I’m so thankful that God chose me to be the mother of these 3 kids because I don’t know where I’d be without them. They complete me. They make me feel like I have a purpose and like no matter how hard things get, they cheer me on as if I came in first place. This Mom life is hard y’all. Some people make it look easy but I would never say it is. It’s easy to love them, no doubt. But when you want to be selfish, irresponsible, alone, cute, in shape, drunk, and the list goes on..... they throw a wrench in your shit so quick. They’re demanding! 18 facts for parents of newborns 1) There will be sleepless nights. But it does get better. Usually by 1-2 months. 2) Grunting and straining are mostly normal. If seems like true pain, contact your doctor. 3) Diaper rash will happen. Have Vaseline or diaper cream on hand. If it doesn’t work might be yeast. 4) White patches in the mouth that can’t be rubbed off can be thrush. Need treatment from your doctor. 5) We take fever realky seriously in this age. Anything over 100, call you doctor. 6) Spitting up can be normal. If every feed and forceful or pain associated, call you doctor. 7) Feed on demand at first. It will give baby practice (breast or formula fed) and get milk supply in. 😎 Watch for yellow to the eyes and skin. If significantly yellow or not feeding well, it’s more concerning. 9) You can supplement a baby with formula and still have a successful breastfeeding journey. We don’t have to rush to it but sometimes it helps. 10) Get advice from family and friends you trust. Ok to ignore the rest. Don’t ask on social media. 11) Spend lots of time talking, singing and reading to your newborn. It’s probably the single most important thing you can do for their development. 12) Place them to sleep in a boring crib. Someone will tell you that they’ll sleep better on their tummy. Ignore that person. 13) Every week is a new phase. Be flexibility where you can. If you hate this phase, there’s always next week. 14) it’s a lonely and hard time to be a newborn parent right now. Cut yourself some slack if not everything is going as you planned. 15) It’s ok to not love the newborn period. It doesn’t make you a bad parent. 16) Some sadness with new baby can be normal. But if it feels too much or lasts longer than a few weeks, talk to your doctor. 17) All parents should be allowed to make their own choices. No one does everything the same. 1of6 Olive’s labor was hard and long. Posterior with her hand up- a beautiful labor but long and hard. It taught me so much about myself and Olive. Coming from that and going into a new experience I had been working hard to renew my mind and cast off fear. The fear that it would be so long that it would be stop and start for days on end. Believing for something different. The biggest theme for Wells’ labor was SURRENDER. Surrender to the time line, to the labor waves, to the unknown and trust that my body knew what to do, Wells knew what to do and that God had ordained all of this long ago. “So I let go and I let love show me life like it’s supposed to be. An oasis it awaits me all the freedom I’ll ever need.” This was my anthem the last few weeks of pregnancy. I again found that the spiritual and emotional prep for labor was transformative. Beautiful how God has designed it. My labor would fall very close to Bryant’s biggest event of the year and timing Bryant being able to be there and my parents coming up from Texas felt like a lot for my pregnant heart. I had read about a lot about unassisted birth this time around even though we had a midwife, I was just intrigued. I had so many people with Olive, what if I did the opposite this time? What if it was just me bryant and my midwife? So we went for it. 4 years ago today I brought this baby boy earthside in my home in a giant tub in the middle of our living room. I watched friends and chatted with Travis and our midwife and doula between contractions until I was about 8cm dilated....the female body is UNREAL! A huge benefit of breastfeeding is that breastfed babies are less likely to catch or develop infections, and if they do, they are likely to recover more easily. I think this is one of the hardest things I’ve done, in 2013 we figured out I had scoliosis and since then I knew I would have to have this surgery but didn’t think it would be this soon.
