// Happy First Day of Autumn! • While we may not have the variety of color-changing foliage of other cooler climes, there is a characteristic South Florida native that offers some amazing color changing displays over the course of the autumn and winter. • Throughout the spring and summer the large, almost circular, broad, leathery leaves of the seagrape are evergreen and have distinctive red veins. Beginning in the late summer though, the leaves begin to turn to a red-orange, evolving into a candy apple red or a deep red right before they fall in winter. Maple cream-filled little leaves. Okay. Origin tale, no one asked for it, but here we go. Rewind 6 years, a younger me on a trip to see my friend in Montreal, walking to the epic chocolate mold warehouse near her house. I was there to get a bunch of new molds for our Vandana Shiva bonbons, but was also told I could putter around and see if there were any new molds worth getting for the shop. Cut to: a huge room of floor to ceiling industrial racks of chocolate molds, and a very excited & dismayed me, taking hours to browse through every single one. Cut to: my friend patiently waiting on the shop couch, wishing it would all end soon. I found this leaf mold, had visions of hand-painting them autumnal colors and filling them with maple cream, and brought it back to NY. That first year we only had one mold to work with, and we were much smaller then, so we could make do. We’ve since ordered many more, and here we are.
