The Middle White became known as a specialist pork producer and in the first half of the 20th century was very popular and widely exported. The breed was known as “The London Porker” because of high demand for Middle White pork in the capital. The increasing demand for lean pigs for bacon production led to a decline in the Middle White’s numbers in the UK. However with customers increasingly interested in quality meat the Middle White has enjoyed something of a resurgence and Middle White pork again commands an enviable reputation. #tongueouttuesday! 👅 . . We are planning to move the girls to their winter digs this weekend. I am so excited to have their smiling faces right outside the backdoor once again. . . Since the pigs can be 1/4 or 1/2 mile from the farmhouse and their water system is largely hoses, they move back to their winter area as soon as things start getting seriously frosty. The sheep and goats, who return to the barn at night and during inclement weather, will keep rotating until the ground freezes and we can no longer move their fencing. . . How do we get the pigs back home? As highly food motivated animals, our pigs are ‘bucket trained’ to follow me with feed. Early morning update on Jessie from Yolandi The Rhino Orphanage. “Jessie is ok. She was all over the place yesterday though. Very panicky, very anxious. Even If I just moved a little she would jump and frantically call. If me or Zanre left the room, Jessie would freak even though the other person is still there. She had a complete meltdown in the afternoon so dr Pierre said to give her a mild sedative. She has slept well last night, just calls every now and again to check if Im still there. This poor thing has been through a lot hey. Definitely traumatized. Shes drinking vey well at least. But her tummy is still quiet. We are adding extra fibre to her milk and im giving her a warmwater enema later to try soften the fecal balls so they move”. To this I want to add that Jessie’s mom was definitely poached. At least 2 days before we found her. From the wound on her side it would seem the poachers also struck at her but luckily she managed to evade any serious blows. Jessie is now getting the best care possible and will be bottle fed till she can eat solids. This means carers will be with her for the next 3 years after which she will be released back into the wild. Rhinos soon rewild. They disassociate from humans quite quickly, luckily. Care is very costly and the Orphanage does not charge us any fees for raising our orphans. If you are keen to donate please do so direct to the Rhino Orphanage. See the link below. Antibiotic resistance is now considered a global public health crisis. Some researchers are predicting that by 2050 our resistance to antibiotics will cause up to 10 million deaths every year, outdoing cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide. Antibiotics are (over) used in animal farming due to the intense farming processes that exist within the meat industry. The practice of animals being forced to live in confined, crowded spaces; not being given enough time to recover in-between births; and baby animals being taken away from their mothers too early places a strain on the animals’ health, compromises their immune systems, and increases the risk of disease transmission. Due to this risk some countries use antibiotics as a preventive measure, meaning these medicines are given to animals as soon as they are born, whether they are ill or not. Other countries use antibiotics to make livestock animals grow faster, so that profit margins are increased. Every time we use antibiotics (whether in humans or animals) we risk the development of drug-resistant bacteria (a superbug). By using antibiotics in animals when they are not sick, we are adding to the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing. Remember that saying ‘you are what you eat’? Because our health is closely linked with the health of our ecosystems, and the animals in it, the use of antibiotics in animals can affect humans as diseases can be shared between humans and animals through direct contact. This is not to say we should stop using antibiotics altogether. Antibiotics are needed to protect the health of humans and animals, but should only be used when the animals are already sick. While the vast majority of antibiotic resistance is still caused by overuse in humans, researchers continue to acknowledge that the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture does pose a risk to human health. Limiting antibiotic use in animals is therefore an important step in reducing the risk that antibiotic resistant bugs (that can ultimately affect our health) develop in the first place. - @no_meat_may on Instagram

Last night I assisted three fellow activists in the rescuing of three piglets in Melbourne. They were bought for a Melbourne Cup party and made to race and were then destined to end up on somebodies plate. We suspect that they have severe sunburn or mange due to the condition of their skin. And they all currently have ear infections and worms which can now be treated. I am very happy that these boys and girl get to live out the rest of their lives free from harm and never end up as anybodies meal 😊 - @vegansofaustralia on Instagram

❗ Animal-rights activists cited in attempt to rescue a pig at Farmer John slaughterhouse, in the U.S - full article via our story 🐖 The activists managed to get into the huge facility, wearing worker uniforms it seems, and got as far as the exit with one of the victims of the animal exploitation industry. At this point it seems the workers trapped them and stopped them from leaving with the pig 💔 They did however manage to obtain hidden footage from within the slaughterhouse which is expected to be released imminently. farrowing crates often get a bad reputation from people who don’t understand them. But these pens offer tons of protection to the piglets. The bars surrounding the sow helps her to lay down slowly so the piglets that may be underneath her have time to move out of the way before being crushed. Each farrowing crate has a feed trough for the sow as well as 2 water nipples, 1 at standing height and one at a height the piglets can reach as well as the sow when she is laying. Das Schwein ist nun mal als Schwein geboren als Schwein wird man nun mal geschlachtet. Aber was kann denn Rosalie dafür? Was kann Rosalie dafür, dass sie kein Hund geworden ist ? Weshalb darf sie denn kein schönes und gutes und glückliches und langes Leben führen? Ich finde,sie darf das auch als Schwein. Ich finde, es ein großes Problem, das wir der Meinung sind ,Tiere in verschiedene Kategorien einzuteilen . Manchen zu erlauben ein gutes Leben zu führen und andere nach kurzer Zeit zu töten. I’m sitting here in bed going through these photos of them on my Instagram and I feel so far away from them now. I want to go back & sit with her, just hold her & cry because I don’t know how to save her You have no idea how it feels going into this darkness, seeing them like this. Scroll back up & really look at her, look at her eyes & her babies...are we really doing this to them? I have literally died inside. I’ll never feel real happiness while they are suffering, I can feel them in my soul every minute of the day, behind every “happy moment” all my jokes & laughs, she’s there. All of them are, sitting so heavy inside my chest. I’ve said this for years & it’s still the same, even though I appear happier now, I’ll never leave the darkness. My friend told me a few months ago that my ex Jessie messaged him while we were together saying “I’ve lost her bro, she’s gone into the darkness from this & she’s not coming back” hearing that really hit me I did mushrooms once to try & release some of this, because seeing a psychologist just doesn’t help, they really just don’t get it. During the trip I was hanging off my bed crying in so much pain, my friend was telling me it’s ok to let go now, that I can’t carry all of this but I can still fight for them. I was crying hysterically saying no into my pillow curled up “I’m staying with them” If I leave the darkness it means I’ve let go of them. I refuse to just get on with my life. That’s why I keep going back If you haven’t been inside & met them like this you will never understand what if feels like. The suffering in the air as you walk toward these sheds. Opening the door & seeing all of them. I can’t smell the night air without thinking of them now There is a real darkness in this world & it’s us, we are doing this to them by choice. We have chosen to be evil, allow the industry to hide them away, package their bodies & feed us lies. I refuse to let them win. This needs to end. I don’t know why anyone would be ok with paying for this to happen to someone else. This is her life, this is her soul, her body. Who are we to do this. What do you see in Alberts expression in this photo? This was taken the day Albert and his buddy King arrived at @crittercreekfarmsanctuary. Both boys were considered cull piglets--piglets on a factory farm who are either too sick or too small to bother to continue feeding. Such piglets are killed at 3 months of age, generally by gas chamber. • Albert, King, and 40 other piglets were saved from the gas chamber by Erika Lovato (@panglossblue) of @Sisurefuge. As you would expect, many were terribly ill due to the deplorable conditions at the factory farm. Albert and King had infected hernias that required surgery. Others had respiratory and skin problems. The piglets who were healthy had never before seen sun and all were sunburnt as they ran in the grass and played for the first time in their lives (despite the sunscreen rescuers applied). • When Albert and King were being transported here, I wonder what was going through their minds. Maybe they thought their rescuers, the only notpigs to ever show them kindness, were taking them back to the factory farm? Or even somewhere worse? In Alberts face in this photo, I see an animal who realized he had been taken somewhere full of love and happiness. La truffe se trouve à une profondeur de 0 à 20 centimètres dans la terre. Il est donc difficile pour l’Homme de la trouver seul. L’aide d’un animal est alors indispensable. Historiquement, on utilisait le cochon. Le cochon laboure naturellement la terre pour se nourrir de larve, de racines et aussi de truffes. Il est tenu en laisse afin que le trufficulteur puisse rapidement récupérer la truffe avant que le cochon ne la mange. Aujourd’hui, le chien est le compagnon idéal pour trouver la truffe. Il est moins encombrant, plus pratique à manier, il a une durée de vie plus importante que le cochon et surtout il ne mange pas la truffe quand il la trouve. Le chien est éduqué à chercher la truffe. Ce qui lintéresse, c’est la récompense. Il est lâché en liberté et sa mission sera alors de marquer de la patte l’endroit ou se trouverait la truffe. Le trufficulteur déterre alors la truffe (souvent avec un “cavadou”, nom donner à l’instrument pour déterrer), et offre une friandise au chien pour le récompenser. Il n’y a pas de race spécial, l’important est qu’il soit bien entraîné. La mouche à truffe est un insecte qui ressemble plutôt à un gros moustique et qui pond ses oeufs au dessus de la truffe afin que ses larves s’en nourrissent. C’est pour cela qu’on peut constater des larves dans les truffes parfois. Pour repérer cette mouche, on fouille à l’aide d’un bâton, la mouche s’envole et reste à la verticale de ses oeufs. In de bossen van de Pyreneeën loopt het Gasconne varken. Een zeer oud weidevarken van het Iberische soort met grote, naar voren gerichte oren. De Gasconne, ook bekend onder de naam “Noir de Bigorre”, is tegenwoordig grotendeels weggekruist en daarom zeer zeldzaam. Het ras is afkomstig uit dezelfde streek als het Gasconne rund, dat al sinds 1987 in de Baambrugse weiden van Lindenhoff graast. Jaren geleden werd besloten dat er ook maar eens wat Gasconne varkens moesten komen. De Citroën werd gestart en met een gangetje van 120 km/u werd er naar Zuid-Frankrijk gereden. Sindsdien is Lindenhoff de enige plek in Europa – buiten Frankrijk – waar dit bijzondere ras wordt gefokt. - @lindenhoffbaambrugge on Instagram
