Nivea Men, the official men’s grooming partner to Liverpool FC, has unveiled a giant mural in Liverpool city centre to celebrate its long-standing partnership with the team and to congratulate it on its League championship win. Devised by Carat UK and Posterscope together with Mural Republic, the striking mural features a hyper-real recreation of a photo of the players embraced in a hug and is supported by a digital out of home takeover throughout the city. Multiple high impact screens across roadside, rail, POS and shopping malls leading with creative that combines Jürgen Klopp’s famous “Boom” with the Nivea Men logo, and the #sharethecare to encourage sharing on social media. The mural is situated on one of the largest available sites in the UK. We are devastated like everyone else in the hospitality industry this evening with the new government restrictions. ⠀ We invested so much time and money to abide by the government regulations to make the restaurant as safe as possible for our staff and customers and now, this evening we are told we can’t serve indoors for 3 weeks from midnight tonight. How can businesses survive or continue with these new restrictions. It’s such a difficult time. ⠀ We have very little seating capacity outside so we will remain open for takeaway and collection from tomorrow and if the weather is good we will have seating outside. ⠀ We want to thank all our customers and suppliers for continuing to support us. It’s Pride Festival time, so a happy Pride to all our LGBTQ+ followers. I’m going to take a look a couple of prominent LGBTQ+ Hungarians from history this week, starting with the fascinating life of Count László Almásy – better known as the English Patient (yes, the one from the film). Unfortunately, the film took an inordinate amount of liberties with Almásy’s life. He did not fall in love with his nurse, but instead the Hungarian pilot was exclusively gay, sharing beds with German military officers and even a few Egyptian princes (quite the résumé). Almásy fought in both World Wars, was a noted desert explorer (discovering the prehistoric art-filled Cave of Swimmers in the Sahara Desert) and an inveterate firebrand who attracted trouble like nobody’s business. He even drove Karl (grand-nephew of Emperor Franz Josef) into Budapest in the 1921 in doomed attempt to restore the monarchy (it’s thought that this is how Almásy became a count – the title was certainly not hereditary). The real story of Almásy is more interesting than I could ever include here, and far more riveting than that rather dull film. Read one of the many books about his life – you won’t regret it. I AM QUEEN MARY Virgin Islands artist La Vaughn Belle and Danish artist Jeannette Ehlers have teamed up to create a monumental public sculpture entitled I AM QUEEN MARY which was inaugurated on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Danish West Indian Warehouse in Copenhagen. This project is the first collaborative sculpture to memorialize Denmark’s colonial impact in the Caribbean and those who fought against it. Timed to be unveiled at the end of the centennial year commemorating the 100th anniversary of Denmark’s sale of the Virgin Islands to the United States in March 1917, this project challenges Denmark’s role in slavery and the commemoration of its colonial past. It aims to change the narrative around this history by centering the stories and agency of those who were brought to the Danish West Indies and demonstrates how artists can be leaders in this conversation. #artforchange #iamqueenmary #changethenarrative - @beckheiberg on Instagram

Next up for Pride Week it’s Hilda Gobbi, a famous Hungarian actress who I repost yearly due to her general gloriousness. Gobbi worked for Resistance during Nazi rule in Hungary (handing out forged documents that exempted men from military service), and later left the Communist party she once cherished, believing they’d betrayed the working people (Gobbi had, in her younger days, been homeless and destitute, something which helped shape her politics). She gained fame as an actor, first at the National Theatre, then the József Attila Theatre. She was also well-known for her role as Aunt Szabo on radio drama The Szabo Family. Gobbi lived as an out-and-proud lesbian in a time when homosexuality was illegal in Hungary. She defiantly dressed in men’s clothing and had long relationships with actress Hédi Temessy and author Erzsébet Galgóczi. She never forgot her early struggles, and set up care homes for elderly actors to live out their later years with dignity and comfort. This statue is another Péter Párkányi Raab work. England is very well known as a birthplace of industrial revolution and Manchester witnessed every bit of it. Starting from textile manufacturing to invention of computer named Baby, the city saw it all. From leading the task of breaking Nazi ciphers during WWII to becoming the founding father of artificial intelligence and of modern cognitive science, mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing lived most of his life in the city. A statue of him located inside a park in Gay village at the city centre is a tourist attraction and is also a starting point of the free (pay what you like) walking tour of the city. The tour gets interesting as the city history unfolds in front of you by the local guide as you visit different locations around. You would be amazed to know how Manchester played a pivotal role in the revolution and served as a innovation hub in the country. Vimto monument at the University of Manchester Sackville building stands as a very good example of how diverse areas of innovation the people from this city delved into. Vimto was the first nonalcoholic drink invented at this very place in competition to alcoholic beverages and is still very popular among the Brits. A short walk from here takes you to China town and neighboring gay village. The canal street here is a very popular destination famous for gay friendly bars and pubs which has now become a place of interest to visitors to the city. Central Manchester also houses many buildings of historical interest including warehouses turned shopping complexes, old hotels from the WWII times, and the bomb shelter which is now taken over by British Telecom. It is amazing to see how the new and the old constructions coexist adding a cool vibe to the city.
