In this photograph, Funeral pyres burn at Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and most sacred place for Hindus to be cremated, on the banks of river Ganges in Varanasi, India, Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. For millions of Hindus, Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage and anyone who dies in the city or is cremated on its ghats is believed to attain salvation and freed from the cycle of birth and death. मेरी प्यारी ईजा आज फिर से एक बार चिठी लिख रहा हूँ । सिर्फ तेरे लिए मुझे पता है तू कुछ हैरान सी होगी इस चिठी को मिलने पर और सोचेगी व्हाट्सएप के इस दौर में भला चिठी कौन भेजता है। आज सब लोग अपनी अपनी ईजा के साथ सेल्फी लेकर व्हाट्सएप और फेसबुक में डाल रहे हैं। मैं भी डालना चाह रहा था तेरी फ़ोटो लेकिन मन नहीं कर रहा था। एक महीने से ऊपर हो गया है lockdown को अब दम घुटने लगा है इस बन्द कमरे में, सोच रहा था अगर ये lockdown जल्दी ख़त्म हो जाता तो घर आता और तेरे साथ बैसाख के महीने का काम समेटता। कमरे में एक खिड़की से रोशनी आ रही है और कल शाम के झूठे बर्तनों में मंखियाँ भिनभिना रही हैं। ईजा तू मेरी फिक्र मत करना मेरे पास सब कुछ है खाने पीने के लिए बस ऐसे ही अक्सर तेरे खयाल आया जाते हैं तो खुद को रोक नहीं पाता हूँ और तुझे फ़ोन कर देता हूँ। मुझे नहीं पता रहता है कि तू खेत में काम कर रही होगी या गोठ से गोबर निकाल रही होगी और मैं यहाँ बैठ के आराम से तेरे से बातें करता रहता हूँ और तू कान में एक कपड़े से फ़ोन को बांध कर ना जाने कितने काम निपटा लेती है। अभी परसों बात हुई थी जब फ़ोन किया था तब तू खेत में गेहूँ काट रही थी और तूने बताया गेहूँ चूटने के लिए कोई मिल नही रहा है अब जो तू दिल्ली से बोतल लेकर आया था वो किसी को दूँगी तो वो थोड़ा बहुत गेहूँ चूटने में मदद कर देगा।फिक्र हो रही थी हर एक बात पर कैसे बैसाख के महीने में पानी पीने तक का टाइम नहीं होता है लोगों के पास और मैं1 घंटे से बात कर रहा था और ईतने समय में गेहूँ काटकर घर गयी और दिन का खाना बनाया और गाय भैंस को भी नहला दिया था और मैं सिर्फ सिगरेट की कश मारते हुए तेरे से बातें कर रहा था। याद है पिछली बार दीवाली में जब घर आया था तेरे साथ कितना काम किया था, गाय भैंस को नहलाया और घर का काम फिर शाम को खेत में घास काटने आया था और तुझे याद है वो शांति चाची क्या कह रही थी। ओ सरूली दी आब च्याल क बया कर दे कब झालें बुत कराली घर पन क आब जवान है गयो । मेरे चेहरे में भले ही एक मुस्कान थी लेकिन मन ही मन तेरी फिक्र थी कैसे इतना सारा काम कर लेती होगी अकेले ही। मैं सुबह सोया रहता था और तू पता नहीं कब उठ जाती थी पता ही नहीं चलता था ना कोई अलार्म की जरूरत थी। सुबह जब आँखे खुलती थी तब तक तूने घर का आधा काम निपटा लिया होता था। और मेरे हाथ में चाय की गिलास देकर कहती थी जल्दी उठ जा नहा धोकर मंदिर में दिया जला। और रात को याद है मैं तेरा फेवरेट गाना चला देता था। डबली वाले डबली बजा जा. #thelostpahadi #pahadi #kumaoni - @thelostpahadi on Instagram

A well camouflaged Flakpanzer IV AKA “Whirbewind” looking out for approaching enemy aircraft. The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind (Whirlwind in English) was a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun based on the Panzer IV tank. It was developed in 1944 as a successor to the earlier Möbelwagen self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. The combination of armor and rapid fire from the four guns of the Wirbelwind made it very effective against lightly armoured ground targets such as trucks and armored cars; infantry were particularly vulnerable. It’s been 2 weeks since the devastating explosion, this is what we’ve done so far. Our team of volunteers quickly mobilized their efforts to carry out an emergency response, assess the damages and establish a rehabilitation program in 2 severely damaged areas: Karantina and Mar Mikhael. Our aim today is to rehabilitate 30 buildings and homes in these neighborhoods and guarantee a safe return home to 150 families. I dont know what it is called in English, We call it as ತಡ್ಪೆ . I hope all the people of Tulunad know about this. It is used to separate variety of small sized impurities such as dirt, stone, and husk from wheat, rice or pulses. This method is called winnowing( It can also be done by handpicking). My mother used it from my childhood to the present and the legacy will certainly continue. Tulunad was mainly dependent on agriculture and more important was the cultivation of paddy. In the Past, The owner used to offer paddy to his worker. They prepared it manually for cooking with the help of mortar and pestle method.The paddy rice is filled in the mortar and pounded until the hulls are separated from the rice. The process is repeated until the desired quality is reached.Then the rice is poured into the separate containerತಡ್ಪೆ and winnowed to separate the hulls from the grains. The entire process is called Rice Husking During the difficult time the farmer would pick up the remaining rice and trash from the plant and prepare the rice. In such tough time, ತಡ್ಪೆ is credited with separating the trash and spreading the joy on the farmers face. The cord is collected from the woods and used to make ತಡ್ಪೆ , which is a very beautiful art and it still exists in some places. I am proud of it. Every day is a bonus. This is WWII veteran Joe Demler of Port Washington, Wisconsin. The first photo was taken in Spring 1945, at the German Prison Camp Stalag XII-A in Limburg, Germany. During WWII, Joe served his country with the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. For Demler, the Battle of the Bulge came to an end on the night of Jan. 4 when a German Panzer IV tank fired a shot through a stone building where he was acting as a lookout on the second floor. The impact launched Demler from the floor into the ceiling. Two companies of American soldiers, more than 300 including Demler, were captured, interrogated and packed into train cars to a prisoner of war camp. The Germans took Demlers weapon, ammunition and rations. His overcoat, the one thing that had kept him alive during the bitter cold, was burned at his POW camp because of lice. Each day 10 men shared one pound of cheese and a loaf of German rye bread made mostly of sawdust. Demler rapidly lost weight. As more American POWs arrived, Demler learned the war would end soon. On the day he was liberated in April 1945, Demler weighed only 69 pounds. A Life photographer embedded with liberation troops snapped Demlers photo, published a short time later in Life magazine. Doctors estimated he would have likely died within three days had the war not ended when it did. Day after day, this 19-year-old prisoner went through true hell, but he survived. He later said: What kept me going? The will to live. You always look forward to living. Thats what kept you alive. You prayed & thought positively all the time. Every day is a bonus. It took Demler months to regain his strength before he returned home to Wisconsin, where he worked at the post office for 37 yrs, retiring in 1982. He raised three children with his wife, Therese. You cant have a defeated attitude. Thats why Im alive, said Demler. Every day I think about it. It never goes away. Joe Demler passed away in February of this year. He is now at eternal rest. Grashmi pulled over to the side and I asked them if we could share some biscuits and water bottles. The mother answered for them. No, she said, we have enough. The father echoed, hai didi, kaafi hai. Kisi aur ko de dena. The little girl in white, Sapna, grinned. Biscuit hai kya? We got out of the car and handed over biscuits to the little girl. And her brother, Raj, in purple, wanted one too. SHATTERED DREAMS: Kishori Raut Kurmi, 65, of Bishrampur, Parsa has a family of seven. He lives in a small house with a thatched hay roof. Four years ago his son Mukesh, 39, left to go to Saudi Arabia, where he would get a job and support his family. He borrowed Rs 1,50,000 from someone from the village and was slowly paying his way. “He had planned to pay everything off this year,” says Kishori.  When the pandemic started, the Kurmi family was making do with what they had. Three months ago, Kishor was sitting outside in his yard getting vegetables ready for dinner when the phone rang. “They told me my son, Mukesh, had died in Saudi Arabia,” he says. The family learned that Mukesh died in a road accident while trying to send money home. A few days later his son’s body arrived home in a coffin. “I am devastated,” says Kishori, “We sent our son abroad and we were weaving many dreams, but the dreams are shattered. According to the statistics from the Foreign Employment Promotion Board, an average of two Nepali migrant workers die abroad every day.  Mukesh’s company has not sent the money his son earned, and Kishori has not heard anything from the Nepali government on compensation or relief. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he has not been able to mourn his son’s death properly. For now all Kishori can think of is how to survive another day, “We are poor people.
