Look closely and enjoy the strange, otherworldly beauty of Umbilicaria lichens. There are several species found growing on rocks all around Unalaska Island. These hardy lichens can survive long periods of drought. Some species have been found to survive up to 62 weeks without water!

As October approaches, spotted lanternflies will begin to gear up to lay their eggs. Egg masses contain 30-50 eggs and are covered by females with a mud-like gray substance which cracks over time and looks a bit like mortar. The insects are not picky in where they lay them – you may find masses on trees, fences, and outdoor furniture, among other objects. You can help by locating these egg masses on your own property and destroying them! It is possible that eggs can survive if scraped onto the ground, so scrape egg masses into a bag or container with rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, or a bleach solution and dispose. Good news for the American Burying Beetle! They have been downlisted from an endangered species to a threatened species. . These beetles were once found across Missouri and in much of the United States, but the species has been endangered mostly from habitat loss. . Small populations of beetles hatched at the Saint Louis Zoo have been released in recent years at the Wah’Kon-Tah Prairie and Taberville Prairie conservation areas in St. Clair County. . Thanks to our partners at Missouri Dept. of Conservation and Saint Louis Zoo for years of collaboration restoring a sustainable population of these insects in Missouri. . 📷: Bill Graham/MDC - @nature_missouri on Instagram

. . . #Ollademono #P4F #ProductosDelBosque #ElBosqueEnTuMesa #ConexiónVital #Madera #Bosques #Conservación #protección #Biodiversidad #BiodiversidadColombiana #Naturaleza #ComunidadesCampesinas - @instituto_humboldt on Instagram

Texas Gold Millipede - - Scientific Name: Orthoporus ornatus . Taxonomy: Animalia -- Arthropoda -- Myriapoda -- Diplopoda -- Spirostreptida -- Spirostreptidae -- Orthoporus -- ornatus . Status: least concerned . Features: This species has a gold colored body (hence the name) with dark brown segment lines. Typically has a dark brown head. Has been recorded up to 6 (15.24 cm) but on average is about 4 (10.16 cm) . Distribution: Can be found in the wild in U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas as well as the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. . In captivity: This species prefers more arid conditions than that of previous Florida species. In the wild, they prefer more sunshine than many species. Note, desert does not equal 100% sand. Still keep them in a substrate of mostly organic soil. Also to note, dont be worried if your millipedes disappear for the winter months; its completely normal and they should reappear in the spring! . . Footnotes: N/A . 🐛Personal Notes🐛 Sorry for skipping around with species! The reason Im covering the Golds now is because I just got several of my own! They are absolutely wonderful and my biggest species to date. They do spray their toxins much more often than my other species, but of course it isnt dangerous. In my tank, I experimented mixing my usual substrate with childrens play sand (so its non-toxic) to try and aerate the soil better. So far all is going well and they seem to enjoy digging into the sand. Also, as the holidays are here Ill probably be posting less for the next couple of weeks. At the most I might post every other week instead of every week, but it shouldnt be any longer than that. Thanks for reading! . . Have any species you want me to cover or have questions on? Texas Brown Millipede - - Scientific Name: Orthoporus texicolens . Taxonomy: Animalia -- Arthropoda -- Myriapoda -- Diplopoda -- Spirostreptida -- Spirostreptidae -- Orthoporus -- texicolens . Status: unknown . Features: This species is typically darker than O. ornatus with a dark brown/red body and red line segments. However, some places show them as being a light sand color*. Adults average at 6 (15.24 cm). . Distribution: Can be found in the states of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Probably possible to find them in surrounding states in desert environments. . In captivity: This species prefers more arid conditions as a desert species. Keep in a less humid environment. Note, desert does not equal 100% sand. Still keep them in a substrate of mostly organic soil. I mix sand in with my other desert millipedes so its about 90% dirt and 10% sand. . . Footnotes: *I have a feeling the sandy colored texicolens belong to a different group, or it could be vice versa and the darker ones are separate. If anyone can clear that up, let me know! . 🐛Personal Notes🐛 Hey yall! Its been quite a while but Im back from holiday so its back to more millipede reports. Im having trouble finding research papers on lesser known species so if anyone has documents Id love to see them! Most old research reports are either outdated or they have been deleted. . . Caterpillar of the Day Follow Along: Weekend Days 260/261⠀ ⠀ Meet the Maple Looper Caterpillar, Parallelia bistriaris.⠀ ⠀ The maple looper is easily overlooked, both as a frosted green early instar resting along maple leaf veins, and as a striated brown or gray final instar pressed against twigs and bark. Still, I have found them to be one of the most common caterpillars on summertime maples and a quick shake of a branch over a white sheet often produces a few. Careful with common names like looper which has been applied to caterpillars from at least three major moth families. The maple looper is in the family Erebidae, related to moths like underwings and Zales, and not at all related to the inchworm or vegetable patch loopers.⠀ ⠀ Raising caterpillars often yields surprises - things you would never discover through outdoor observation alone. Immediately after the maple looper pupates, the fresh pupa is smooth and dark brown like many others, but within hours it develops a thick frosty white powder across its entire surface. We have seen this feature in a few other groups including the Catocala underwings and Drepana hooktips, but the maple loopers frosting is by far the most extreme we have observed.⠀ ⠀ Is anyone out there in caterpillar-land aware of how this frosting is generated and what purpose it plays?⠀ ⠀ --------⠀ Caterpillar: Maple Looper Caterpillar; Paralleia bistriaris⠀ ⠀ Range: Eastern North America⠀ ⠀ Host plants: broad generalists on a variety of plants; maple is a favorite⠀ ⠀ Season: Caterpillars throughout the summer with two generations in many locations⠀ ⠀ Where are they now: Overwintering as pupa in loose cocoons (likely in the leaf litter)⠀ --------⠀ ⠀ #moths #mothsofinstagram #thecaterpillarlab #caterpillar #caterpillars #nature #naturephotography #science #entomology #lepidoptera #scienceeducation #naturalhistory #art #artandscience #buglife #exciting #insects #bugs #insectsofinstagram #followalong #lifecycle #2020 #macrophotography #insectphotography - @the_caterpillar_lab on Instagram
