Looking to start leading a low tox life but not sure where to begin? Start with eliminating phthalates, known endocrine disrupters of which there are a few different types in the “family”. Now I say “too often” because I’m a realist. You’re going to be in a public restroom one day with the unavoidable “psssht” deodorizing sprays in there. A taxi might have one of those horrible dangly air “fresheners” (ironic name!!) 100% avoidance leads to freak outs so let’s just do our best, right? Phthala-what now? Phthalates, are a ‘plasticizer compound’ that make fragrances last longer and they make certain plastics uber bendy / soft / stretchy – think of those kids goopy coloured gels and ‘ monster slime’ from a toy shop or a cheap puzzle play mat or a PVC raincoat or contact paper or vinyl flooring (not all new vinyl flooring though so check with manufacturer). Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products – too many to list but consider the range from raincoats to nail polish to conditioners, scented candles, yoga mats and even cute little rubber duckies. Sure, not all variants of these things contain them, but most do. I thought I’d share a few more reasons why you shouldn’t want them near you – let alone in stuff you put on or in your body. Decided to post this because I think I’m finally in a place of feeling comfortable with talking about this. I have been cigarette free for 10 days now and while it’s been a challenge it’s becoming more normal to me daily. Cigarettes had become such a larger part of my life than I had even thought. 16 years of it to be exact. The routine, the ritual, the simple fact of basically having a silent “friend” became so much more amplified since I quit. The relationship you can develop with such a substance is a very powerful thing and has seemed so overwhelming at points while going through the process of quitting. It’s going to be a day by day process but I’m excited to be a non smoker and keep leaning into new and productive routines and to break all the rituals that came with being a smoker. Today, we celebrate World Ozone Day! Ozone for Life is the slogan for World Ozone Day 2020. This year we celebrate 35 years of global ozone layer protection. This slogan reminds us that the ozone layer is extremely important for life on Earth to sustain and we must continue to protect the ozone layer for our future generations as well. Human activities have led to depletion of the ozone layer which helps absorb the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and prevents them from reaching the surface of the Earth. Besides, it helps in keeping ocean currents on their natural course. Rapid industrialisation, cutting of forest for infrastructure projects and setting up of factories and indiscriminate use of natural resources are some of the factors responsible for depletion of the ozone layer. However, this protective layer has started healing itself. Lets take this a good sign and celebrate todays day without forgetting that this is just a beginning and weve a bigger goal to achieve!
