Happy Shark Awareness Day! Today we want to celebrate some of the lesser known species of shark native to the coastal waters of California. Like brown smoothound, soupfin, spiny dogfish, leopard, and swell sharks, all abundant in California waters. Most shark species are not dangerous to humans and the beautiful angel shark is one of them. If you were a small fish cruising near the sandy bottom you COULD be in danger though. The angel shark is an ambush predator with a lightening quick gulping reflex. It lays on the bottom motionless and covered in sand all day waiting for an opportunity to surprise and snap up any unsuspecting fish swimming by. The prey preferences of these smaller species of sharks typically include small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and some mollusks. It is with great regret that the staff and board of the Nantucket Comedy Festival has decided to cancel our 13th Annual Nantucket Comedy Festival, originally scheduled for July 16–18, 2020. Due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, we feel that the holding the Festival in our traditional format will not be possible this summer. Even though we have not been able to meet in person, the mission of Nantucket Comedy Festival continues, and is more important now than ever! Over the past three months, we have switched our kids’ Stand Up & Learn workshops to one-on-one classes over Zoom. We also created a weekly virtual comedy roundtable, the Best Medicine, hosted by Bob Ley, in which Festival favorite comedians from around the U.S. got together to make us laugh and forget our worries for 30 minutes a week (past episodes can be seen here on our Vimeo Channel: https://vimeo.com/423243189 (live link in bio). We continue to search for other non-traditional formats in which to hold our comedy shows to benefit Stand Up & Learn, some in conjunction with other island non-profits, including a possible drive-in comedy show. ¡COLUMNA GATUNA! “Rabia: Un Problema de Salud Pública aún Presente” por el Dr. Nicolás Galarce, Director Comisión ‘Una Salud’ del Colegio Médico Veterinario. . Hoy 28 de septiembre se conmemora el Día Mundial contra la Rabia, y como Comisión Una Salud del @colmevet, no podemos estar ajenos ante una enfermedad que constituye un importante problema de salud pública, considerando que su letalidad, en la práctica, alcanza un 100%. . La rabia es causada por un virus (virus de la rabia) que afecta a todos los mamíferos, siendo los principales reservorios los cánidos, mustélidos, y quirópteros. Sin embargo, los perros son los principales responsables de la rabia humana a nivel mundial, presentándose entre 50 mil a 70 mil casos anuales. Debido a esto, en los últimos años han aumentado los esfuerzos de coordinación a nivel internacional con el objetivo de eliminar la rabia transmitida por perros de aquí al 2030. . En Chile, la ejecución sistemática de las medidas de control, iniciadas en 1960 a través del Programa Nacional de Control de Rabia, logró eliminar la circulación de la variante canina de este virus, con la consiguiente eliminación de casos humanos de rabia transmitidos por perro en el país. En este escenario, Chile se declara “libre de rabia canina” en el año 2010, donde es necesario reconocer el gran aporte y esfuerzo realizado por médicos veterinarios que trabajan directamente en el control de la enfermedad, tanto a nivel de Seremis de Salud, Instituto de Salud Pública, Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero y Municipios. The critically endangered White-bellied Heron, also known as the Imperial Heron, is an extremely rare and large stone-gray heron with a distinctive white belly and long neck. The species’ range extends from the eastern Himalayan foothills in Bhutan and north-eastern parts of India, to Bangladesh and north Myanmar. In India, recorded populations can be found in the north-eastern state of Assam, and in Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh. With a rapidly declining and limited population, the White-bellied Heron is threatened by the widespread loss of its habitat. The species, which is primarily observed in terrestrial and wetland habitats, favours mountain rivers and streams often located close to broadleaved forests and wet grasslands. YACARÉ EN RAMALLO. Recientemente, Manuel Antunes coordinador de nuestro COA registró un hermoso ejemplar de yacaré (aún desconocemos si se trata del overo o el negro) en nuestra ciudad. Pese a la gran sorpresa de la mayoría de los vecinos, es necesario aclarar que el yacaré es una especie nativa de Ramallo. La caza y el deterioro de su hábitat por nuestra parte han hecho que desaparezca de la zona, desplazándose aguas al norte. La demonización de dicha especie durante tanto años, nos convenció que estos animales son agresivos y sumamente peligrosos, nada más alejado de la realidad. Es una especie tranquila, cuyos registros de ataques a humanos son sumamente raros, siendo la mayoría realizado como método defensivo ante las agresiones. En muchos lugares del país, los yacarés son un valioso recurso turístico, con el sólo hecho de querer apreciar a tan majestuosas criaturas. Por razones de cuidar al ejemplar, no daremos la ubicación del mismo, pero si nos parece adecuado compartir el registro para concientizar sobre su protección. Y le recordamos a la población que la caza y/o captura de estos animales es un delito penado por ley N° 22421 de Consevación de Fauna Silvestre. Hello there! This is the Black #Stork, although many of you may also know me as Ciconia nigra. Together with the White Stork, we are the 2 only stork species to be found in the #Mediterranean (#Spain #Portugal, #Albania and #Greece). You will easily recognise me by my black and white (underside) plumage, together with a red bill and legs. True fact: my wingspan can measure up to 1.90 m. My preferred habitat types are undisturbed riversides, wetlands and woodlands. As a migratory species, I travel throughout the Mediterranean and to Sub-Saharan Africa searching for the most suitable climate conditions. My biggest fear when migrating is to encounter #powerlines or wind farms, where I can be in danger of electrocution or collision. To prevent these interactions, IUCN-Med has recently published a set of practical guidelines. Also within IUCN, The Stork, Ibis and Spoonbill Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission is committed to the scientific understanding and conservation of our bird families and habitats. Thanks to successful conservation programmes, in countries like Spain, populations of my species have slowly increased until almost 400 breeding pairs (49% in Extremadura and 26,55% in Andalusia) according to @seo_birdlife s 2018 census. The magnificent frigatebird has several nicknames. Charles Darwin called them ‘the condor of the oceans’ because they can spend days and nights at a time on the wing and have an exceptionally large wingspan; in fact the largest wingspan to body weight ratio of any bird in the world. This body shape gives them exceptional aerial manoeuvrability. The Spanish would call them ‘pirate birds’ due to their habit of stealing food from other birds. The male is all black with a purplish sheen on upper body feathers and a large red gular (throat pouch) which is inflated during the breeding season. The female is slightly larger and has a white breast and shoulder, as well as a blue eye-ring. In 2016, Goa’s State Directorate of Fisheries decided to host a competition to choose a State Fish — a fish which was relevant, and would bring pride in some way to the people of Goa. The grey/flathead mullet (Mugil cepahlus) locally known (in Konkani) as Shevtto was voted the State fish of Goa from a long list of contenders. This came as a pleasant surprise. In India, species declared as state or national animals tend to have something iconic about them. They are either extravagant, like the country’s national bird, the Indian Peafowl or exude power, like the Royal Bengal Tiger. The mullet is none of these. The mullet primarily feeds on plankton, small aquatic invertebrates and insects that accidentally drop into the water, which suggests that this species is lower down the marine food web. Mullet are also known to sexually mature relatively early on, and lay millions of eggs, which allow the fish to withstand fishing pressure, and their population bounces back faster than their predatory counterparts. As a rule of thumb, for those concerned about eating sustainably, species that are lower down the food web such as the grey mullet are more sustainable to consume than species that are higher up. Here is a picture of 9 year old Luca with his first Bow River rainbow. While he was wrestling with this fish to get it to the boat, I noticed that he was quite calm and seemed relaxed. But as soon as I netted his fish he couldnt control his excitment any longer and started jumping up and down and yelling Grandpa, I caught my very first fish, my very first fish! When I looked at his grandpa he had the biggest smile on his face. Later he thanked me for a fantastic day and said that it was everything he had hoped for. Its moments like these that make it all worth it. (infographic from NOAA) Beginning in September 2014, researchers noticed that some stony corals had exposed skeletons without tissue. Corals, akin to any other animal, become susceptible to disease, but this stony coral tissue loss disease has become very unique in terms of range, duration, and deadliness. The disease is most likely caused by bacteria and can be transmitted to other corals through direct contact and water circulation. Nearly half of the stony coral species from the Florida Reef have been affected and the mortality rate of the disease is 66 to 100%. Did you know that the Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve has over 150 adult gopher tortoises that live on the property? In the mid-2000s, SCDNR acquired the land that comprises the preserve, which included less than 10 gopher tortoises. The increase in population over the years can be attributed to the restoration and management efforts on the property itself, as well as the numerous partnerships SCDNR has with organizations in the region. We have sat back and waited a bit before coming out with a post about what we are doing this year for events. We are a bit late with this post but that is because things in our lives (both personal and professional) have taken a priority. We were hoping to see a bit better outcome than at the moment and we want to adhere to all regulations, laws and suggestions of Health Canada/Ontario/Niagara. Until further notice all of our events including our annual GetEmHooked will be cancelled as we want everyone to remain safe in these trying times. Once this “stay at home” order is lifted and government/health officials have ok’d people to resume outdoor activities, we hope you get your kids out fishing. Fishing is one of the best activities for families to enjoy nature and enrich kids mental health. We will be here for any kids and family fishing related questions.
