact avec la pâle de léolienne du constructeur Nordex où jai travaillé pendant 1 an en tant que technicien de maintenance à réparer ces grands monstres des campagnes ! Ces traques orageuses pendant les périodes caniculaire sont très difficiles, les modèles de prévisions ont énormément de difficulté à prévoir ces orages dans un air surchauffé et très sec. The beast awoke from its slumber. Sunday afternoons severe storm caught many people off guard as cars were left smashed on the side of the road and houses left with shattered windows. Its easy to become complacent especially after the dry seasons weve had and lack of experiencing severe storms such as the one that rolled through causing devastation throughout the Sunshine Coast. A not so gentle reminder to take all forecasts seriously and to understand that mother nature decides whether or not to follow through with the forecast. Myself and my family decided to get well of head of this machine and head down to Happy Valley watching very carefully as to its movements and the level of threat it imposed. We were very lucky as the storm turns North we were in the perfect spot to witness some of the best lightning Ive seen in many years here. My heart goes out to all those who were impacted by the large hail and severe winds that came with it. Great to hang out with @gl3no @that_purple_hairgirl and @mrs_donovan_ enjoying the show. “Fearless” Last Sunday night was a very special night for me, for a few reasons: First , I witnessed a very unique and amazing lightning storm, this beautiful thunderstorm formed right in front of my eyes; I didn’t have to go far to capture some photos, just had to walk to the park next to my house and set the tripod and camera and capture some of that amazing beauty. This is one of the photos I captured that night, the lightning is impressive but what I love the most about this photo is the clouds, beautiful stormy clouds passing through Sacramento skies; it was gorgeous. Sheets of hail blanketed the Sunshine Coast on the 17-11-2019. A storm that took advantage of the terrain and incoming sea breeze. Ive read a couple of great write ups about this particular cell, one by Anthony Cornelius which you can find on his FB page for those weather nerds after a good read. For myself and my family this was always forecast as a shoot and run day, one chance to position ourselves then hide. We knew the speed of the storms on this particular day were going to be quite fast but we never expected a supercell to develop right on our laps. Joined by @gl3no and @that_purple_hairgirl at Happy Valley @mrs_donovan_ and myself watched in awe as this breathtaking cell approached and shifted slightly north of our location. We ended up leaving the beach shortly after this photo and hid out in a toilet block as hailstones up to 3 cm covered the ground. My target yesterday was western AZ, near Quartzsite...and I got side-tracked to Gila Bend for a bit, but then blasted west and enjoyed some awesome storms. They finally went outflow crazy and it was fairly awesome to see a nice shelf cloud and such a blue whale’s mouth approaching near Tonopah. A rare-ish sight in these parts. Also met a sweet couple having a bit of a rough day with their car, ended up taking them chasing along with their two sweet pups. Just when you think the season is over an unexpected little cell pops up and delivers the lightning shot of the year! I caught this monster bolt as I was coming home from Canmore and this system was building south of Calgary. I pulled over around 11pm just off Hwy 1 and the Cochrane overpass and set up a lapse capturing this early on as the system kept moving to the east. And the story continues .. . . After I’ve taken the last shot I posted, we head home. It’s close to 4am. And I realise that the lightning is way more intense near my house. There is no way I can sleep. I drive back to a nearby hill. Alone! . . It’s dark, it’s storm, it’s thunder, it’s lightning, it’s lonely. If I want this shot I have to be brave. I am scared. But that’s not bad. Because no matter what the result is, the sense of relief after pushing yourself is unmatchable. Every other minute I spend on this hill is less scary though. In the end it is as if I belong here. . . It’s a test of patience too. I stay here for 90 mins. Take close to a 100 shots because you have no idea where will the lightning strike next. I finally get lucky with this big strike. And to set the perspective right, a transmission tower (seen in bottom right) is 100ft tall on an average. And it looks like a miniature in front of the lighting branches. That’s how big this strike is. . . I would have loved a better composition like prettier hills or a tree being hit by lightning etc. But then, lightning itself is so pretty. So I present this shot to you. Hope you like it. PS: this is not photoshopped. What a crazy Friday night this past weekend! Me and Matt ended up going into southeastern Minnesota hoping to get some midnight supercells. After getting on some earlier storms that were heading into Iowa, we decide to try our luck on a new cluster forming near the South Dakota border. While getting into position we ended up getting stopped by the police, but that proved to be the pivotal moment in catching this bolt, as we decided to reverse course and setup in this wind turbine farm on a more southerly cluster. Sure enough, it took off and dropped quite a few CG’s within a couple of miles of us. Was definitely worth pulling an all nighter! Best part of all? “Electrifying” This beautiful thunderstorm formed over Sacramento last Sunday and it was absolutely gorgeous, even though it didn’t last much it sure gave us a show of lightning and thunder; I was born in Colombia and then lived in Florida so thunderstorm is something I’m very familiar with, so that day I knew something was about to happen since the the clouds were moving fast and it was very humid and hot. I’m thankful I was up and awake because this definitely doesn’t happen often here in California. We were planning on shooting the Perseids meteor shower that night, but seeing this storm was jaw dropping and we quickly pulled out our zoom lenses before packing up to dodge the rain Turns out its hard to zoom in on a storm thats a few miles away when its pitch black, getting this in frame involved tons of trial and error while slowly zooming in. The shot is a composite of two 2 minute exposures capturing multiple lightning strikes in each. I hadnt shot lightning before this night, and now Im hooked What made the moment truly spectacular though was how the Milky Way was directly above the storm clouds. Je cadre seulement les éoliennes en face de moi, sur ma droite, Yannick cadre des éoliennes à 2-3 kilomètres de notre position. Sur cet impulsion dimpact il en tombera 13 canals, la plupart sont des ascendants dont celui qui est à 75 mètres de nous sur larroseur entre nous et léolienne, il passe ensuite entre les deux pales de la première éoliennes. 8 éoliennes se feront foudroyés en même temps, dont 6 sur celle que @chasseur_dorages_lyonnais cadré avec son appareil photo sur notre droite. Je vous invite à aller voir sa photo. 13 canals en même temps, cest totalement dingue, sans compter ceux qui sont tombés où nos appareils nétait pas orientés... 2 décroissance en chapelet sur les deux éoliennes avec moins de précision. Cette photo à été prise seulement 5 minutes et 12 secondes après la première éolienne foudroyé juste devant nous...
