Where do your heart and soul call home? 🏡 In the most surreal of circumstances, we search for authenticity. Sometimes, that means returning to passions we’ve lost touch with in our lives. Roger Medearis (1920 – 2001) was an artist, born in Fayette, Missouri, who studied under Thomas Hart Benton and showed early promise in the movement of Realism. In 1946, after his service with the army came to a close, he moved to Connecticut where he built an artist’s studio. At his first show in 1949 at New York’s Kende Galleries, seven of his Realist paintings were sold, and a piece from his subsequent show in 1950, “Family Reunion”, was later exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But with income scarce, and Abstract Expressionism growing in popularity, Medearis grew disillusioned with America’s fading interest in the art of Realism, to which he had dedicated his life and studies. He moved from Connecticut back to his Midwestern roots, working as a paper salesman for over 10 years. He would avoid virtually all exposure to art. By the 1960s, however, after moving to California, Medearis found himself visiting art galleries and museums again, and in 1966, he converted his garage into a complete studio. He resigned from the Container Corporation of America and once again, began painting. In the decades that followed, Medearis continued to hone and evolve his technique, creating his own, unmistakable style. He continued to paint until his death in 2001. Was asked by my friend @raissa_pardini to work on this unique project alongside a handful of some of my favorite artists. Each person made a letter or number to contribute to the overall typeface that would become “Group” in which all proceeds of its purchase and usage will be donated to the @who. I ended up creating the uppercase C mostly by hand drawing, scanning, and then revising on the computer. Many thanks to everyone involved. Commercial fishing has long been a source of income for families up and down the island, and French Creek is no exception. This image shows an undated photograph of the flats at French Creek; a mix of small boats with oars, outriggers, and outboards; and a few larger commercial fishing vessels in the background. Not the French Creek we know today, with its wharves and piers; warehouses and processing plant; and the market itself. My axis has been shifted and the catharsis gifted to me allows this proffering. ——- I never knew you. You were taken from me violently in an act that was senseless and random. That justification never equaled wholeness. That little boy sitting on the park bench swinging his legs with the wind blowing his bangs as leaves on a tree in silence. Riddled with guilt; shame; resentment and no self love was me. ——- I wore the mask well Dad; you were proud of that as you subscribed to the “no emotion” male club as I felt that in my core. Very good condition, creased from folding with discoloration to creases, minor edgewear. Class War was an anarchist newspaper and organization started by Ian Bone in 1983, and was largely responsible for introducing Autonomist ideas to the London anarchist community. They garnered significant media and police attention for their political and confrontational actions. Class War published provocative graphics such as an image of Margaret Thatcher with an ax in her head, and enthusiastically supported striking miners, dockers, and print workers. Music historian Ruben Molina @flacosoul, who has his own deep roots in Elysian Valley takes us on a journey through the neighborhood, also known as Frogtown, weaving in stories, and soundtracks, from a childhood spent along the Los Angeles River. Through his vivid, personal history, Molina treats us to a firsthand view of a neighborhood that has been molded by natural and manmade forces, yet like the river it borders, retains a spirit all its own. In lieu of the ridestream, we’ll be sharing audio clips plus bike safety tips from SCAG and the Metro Bike for future rides via our IG stories plus a planned future rebroadcast. This project is made possible by a mini grant through the Southern California Association of Governments’ Go Human program, funded by the CA Office of Traffic Safety. The first three episodes corresponded with a Metro Rail transit corridor currently under construction. Robert Hooke was #onthisday in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wright. Hooke was a Surveyor to the City of London and, in partnership with Sir Christopher Wren, created the design of The Monument, which took six years to be completed, from 1671 to 1677. Hooke worked with Wren on the design of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Montagu House in Bloomsbury, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital. They were keen astronomers, which is why The Monument was built to also serve as a Zenith telescope. 🔭 Hooke died on 3 March 1703.
