Hey! We are back! This account will be solely to talk about our green programs, you can follow @pergaminocafe for all the rest. We wont be too intense, with weekly or biweekly posts about whats going on. This week we visited Inzá to follow up the end of the harvest there. Still a lot of great coffee drying in beds but most of the good stuff is now coming into the warehouse. The harvest was slim due to lots of rain over last years flowering period but the 2019 harvest is looking strong! Flowerings have started and the climate is perfect so far, alternating between heavy rains and weeklong dry periods. Ther has been lots of changes in our work here but we are still working with most of the families with which we started our program 5 years ago. Hi #ExoticPeople ! Ayo, ada yang tahu gak sih jajaran kokoh di foto ini apa? Nah buat yang belum tahu, itu adalah Karst Sangkulirang Mangkalihat. Terletak di dua kabupaten di Kalimantan Timur, yaitu Kabupaten Kutai Timur dan Kabupaten Berau. Kawasan karst ini dikelilingi oleh dinding-dinding terjal, gua bawah tanah dengan ukiran alam eksotis, serta perbukitan hijau yang membuat travelers terkagum-kagum. Kawasan ini mempunyai luas mencapai 1,8 juta hektar, di mana kawasan ekosistem inti seluas 550.000 hektar. Sungguh menjadi aset bangsa yang sangat berharga karena memiliki nilai ekonomi, budaya, sosial, dan ilmiah. Menurut hasil penelitian, kawasan karst ini memberi informasi tentang jejak manusia purba yang bisa dilihat dari lukisan tangan, gambar perahu, dan lukisan berbagai jenis binatang yang tergambar jelas pada dinding-dinding gua dan konon telah ada sekitar 10.000 tahun SM. Di sini juga ditemukan tulang, wadah yang terbuat dari tanah liat, serta alat-alat yang terbuat dari batu. Masih dari hasil penelitian, diperkirakan penyebaran rumpun manusia purba Austronesia diawali dari pegunungan karst Sangkulirang. Ini artinya, Karst Sangkulirang Mangkalihat menjadi titik awal kemunculan manusia purba yang ada di bumi pertiwi. Di tempat ini terdapat situs berharga, seperti untuk bidang plaeontologi, arkeologi, situs fosil, struktur geologi-mineral, litologi, serta beragamnya flora dan fauna endemik. Keberadaan gua-gua, sungai bawah laut, cadangan batu kapur dan bahan semen pun cukup melimpah sehingga cocok sekali dijadikan spot pariwisata alam. It wasn’t easy filming this production and this next episode into the Jungles of Borneo with a Dayak headhunter tribe is a testament of that. We took wooden long tail boats into the heart of this wild country in search of jungle Mahseer, one he most challenging fish to catch that we’ve ever encountered. . We had a small army of Dayak tribesman assisting us on this exploration and with there help there was nothing in our path that could stop us. Everyday we pushed deeper into what was assumed the impossible and unnavigable by boat. We yanked boats up waterfalls, up rapids and sliced through anything in our path. . We saw the battle remains of dead people. We were attacked by leeches everyday. We experienced horrific flooding and almost lost one of our base camps when the river flooded up 14ft and one night a jungle old growth fell and by some act of god managed to not smash us in the middle of the night. Free refills! Spraying supermagro. It is a homemade mix of pig manure, milk curd and molasses. We let it cure for a number of months before spraying so that the microbial load is high. We also add a few micro-elements like zinc and Borax. The idea is to give the plant some nutritional support directly through the leaf to help with fruit development. The sprayer is motorized so the guys can due in a few hour what would take days to do with a hand pumped sprayer. The sprayer is too expensive for one farmer with only a small amount of land to justify. But Catracha has 2 motorized sprayers to help out at many different farms. It also creates regular employment for these guys who do the spraying. Every morning at sunrise the Buddhist alms giving ceremony takes place in the streets surrounding the temples. A monks day begins before sunrise, around 4am and at 6am they leave to collect offerings of food from local believers. Generosity is a core part of Buddhism and the alms are a part of the continuing teaching and practicing of generosity for Buddhists. The food that is offered during the alms is not only for the monks, they keep as much as is needed to feed the members of their temple (also known as a wat in Laos) and the rest is given to local people who are suffering from hunger, including children living in poverty. The alms happens every day of the year.
