The man in the photograph above is Donald Rutter, who was a member of the HQ Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne. Started a new great war page @faces_of_ww1 Please follow our WW1 educational page full of amazing colorized images and stories He is holding an M1 Garand rifle and in the background is a C-47, very much like the one that dropped him into Italy twice and then into Normandy before being captured and sent to Stalag 4B near the Czechoslovakian border. His first combat jump was into Sicily, followed by Salerno, then into Normandy. After landing just north of St. Mere Eglise, Rutter found a small group of paratroopers and joined them in the fight. The whole unit was constantly harrassed by sniper and machine gunfire. A snipers bullet barely missed Rutters head, flying just inches to the side over his shoulder. Their makeshift unit was overwhelmed by German forces early that morning, and thus Rutter spent the rest of the war as a kriegie, a POW. Here in the US it is not just the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1, it is also Veterans Day. Id like to send my respects to all the veterans who follow my page, those who have fallen in combat, and all the members of our fine military past and present. If you all want to protest peacefully and want justice for George Floyd, fine. But don’t you dare for a second put me and my brothers and sisters in the same group as this piece of shit. On September 15, 1950, during the Korean War, Marines with 1st Marine Division, under the strategic direction of General MacArthur, made a risky, surprise amphibious landing at the port of Inchon on the west coast of Korea, also known as Operation Chromite. The 1st Marine Division faced a daunting challenge — to deploy hurriedly down the narrow port under the worst tidal conditions they had ever experienced. Despite grueling conditions, the Marines were able to recapture Seoul, the South Korean capital that had fallen to the Communists. This was rather unusual as but that time in 1917 almost all troops would’ve just had the newer Small Box Respirator, meaning one of those soldiers still was using the PH Hood. —— The PH Hood/Helmet (PH meaning Phenate Hexamine) was an early British Gas mask of WW1, introduced in July 1915 after the ghastly Second Battle of Ypres which brought in chemical warfare. A funny part about this gas mask is when you use the exhale valve it makes a funny sound. The German strategy for Operation Barbarossa (June 22 1941) . Since 1940, the Germans had already been planning an Axis invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, codenamed Operation Barbarossa (see previous post). Stalin had been warned several times for an Axis invasion and the Soviets did make significant preparations, but Stalin desided not to run the risk of provoking the führer by stationing too many troops and tanks on the westfront. . Meanwhile the Germans had secretly been moving around 3,8 million Axis soldiers and several thousands of tanks and aircraft to the eastern front in preparation for the invasion. The führer and his generals had planned the following invasion strategy. The Axis army, which consisted of around 150 divisions, would be split up into three Army groups: Army Group North, Army Group Center and Army Group South. Army Group North would advance into Northern Russia and try to capture or destroy the city of Leningrad. Army Group Center, which had the most armoured divisions and air support, would advance from Poland into the western center of Russia and advance towards Moscow. Army Group South would march through Ukraine from the south, capturing Kiev and then move eastward into Russia to take the oil-rich Caucasus area near Stalingrad. . The German forces in conquered Soviet areas (mostly Waffen-SS and Einsatzgruppen Units) had to control the areas, preventing any partisan activities and execute captured Soviet political commissars and Jews. The Germans expected a rapid advance into Soviet territory without many obstacles, after which the Red Army would collapse. . What was their biggest mistake during the invasion of the Soviet Union?
