Utilizada durante anos não só para retirar pedra mas também como lixeira, a pedreira vinha sendo deixada ao abandono e entulhada com os desperdícios das construções que se iam fazendo por aquelas bandas. A construção do novo estádio permitiu redescobrir o que estava por baixo desse entulho: a Ermida do Santo Cristo, concebida em 1517 por João de Castilho. Esta ermida faria parte, juntamente com a ermida da Madalena (hoje integrada no complexo da Casa Pia de Belém), e a de São Jerónimo, no alto do Restelo, da rede de ermitérios da cerca monástica dos frade Jerónimos, um lugar de retiro e meditação.
