LawBird: Grab-n-Go The idea of survival is intriguing. Greg and I sometimes like to watch Naked and Afraid because to me, it is absolutely remarkable to watch how people figure out how to survive a thing. The past few months have forced us to identify all kinds of ways to survive. And survival looks different for different people. Survival for parents might be “Hey kid, just watch tv for 2 hours so I can get this work done.” Survival for students is “just-let-me-get-through-this-online-mess.” Still others, ‘I need to survive COVID.” Survival is messy, and unexpected. The need to survive reveals who we’ve always been, but have never had the urgent need to be. Survival requires evolution. This is what has been so interesting to watch during quarantine: local businesses figuring out how to survive. How they’ve adapted into the highest form of themselves. Sure, not everyone has been able to fight it out. But any person who can make any idea real in this city is surely destined for greatness. What @lawbirdbar has become is your new favorite corner store. It’s what adult recess would look like if it were actually a thing. Everything is bright. It’s a happy place. It’s my happy place. Shelves of oddball wine selections (even mystery packs), Japanese snacks and treats, wine bags, shirts and a library of beautiful cocktails are all rooted in what Annie and Luke do best: surprise and delight. Somehow, using just a fraction of the space, they’ve managed to shove eight feet of awesome into a four-foot sack. It’s FUN in there. They way they’ve laid it out, I had to do several laps so I could be sure I saw every. single. thing. before deciding what to finally buy. The ‘internationality’ of it is inspiring. There were more words in there I didn’t know than words I did – and that’s exciting to me. So many new things to try. They have Kewpie Mayonnaise, Hi-Chews, Pocki, and Fritos. If Joy was a place, this would be the gift shop. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever seen in this city. Survival requires evolution. Evolution is exciting. LawBird Grab-n-Go is exciting. Finally got round to using this percussion hand tape from @eucatape and it’s voodoo. My hands barely stung at all at the end of a 3 hour set.
