Ada yang merasakan gaji umr ? Ada yang merasakan jam kerja 8 jam sehari ? Ada yang bisa merasakan cuti hamil ? Dapet Thr pas mau lebaran ? Dan masih banyak lagi, oke kalo lo ngerasain itu adalah jasa dari pada perjuangan nya para buruh yang telah dibangun sekitar 3 abad yang lalu, atau mungkin bagi lo yang belum rasain musti pelajarin dan kemudian bergerak buat perjuangin nya. Menurut sejarah, kata #MayDay itu sebenarnya ga ada kaitan nya sama gerakan buruh. Gini, kaum pagan kuno memperingati #MayDay untuk menandai permulaan musim panas sedangkan di Mesir dan India kuno, 1 Mei dirayakan sebagai festival musim semi. #MayDay juga dirayakan oleh bangsa Romawi dalam festival Floralia untuk menghormati Flora, dewi musim semi. Ketika bangsa Romawi memperluas kekuasaannya, tradisi ini menyebar ke banyak wilayah. Nah, di Amerika Serikat lah #MayDay atau 1 mei berubah bentuk menjadi gerakan protes para buruh atas ketidakadilan yang di buat para majikan/para pemilik modal dari soal jam kerja yang tidak sesuai dengan bayaran yang mereka terima, soal kesehatan karena panjang nya jam kerja dan intinya tidak ada kesejahteraan atas kerja keras yang dilakukan para buruh, tepat nya di heymarket, chicago 1 mei 1886. Kemudian, gerakan protes tersebut yang akhirnya meluas ke pelbagai belahan dunia yang memicu Konferensi Sosialis Internasional menetapkan tanggal 1 Mei sebagai Hari Buruh Internasional. Di AS, Hari Buruh ditetapkan sebagai hari libur nasional pada tahun 1894. Di Indonesia gerakan buruh terjadi pada era 1920an dan terhenti semenjak orde baru berkuasa, dan masif kembali setelah reformasi sehingga pada tahun 2013, Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono menetapkan 1 Mei sebagai hari libur nasional. The Youth Are Still Watching! This morning, activists from Climate Action Carleton hung a banner at the front gates of Parliament Hill in conjunction with @climatestrikecanada and @fridaysforfutureto. The banner served as a reminder to the federal government that even during COVID-19, the #youth are still watching. On July 21st, the @fordnationdougford Ontario government passed Bill 197 — a bill that gutted environmental assessment policies for infrastructure projects in the province. Earlier this June, @jkenney’s Alberta government passed the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act — a bill that heightened penalties for Canadian and Indigenous folks protesting the imposition of oil & gas infrastructure in Alberta. Both of these bills were defended under the guise of ‘economic necessity’ during COVID-19. The governments of Ontario and Alberta are using this COVID-19 pandemic as a way to prop up and defend projects that put the safety of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, as well as the natural environment, at risk. We are calling on the federal government to work with the provinces to enact a #justrecovery and ensure the safety and well-being of our people and environment. The amount we have awarded is small; given the expenses incurred for living and for continuing a photographic project. But we hope it will carry recipients over a small hurdle that impedes their ability to work during this difficult time. This morning, Chinatown legacy small business owners and CCED held a press conference and demanded JACKSON YANG — landlord & multimillionaire Taiwanese American businessman and philanthropist — stop illegally evicting and harassing his commercial tenants at BC Plaza. 🌿CCED member Tiffany Lam introduced Allen of Golden Gifts, Mrs. Ma of 88 Gifts, and Michael of Go Go. In April, their electricity and restroom access were cut off. In June, the tenants were served eviction notices at the height of the pandemic and forced to vacate the small businesses they have owned for 30+ years. 🌿Allen shared how this experience has negatively impacted his mental health. “I haven’t been able to sleep at night because I’m so anxious. At any moment, I think they are going to throw everything in my store out, lock my doors, and I’ll have nowhere to go.” Still, Allen remains strong in fighting to stay in the space that he took over from his late father. 🌿Next, Mrs. Ma expressed the unfairness of the situation: not only were the tenants being evicted during the pandemic, they were all treated differently by Yang in terms of how much money he wanted from them. She brought up the unsafe conditions created by Yang, such as his restriction of restroom access, when frequent hand-washing is needed to prevent COVID-19. 🌿Finally, Michael, who was pushed out because he needed electricity to run his business, fought for the complete repayment of his security deposit. Michael shared about the challenges of moving on short notice during the pandemic, and how he ended up having to pay $15,000 to set up his new space and continue business. After the press conference, Mrs. Ma, who was served an Unlawful Detainer notice yesterday, rushed to return her key. After locking up the shop, the property manager tore down the posters from our press conference and spitefully said that 88 Gifts might be charged for anything left behind. No one else who moved out earlier was charged. Our fight against the harassment and evictions faced by BC Plaza tenants will continue. Once the cameras are off, they turn around and beat and spray protestors with chemical agents. Stop rewarding cops for taking a moment off of physically harming people. If you make the choice to join a system (or stay in one) that has been proven time and time again to be systemically violent against Black folks, people of color, and the poor, and profit from the murder of innocent people, you have chosen to be on the side of white supremacy. Later I started evaluating violent sex offenders in California prisons for potential release. It’s a world in which a routine day has me confronted with the darkest and most twisted acts imaginable. And my decisions could mean an offender is indefinitely committed to a mental institution – or that they get released back into society. I’m often asked how I can stand to face these men. They should be imprisoned for life, publicly identified, barred from common spaces and participation in civic life, right? They should be tarred and feathered, stoned, segregated into a special zone far, far away from our children and loved ones. Even in prison, they inhabit the lowest rung of a brutal hierarchy. I’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours interviewing these men about their childhoods, their frustrations, their demons and their drives, and the terrible crimes they have committed. Sometimes these interviews are brutal. Sometimes they are tinged with unexpected moments of understanding and compassion. But the truth of my experience is that not all sex offenders are monsters. DENVER,CO - 🚨On Thursday, September 17, police agencies in the Denver area arrested anti-war organizers in a coordinated assault. ‼️🚨👇 Those arrested included leaders in the struggle demanding justice for Elijah McClain, who was brutally murdered by the Aurora Police Department. They are still in jail, with the exception of one person. They are facing multiple felony charges and years in prison in an obvious frame-up aimed at stopping the movement for justice for Elijah McClain. Russell Ruch was arrested while in a parking lot at a Home Depot. An hour later, five police cars surrounded and arrested Lillian House while she was driving. In the afternoon, S.W.A.T. teams arrived at Joel Northam’s home and arrested him. Eliza Lucero was also arrested. All four are members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Also arrested were Terrance Roberts, co-founder of the Frontline Party for Revolutionary Action, and others may have also been arrested. They are facing multiple serious felony charges and many misdemeanors including the bizarre and ludicrous charge of “kidnapping,” all because they have organized large Black Lives Matter protests. This is a major political attack on the whole movement and the PSL. We will mount a mass campaign to defeat these phony charges and win their freedom. To honor 100 years of the 19th Amendment and the ongoing work toward achieving equity, @LACountyArts collaborated with the @LACWGI to commission six artists to create commemorative artworks for the centennial. The first of these artworks we are please to share is Unify by artist @amysmithart . In her collage portrait, Smith combines her photography with layers of hand-cut stencils and pieces of protest signage to reflect on the suffrage movement and the modern woman. By juxtaposing historic suffragette signs with contemporary portraits of diverse women, she acknowledges our past and looks to the future to do better than we did before. We evolve together, and so we rise together.
