So this is 32. It feels weird and vain to reflect on the past year as a personal victory when the world, in general, has gone to heck... so I’ll be brief when I say that I started my 31st birthday realizing that I was very lonely, had zero work-life balance and had a number of habits that were coping mechanisms-by-way-of self harm. It took falling in love with an eleven lb fruit bat to convince me that 14 hour work days were unsustainable, and it took falling out of love with a handful of people to convince me not to make myself smaller for anyone. I don’t get to celebrate surviving another year the way I’d like (gender bend karaoke; running my favourite race; spending the long weekend in my favourite places), but ringing it in with @clove_tho and knowing that Clio and Stuart are moving in with us in a month certainly quash all the lingering loneliness left over from last year. It’s a lovely feeling. But enough about me - we’ve got a world to save. *Amplify Black and Indigenous voices. *Vote if you are eligible, and vote with your wallet too. *Donate blood if you are physically and politically able. *Spread your wealth, energy and privilege around in support of people who have less of those three than you do. *Don’t be an asshole. *Do as much therapy as you can afford to do. *Eat less meat. *Pay for art. *Clean your glasses (using lukewarm running water and dish soap). Time is a funny thing. Culturally we’re taught to stay busy. Our time becomes so saturated by “busyness” that we find it slipping us. Animals, especially fur children have a funny way of reminding us to slow down and appreciate the little moments in life. Hank, my fur-ever best bud... Wise beyond his 4-legs has taught me so much about this conceptually in the time that I’ve had him. More recently, I’ve begun to feel the brevity of his mortality reading and nearing its ugly head. His complete loss of hearing, routine confusion, constant need to “go out”... All produce heartbreaking daily reminders. You see, my old boy is more than sixteen now. And age aside, has lived a life so full that would put that of his human counterparts’ to shame. He’s a survivor. Thrived. Happy go lucky, sometimes headstrong little guy who I was some how, in the circumstances of tragedy blessed to call my own. I don’t know how many days lie ahead for us together here on this earth. To be honest, I was insecure about this look for the music video at first. No mascara, no foundation, no lipgloss - just me in my natural state. 14 years ago I kissed alcohol goodbye! Happy sober birthday to me! 🎂🎉 I’ve officially been sober twice as long as I partied! Something I dont talk about often, but my sobriety is one of the accomplishments in my life Im most proud of. My amazing older brother Jeff and I were living together in LA...anyone who hung out with us surely had THE BEST time ever! He challenged me to take a 3 month breather from any mind altering substance to get my shit together and I loved how healthy I felt so I just kept going clean, one month after the next. I didnt go to meetings, just had plenty of ridiculous memories and stories to encourage me to make better decisions. As with wellness, people are often focused on what they are giving up, instead of GAINING! I gained even more confidence, a true understanding of myself, honestly faced and moved though challenges (still do with healthy tools) and am 100% conscious and proud of the things I say, fuck yeah baby, and do! A hope in being vulnerable and sharing about my sobriety is that it might encourage anyone who feels they have a substance abuse problem to talk to someone, check out a meeting and take a step to potentially save your life. @nuzzledarks , 2018 Last week my garbage disposal died. I could have just made my landlord pay to have the handyman come out and replace it with a new one, but there was a part of me that really wanted to replace it myself. This was pretty low risk because if I got to a point where I was in over my head I could just go back and say “let’s get the handyman.” Instead I replaced it myself, no problem. It felt really good. I’ve always wanted to make darkroom prints of my work but I just don’t have the space for something like that, and I don’t want to make the investment until I can put together a dedicated darkroom. Back in June I started experimenting with cyanotypes as both a way to keep myself busy with new processes but also as a way to challenge myself. In times like these it’s really nice to have something to experiment with that allows me to use my existing catalog since I’m creating very little new work. Most recently I’ve been busy working on something else but once that is complete I really want to get back in there and make some my cyanotypes. Initially I was only making prints from my back and white photographs because… well I’m not really sure. Then I started converting some color photographs to black and white and making prints of them as well. I remember posing for this picture as if it were yesterday. It was 1993-94. We were in LA for the run of SUNSET BLVD at the Schubert Theater which has since been torn down. We survived a major earthquake, mudslides, the arrest of OJ and the death of Jackie O. Annie turned 6 surrounded by our extended SUNSET family. What a deluge of happy memories!! To create the @judy.chicago Podcast Series I sat down with Sarah Mitchell, Director if Exhibitions at the Pasadena Museum to choose a podcast theme to go with each piece of art in the exhibition. @lauraprepon sent me an early print of #YouandIAsMothers as a gift when my son was just 2 weeks old. I could not believe how much this book spoke to exactly what I was going through in those early weeks and months with my baby. From extreme anxiety to body issues to challenges with my husband, she had gone through all of it, wrote it down, and was there to comfort me during this time of extreme vulnerability and tenderness. I’m going to be giving this book as a gift at all baby showers from here on out, but this is also really a book for all women, mothers or not. I have so much admiration for Laura for having the courage to share her deeply personal struggles and pain because she made me feel like I wasn’t so alone with mine. She also gives a lot of great advice for how to get through some of the challenges of early motherhood (and life in general) - tools that were legitimately helpful and that I go back to again and again. It’s #worldbreastfeedingweek, and I I want to share my own experience in the hopes that it will help transform judgement into support for those on their own journey. After Max was born in April, I went into breastfeeding with hopeful optimism based on everything I’d seen and read. But when my milk didn’t come in right away, my almost 10-pound baby lost too much weight in his first few days and on top of that, I was experiencing excruciating pain while trying. Wasn’t this supposed to be easy? Natural? The doctor mandated formula on day 3 and I remember feeling so much relief that he was finally eating. I couldn’t see a lactation consultant in person because of COVID, and then on top of everything, I had a horrific, month-long bout of mastitis from a resistant bacteria that knocked out my hard-earned supply at week 3. I was so disappointed that my body wouldn’t cooperate. Once I was well again, Max and I got into a triple feeding (breastfeeding, pumping and formula) rhythm over the next few weeks, and I started to ask myself, if he was fed and happy, why had I been upset when I couldn’t get the hang of it? Even now, 15 weeks in, we’re still finding our groove triple feeding, and he’s perfectly happy with all of these options. I’ve learned to read his cues, to try not to force anything, and just do what feels right for us, and I finally feel like we’re doing great with it. But getting here was HARD. There just isn’t enough information, enough support, or enough grace given to new moms who are trying to do their best. Here is what I think about breastfeeding: 1. Whether you breastfeed, triple feed, pump, formula feed, IV feed or a combo of these, YOU ARE DOING AMAZING, SWEETIE! Your kid is happy. You are a great mama. 2. Breastfeeding isn’t for everyone, and that doesn’t make you less of a woman or a mother. It can be hard, painful, inconvenient, impossible or just not what you want to do, and that’s okay! Any decision you make is the right one if it works for you. 3. Try not to judge parents for any decisions they are making for their family. Worry about yourself, and if you can’t support others, at least try to keep your opinions to yourself. ❤️ - @rachbarb on Instagram
