This morning my Father in law Al Kasha passed away. He had a long bout with Parkinson’s and Dementia. He was a Great Song Writer, a 2 time Oscar winner for best songs 72 & 74, a Producer, Record exec. A brill building song writer, who came up in music bus in a very exciting time. Wrote songs for Jackie Wilson, Bobby Darin, etc..worked with Aretha, Neil Diamond scored the music for David Copperfield and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on Broadway etc... Mr. Willie Pickens. Master pianist, composer, and educator. One of the greatest! Tough on his pupils but, showed a lot of love. Came up in a time where he could not vote, walk through the front door and such. Passionate about knowing your history, in and outside of the music. Despite not being able to pay him, he gave me a couple of free lessons right before Oberlin. That’s the type of man he was. I don’t take students really. I know that I could never teach the way he did. I’m a horrible teacher. Sincere apologies to those who have studied with me in the past lol. I love y’all. Anyways, Mr. Pickens played like it was his last chance on every song. With dynamics and elite musicality. Always fresh, true to the music, the game, and himself. A real one. Francis Rocco Prestia RIP. Words can’t do justice to how important this man was to me. He is key to the success of the legendary Tower Of Power band, as his bass playing was one of the ear-opening hooks of all their grooves, which were driven magically by the combination of himself and David Garibaldi. RIP DAD This picture will forever be my favorite for a lot of reasons but primarily because you were beyond happy that day. You fought as hard as anyone could for the last several years and anyone that knew you knew just how strong you were. Im glad youre no longer in pain because we knew you lived with it every day, but your experiences with family and friends kept you going. This will take a lot of time to process because I still dont think its really hit me but Ill forever be grateful and appreciative of everything youve done for all of us. One of the things that pains me the most is that all of your grandkids wont get to experience life with you in it anymore and that will always hurt. Happy Birthday Norman, we miss you! ❤️ Today marks 100 years since the birth of Norman Dewis OBE, the Jaguar test driver and engineer who developed dozens of Jaguars including the E-type. He was Britains greatest test driver, completing more than one million test miles at average speeds over 100mph during his career. Also, Norman Dewis played a pivotal role in the development of the revolutionary Jaguar / Dunlop disc braking system. More than all that though, he was a lovely man, a great friend and supporter of the JEC and an incredible talent. Norman wished to celebrate his 100th birthday on 3 August 2020 by driving a Jaguar at 100mph once more, but he sadly died on 8 June 2019, aged 98. - @jaguarenthusiastsclub on Instagram

***Please see comments for full story, thanks**** often when we hear about acupuncture the stories are not centered around Black practitioners, which is why most people are unfamiliar with Mutulu Shakur being the founder, and creator of the NADA protocol. National Auricular Detoxification Association was founded by the Black Panthers, Republish Of New Afrika, and Young Lords at the Lincoln hospital in South Bronx. They developed a program called the The People’s Drug Program in response to the rising opioid epidemic.   🦇 Mutulua Shakur was a prominent member of the Republic of New Africa when he saw the power of acupuncture heal people severely injured and traumatized in car accidents.  Shakur and others sought out literature about acupuncture and soon came together to learn and practice acupuncture at Lincoln Hospital 🦇 At the height of the drug epidemic in the 1970s, the Lincoln Detox Center, functioned as a community gathering place that offered acupuncture treatment, political education and community service.  The program used some drug intervention for the initial stages of withdrawal, like methadone, but would wean people off of it using acupuncture, bringing hundreds and hundreds into full recovery.   🦇 Not only did The Lincoln Detox center help people recover, it restored a sense of agency, and presented the opportunity for former patients to become acupuncturists too, and treat folks moving through the program. 🦇 on November 30th, 1978, a task force of 200 police officers closed down the Lincoln Detox Center.  State officials claimed the drug program was “badly mismanaged and that the program leaders had threatened reprisals if there as any attempt to outs them.”  But Shakur and others new that policymakers found acupuncture to be a threat, as the rest the of the hospital was chaos, while their program thrived and healed thousands 🦇 A little under a hundred patients protested outside the center in response to the shut-down and said “the armies of slum-lords, script doctors, organized crime, greedy drug companies, methadone pushers, corrupt cops, and producers of rot-gut win are plundering our communities and warned of the dangers of methadone from - @midwestresilienceapothecary on Instagram

The 17-time grammy award winning singer-songwriter crossed over into virtually every genre. From starting his own Recording, Publishing & Management company, to owning his Masters in the 60’s and setting the tone for Black ownership, his legacy is astounding. His rendition of “Georgia on my mind” was made the official state song of Georgia. We lost our Friend and neighbor last night. Mac Davis. Singer, songwriter, actor, TV Show host, husband and Father. Mac was our poker buddy and my golf mate. He was funny and had more stories to tell than anyone I’ve ever known. He brought so much joy into our community and our lives. He fit in with everyone and everyone loved him. Willy T. Ribbs stared down racism square in the eye. It blinked and ran. Knowing that racism was very real, even in his native California, the Ribbs family instilled in Willy a hunger for excellence in order to make it. His father was already a racer, albeit at the club level. It fascinated Willy so much, he chose to pursue motorsport as a profession. Exellence was to be put on display. In 1977, Willy moved to England trying to break into the ranks of single seater racing. A reputable team saw the raw talent was more than evident, so a campaign with Formula Ford cars was developed in the Star of Tomorrow, a sort of feeder series into the feeder series. Ribbs dominated the championship, winning 6 of 11 races. A lack of sponsorship stopped him graduating to faster cars. Returning Stateside, Willy hoped international success would open doors. It should have, but for one obstacle: Despite being 14 years after the Civil Rights Act, Racing while Black was still very much taboo in American motorsports. Willy experienced vile racism firsthand agreeing to race a stock car at the ironically named World 600 Mile Race in 78. Event promoter Humpy Wheeler was ready to integrate, hiring Ribbs to compete to then attact a Black audience. His customers and the other competitors werent so willing. Denied a license to race, a car, and the constant death threats forced Humpy and Willy to cancel. His talent eventually got the attention of DeAtley Motorsports which gave Ribbs a ride for the 1983 TransAm Series. It was Willys first taste of sportscars and the fastest ones hed ever raced. The rookie impressed, winning the most races (5) and championship runner-up. 12 TransAm wins and 8 IMSA GTO wins followed from 84-88. He even tested an F1 car in 85. Willys success broke barriers and proved a Black racer can win, and big. One goal was left: May 1991. Last Chance Qualifying. No sponsors. Salvaged racecar. Hand grenade of an engine. Despite this, Willy drove the fastest laps of his life to earn his first Indy 500 start, the first African American to do so. The entire Indycar field applauded him! Al fianco di Vincenzo Muccioli sin dall’inizio, fu una figura di estrema dedizione e impegno negli anni in cui prendeva forma il metodo di recupero. . Senza riserve anche nei momenti difficili, fu saldo nella scelta di vita di dedicarsi all’impegno per il prossimo. Un impegno condiviso con la moglie Maria e il figlio Claudio, attualmente uno degli educatori del Centro minori femminile all’interno della Comunità. Per San Patrignano Egidio, originario di Cesena, rinunciò a una vita sicura e comoda per seguire come volontario Vincenzo nei primi anni Ottanta, conquistato dal grande progetto di solidarietà che divenne poi San Patrignano. Con lui furono gettate le basi dell’odierno Centro Medico, struttura sanitaria che si occupa della salute di tutti i giovani del centro di recupero. Nel tempo libero, si dedicava agli animali da cortile allevati in Comunità, che accudiva dimostrando un amore smisurato per la natura e per la vita. We are so saddened by the passing of the legendary Toots Hibbert. He was one of the kindest souls and I had the pleasure of working with him on three of his albums. One of which won a Grammy for the best reggae album of year in 2004 (produced by Richard Feldman, mixed by me). He was so friendly to everyone he met. He used to say to me “Hey T! You and me! DONALD SCHNEIDER: During the whole project, while working in total secrecy, we could feel that we’re on to something very big. But of course we all had our moments of doubts, even Karl. After powerful #earthquakes rocked the island, DAV Department of #PuertoRico service officers and #volunteers got to work, assisting hundreds of veterans with physical and mental health screenings, medication refills and more! Most of the southwest area of the island was damaged. Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced issued a state of #emergency and activated the National Guard to assist in recovery efforts as most Puerto Rico homes lost power. ・・・ While the tragic events wreaked havoc on countless citizens, #DAV members and officials across the island mobilized to help hundreds of affected veterans mere hours after the quake. ・・・ Angel Quiñones, treasurer of Chapter 4 in Ponce, began coordinating efforts with other DAV chapters across the island to distribute canned food, personal hygiene items and other supplies. “DAV chapters were always calling, asking if anybody needed anything and making sure we were safe,” he said. “It was incredible work.” ・・・ To help assess and track veterans in need, Perez-Cabrera and Department Adjutant Delvis Collazo-Rivera traveled around the southwestern area visiting the various temporary camps. The duo made a list of veterans who were there to help them with DAV funds. Those funds included more than 150 disaster relief vouchers for veterans and their families who lost their homes. I first met Mr Summons at an ARL RL coaching clinic as a teenager at the UNE. Mr Summons would wake us at 6am with a cow bell to get us up for breakfast prior to our first session for the day. Implemented by Mr Paul Broughton & Mr Peter Corcoran with coaches assembled like Mr Arthur Beetson,Tommy Raudonikis,Wayne Pearce,Roy Masters, Benny Elias & a man called Wayne Bennett! Can you believe that list.Totally privileged, so grateful to have these memories. As Johnny Lewis echoes loudly,never forget the men and women who dug the well we drink from. In this first picture from 2015 Mr Kelly, Mr Summons,Changa & Dougie at a Save Our Sons luncheon. And the next is the picture that Mr John OGready captured that depicts an entire sport. On a much lighter note, my great friend Campo and a few of the kids broke curfew we were sixteen perhaps. We were told in no uncertain terms that anyone caught off campus would be sent home on the train to our parents. Well all I can say factually, is that we walked into a pub, and some of our coaches were assembled for a debrief. Definitely not Mr Summons,for the record. We froze completely, some more than others,twenty pubs(perhaps exaggerated a lil for effect)and we walk into this watering hole! Our coaches let us stay an hour or so, but made us walk home in the freezing cold. That night,I witnessed a real life dummy spitting competition!
