- It’s that time of the year again.
💥YANKEES WIN 10-9!💥 UNBELIEVABLE!! THEY DID IT! The Yankees win a wild one in perhaps the game of the year. What a rollercoaster ride. Over 4 hours of just absolute mayhem, and it all leads to a Yankees plane ride to San Diego. It was a wacky one from the very beginning, with rain delays plaguing the start of the game and messing up both starters. Tanaka was not his best, although he did bounce back after a rough first inning. Still a rough start. His line: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. After the Yanks fell behind 4-0 in a 1st inning that was split up with a rain delay, Giancarlo chipped away in the second with his second home run in as many games. A couple innings later, the Yanks loaded the bases with no one out for Gio. Hicks tripled, followed by walks from Voit and G. Urshela swatted a low 3-2 offering into the night and over the left-field wall for a GRAND SLAM and a 5-4 lead in the 4th. He became the 3rd Yankee (after Gil McDougald in 1951 and Tino Martinez in 1998) o hit a go-ahead grand slam in the playoffs. An inning later, G added a sac fly to make it 6-4, but the Tribe would tie it in the bottom of the inning. Luckily, Gary quickly came to the rescue. He belted a wind-assisted 2-run shot to right to give the Yanks the lead again. It just barely scraped over the wall. Such a huge hit, and that wasn’t all from the Yankee catcher. Britton came into the game in the 6th to escape a jam with 2 on and 1 out for Green. With a 2-run lead, I loved this move from Boone. Britton induced the DP and escaped the frame. Unfortunately, all hell broke loose in the 7th. After Britton retired the 1st 2 hitters, he allowed the next 2 to reach. Boone questionably brought in Loaisiga from the pen, and he allowed a 2B to tie the game. Johnny came in for the 8th and also was credited for Cleveland’s go ahead run. It looked like the Yanks were toast. Cleveland sent Brad Hand in, who hadn’t blown a save all year. G walked. Gio singled. Torres singled. Gary then came through with a sac fly to knot things at 9, and DJ followed him up with a go-ahead single. JUST UNREAL. Now, we’ve got a date with the Tampa Bay Rays in San Diego. In a rehab start in Triple A Sacramento on Saturday, Johnny Cueto pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings, giving up only hit on a slow roller to short, striking out four, and walked none. His command and stuff were both very sharp, which is surprising considering he hasn’t pitched since late April. Cueto threw 48 pitches, and likely will have to more rehab starts before coming off the DL. This is great news for the Giants. Before going down with an elbow injury, Cueto had an ERA south of one, and was arguably the best pitcher in baseball at the time. While the Giants have gotten surprising contributions for Andrew Suarez and Dereck Rodriguez, they’re obviously lacking front of the rotation starters outside of Madison Bumgarner. When Bumgarner and Cueto were healthy in 2016, they formed arguably the league’s most dominant 1-2 punch and carried the Giants to the postseason. As the Giants continue to hang around at 40-39, Cueto’s return may be what they need to give them an extra level of confidence. Having another reliable starter would also take pressure off the bullpen, which was has been overused this season. Especially with a tough schedule coming up, the Giants need Cueto badly. They only have to wait another week or two, because he’s rehabbing much faster than anyone anticipated and doesn’t look like he missed he beat. Unlike how Bumgarner struggled when first coming off the DL, I would expect Cueto to return to the form he had before he got hurt. Obviously he won’t be able to maintain an ERA south of one, but it shouldn’t sky rocket 2.50, and considering the lowest ERA in the rotation right now is Chris Stratton’s 4.14 ERA, it clear that they would obviously take that. With Cueto back and the surprising contributions from Rodriguez and Suarez, the Giants may be fine with the way their rotation is. When 9/11 happened, the sports world was full of displays of respect, support, and remembrance for those that died and the heroes from that day... When the Boston Marathon Bombing happened, the most played clip was of Big Papi addressing the city of Boston before a Red Sox game When Hurricanes ravaged Houston and New Orleans. Houston Strong was displayed by every Texas sports team and the Saints were deemed heroes for rallying behind their city to win. In every other tragedy that has affected this country, athletes and sports have been center stage and even expected to show some statement of support for the communities that they represent. They are never looked at as distractions from the game or overstepping their place as athletes. Yet when it comes to racism and social justice and the hateful tragedies that have been ongoing in this country, the athletes that use their platform to give the same respect to those affected, are met with opposition, disgust, and criticism. I salute all the athletes using their voices and platforms. This is one of my favorite movies and I can’t think of anyone that could have played this role better than Chadwick. What a loss,so sad for his family. In 2005, directly out of college I sent my resume to resume@nationals.com . Baseball was coming back to Washington DC and I wanted to be a part of it. I was hired part time in the marketing department and the journey began. From establishing the Nat Pack, helping to implement the presidents race, and working the in-game entertainment, I formed some lifelong memories and made some life long friends. Giants closer Hunter Strickland will be out 6-8 weeks after punching a door out of frustration for his blown save in yesterday’s 5-4 loss to the Marlins. Bruce says he plans to use both Sam Dyson and Tony Watson in the closer role. Outside of Monday’s disaster, Strickland had been having a good season, as he has a 2.84 ERA, 13 saves, and a 29-13 K-BB ratio. However, his velocity and command has been inconsistent at times, and his FIP is 3.31. This inconsistency and FIP suggests he’s not a true closer, and projects better as a middle reliever or set up man. In fact, I believe Dyson and Watson are much more capable of being the closer than Strickland. Outside of Dyson’s typical beginning of the year struggles, both have been more consistent than reliable than Strickland. I think Watson has been a bit more reliable and is more capable of being the closer than Dyson. 💥YANKEES WIN 12-3!💥 WHAT START TO THE PLAYOFFS! The Yankees attack surefire Cy Young winner Shane Bieber for 7 runs and cruise to an easy game 1 win! Cole was fantastic in his 1st playoff start as a Yankee. He only really got into trouble once the whole night, and featured pinpoint command. His 13 strikeouts are the most by a Yankee starter in his postseason debut (per ESPN). Only Roger Clemens (15) has fanned more in a postseason contest than Cole did tonight for the Yankees. Cole’s line: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 13 K. The Yanks struck immediately for 2 runs in the first off of Bieber. DJ led off the game with a single, and Judge belted a 1st pitch fastball over the wall. With that HR, Judge tied Reggie Jackson and Gehrig for the most postseason homers in franchise history (9) through 125 plate appearances (Via @DanAlanRourke). HR S/O: @rob_revie In the 3rd, the Yanks extended the lead to 3-0 thanks to a quick 2-out rally. Hicks grinded out a 3-2 walk, and Voit CRUSHED a double to the gap to bring him around. After Cleveland scored one in the 3rd, the Yanks got 2 more back in the 4th on a Gardner RBI double and a DJ RBI single. In the 5th, Torres delivered a back-breaking blow for the Tribe. His 2-run shot over the high wall in left-center extended the lead to 5. The nail in the coffin was the 7th. Urshela started it off with a sac-fly, Gleyber added an RBI single to his big night, and Gardner belted a 2-run shot to extend things to an overwhelming 11-2 score. Giancarlo added one more in the 9th with a long homer to left. After struggling to finish the season, Gleyber showed up in a BIG way. He went 4/4 with a HR, 3 RBI, a walk and 3 runs scored. Gardner went 3 for 5 with a HR, a double, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. The Yanks made a bit of a controversial call by not playing Clint, but it clearly worked out. The big guns didn’t even have to pitch tonight. Cessa’s line: 2.0 IP, 2 H, R, BB, K After limping into the playoffs, the Yanks seemed to flip a switch and dominated this game in every facet. The Yankees win and defeat the Mariners 4-2! Lance Lynn rebounded from his last horrible start, as he went 6 strong innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits by striking out 2. McCutchen got the Yankees out in front in the first as he blasted a solo home run (17). The Mariners responded in the 3rd as Mike Zunino smacked his 19th to tie the game at 1. In the 5th with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Stanton hit a deep fly ball to score Gardner and put the Yanks up 2-1. In the bottom of the frame the Mariners responded again, by tying the game at 2 thanks to a Dee Gordon single. In the 7th it was Austin Romine who drilled his 10th home run of the year, putting the Yanks up 3-2. Zach Britton was able to pitch a scoreless 7th as he struck out 1, and Robertson was able to strike out the side in the 8th. In the 9th, Gleyber Torres added an insurance run with a sac fly to score Wade. Dellin Betances was able to pick up his 3rd save of the year, as he struck out the side in the 9th. Andujar and Torres both recorded 2 hits, in their battle for the rookie of the year. Giancarlo Stanton continues to struggle as he is held hitless again. Lance Lynn improved to 9-10 as the Yankees pickup their 89th win of the year.
