Day 31. Success. “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” - Socrates Over the past 31 days, from August 1st to August 31st, for 62 total miles and on steep and rocky terrain, I carried 125lbs 1 mile up and 1 mile down the mountain. Every day. For today, the final push, I decided to add an additional 25lbs to my kit, for a final weight of 150lbs. On a personal note, I always push for that additional 1%. Run a little faster, do one more rep, or up the weight. Today was about remaining outside of what’s comfortable and doing better than I did the day before. I came out this month with the intent of putting my body through a brutal test. I wanted to put my mind back in the arena and maintain the edge. I wanted to show that while the weight is heavy, either physical or mental, you can keep climbing, take that next step and succeed. Here’s to #alloutaugust and the badass guys @tenthousand.cc! 30 September 1940 Oberleutnant Karl Fischer’s Bf109E-1 (Wn.4851 9+) of 7./Jagdgeschwader 27, after a forced landing near Queen Anne’s Gate, Windsor Great Park, Berkshire. The plane is subject to eager attention from the RAF salvage gang. The mission was a bomber escort. When the formation was on its way to the objective it was attacked by fighters (possibly Hurricanes from 303 Squadron), this aircraft getting into a dog fight. The combat was broken off and the pilot thought that he had not been hit. However an R/T message from his wingman told the pilot that he had a white petrol plume streaming behind and looking at his petrol gauge he noticed that the tanks were almost empty, so he made a forced landing. There were a number of bullet strikes from astern. (The pilot was captured and survived unhurt) Markings: 9 painted on yellow engine cowling. Spinner white, with black circle on tip. Day to day, heart weeping in silence as I put on a brave front in front of people. Been 6 months since my last flight, & the agony is ineffable. To be those men, with their aviator sunglasses & roaring into the skies. That’s all I dreamt of since a tender age without even thinking or consideration for any remunerations or so-called glamour/status as I crafted my life towards this goal with “blood, sweat & tears”. The only moment which got me thinking of doing anything else was during NS when my CO & RSM coerced & recommended me to sign on the Army after an excellent record in NS with the thought of becoming a Pilot was nearing impossible. But perseverance & risks prevailed. We are Professionals.. It’s not just a job/work or even something that most of us decided to try or decide on doing when we are in our late teens or branching into adulthood, but our very own embodiment. The one consistent dream in our lives since we were kids.. When we embark and pledge ourselves to this path, the horizon for us is only retirement.. It’s not just a career journey where you think of mid-career change options.. It’s our life... my life.. Our very dreams and blood... rich in our veins. Well, for most of us anyway... To anyone who knows an Aviator, be patient & informed that with the dark days now & ahead , their mental, emotional & psychological state aren’t what they portray it to be as they are crumbling inside whilst putting a brave front for their loved ones & children. Meet scientist, engineer, and astronaut Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Hispanic woman in space on STS-56 Discovery. Ochoas groundbreaking career sent her on four separate space missions and eventually to the helm of NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) as its first Hispanic director. But her road to becoming an astronaut wasnt a simple one. After applying, she got an interview at Johnson Space Center, but later came the news; she was not selected. “Some people have described it as, ‘I failed.’ I didn’t really view it that way,” Ochoa reflected. “I tried to turn it into, what is it that I could I do that would make me a better candidate?” Ochoa took a different job at NASA and earned her private pilot’s license. Then, she applied again with some new skills on her resume. This time, she got in. Several years of training later, Ochoa was aboard Discovery, studying the Earth’s ozone layer. Getting a chance to conduct experiments in space, against a background of the Earth 200 miles down below, was more than she could have ever expected. “It was not just about experiencing space,” she said. “We were up there for a purpose. We had people counting on us. I went to Air Force pilot training after graduation in 2014. After pilot training graduation, I was asked to stay at pilot training and instruct for 4 years in the T-6 Texan II where I accrued 1100 instructing hours. This process was called being a FAIP (first assignment instructor pilot). . After that assignment, I got assigned to fly the B-52 and now I’m learning how to fly it!! I’ll graduate this summer as a qualified B-52 pilot in the 69th bomber squadron at Minot AFB, North Dakota.” . Like many catastrophic and shocking events in history, I remember exactly where I was when I heard a 47 had been shot down in Afghanistan, August 6, 2011. That type of news caused an immediate reaction, my heart sank and I couldnt believe it was true. The bird that was brought down was Extortion 17, operating at a strike force location where I had been just ten months prior to the incident. Today, we will think of all those who walked on the ramp of the helo that night, never to walk off. From the aircrew, the SEAL assault element, our brave Air Force brothers, EOD teammates, and the combat support crew who make us successful, we will not forget your sacrifice. We lost many that night, and the families were hit hard. Norman Kirby understood the hardships of war as he grew up in British Columbia listening to war stories from his grandfather, a Boer War and FWW veteran. Undeterred by the cruel realities of war, he stepped up and answered the call of duty and enlisted, at the age of 17, when the #SWW broke out. During training, he became adept at using the Bren light machine gun and the Projector, Infantry, Anti Tank (PIAT). In May 1944, he was shipped off to the UK and assigned to the North Shore (New Brunswick) Infantry Regiment – who needed a qualified Bren gunner. On 6 June 1944, his war began as he stormed Juno Beach with his regiment on D-Day. Following the treacherous landing of D-Day, Kirby continued fighting with the regiment throughout Normandy as they worked tirelessly to recapture French ports along the channel and silence the German cross-channel guns. On February 26, during the Battle of the Rhineland, the regiment helped seize the town of Keppeln, where Kirby and another soldier broke into a German garrison and captured the enemy commander. Kirby was discharged in September 1945 and returned home to North Vancouver at the age of 19. He wasn’t old enough to vote or have a beer with his father, but he also wasn’t the same youngster that left for war. For his distinguished military career and service to Canada, Sergeant Norman Kirby received many plaudits and at least five medals. In 2020, he was awarded France’s highest decoration, la Légion dhonneur. Today, he lives a peaceful life in Lions Bay, BC with his wife Victoria. They have been married for 50 years and devote themselves to remembrance. “It is so gratifying to see how appreciative people are at these commemorative ceremonies. It makes it all worthwhile.
