For at least a decade now, I have been training myself to be a “fierce, independent woman”. My #zodiac sign is Cancer ♋️, and let me tell you, I’m a cancer through and through. I’m stubborn to a fault, and I will struggle with something for a verrrrry long time before asking for help. We hear it in the media all the time... women who are #strong and #independent are portrayed as heroes...someone to look up to. But, something has been sitting heavy with me lately. Why do we push ourselves, our friends, even our daughters to be so independent? Why has that become so valuable in our society? Because let me tell you, my independence did not come from a place of happiness and and ambition. My independence came from literal hell. From #TRAUMA. From the inability to #trust anyone to actually be there for me. From the fear of being let down if I let someone in. Some women are not thriving on their independence. Some of us are constantly fighting for #survival. We’re pushing our way to the top of the food chain because we’ve experienced the bottom and it’s not pretty. Some of us are broken and tired and just waiting for someone to hold us so tight that we no longer feel like we need to have it all together. So, with this, I encourage you to be careful when raising your daughters to be independent women. Yes, it is great to be able to use power tools and change your own flat tire 💪🏻 Yes, there is value in being comfortable in being alone. But be sure that the foundation of that independence is #SELFLOVE. Be sure that the women in your life are independent because they are comfortable in their own skin, and not because they are terrified of trusting anyone enough to let them in. Decided to start making homemade masks to donate to whoever is in need. @damnhell & I got a great pattern from @rachgharris81 & @dr.scottharris using cotton fabric with a waterproof plant cover inner lining. Keeping clean hands, trying our best to make sanitary masks that could help others. May not be hospital grade but could be helpful to seniors or others in need. *Please don’t comment nit picking our efforts. We are just trying to do what we can :) If you know anyone, anywhere in the southern Utah area or anywhere we can send these let me know. Checking with local senior living facilities. We have supplies to make quite a few! They take some time as I get the hang of it, but it feels like a good use of time. I’m not sharing this to pat myself on the back. Just sharing an idea our cousins had and we felt inspired to try the same. My brother Tyler has been making incredible masks with his 3D printer. My hope is that things like this may be contagious too along with positivity. Take this time to relax, decompress and stay healthy and in a good headspace. I’m a very determined person; now that I know I can actually reach my goals, there’s nothing stopping me. - In 2018, I was struggling with being addicted to meth, while trying to care for my 4 children. I was not taking care of my mental health and self-medicated with drugs. I kept my children with me because my mother left me when she was in her addiction, and I didn’t want to do the same to mine. What I found myself doing was worse. I had them in unsafe environments and was unable to get them their basic needs. With most of us living through these tiny little squares it’s sometimes easy to forget that behind the scenes is a real human, just like ourselves, who has struggles just like we do. It’s so easy to get into a routine of scrolling and comparing, scrolling and comparing, scrolling and comparing. I’m incredibly guilty of this... I see photos of beautiful, shiny, smiley humans and instantly wish I was them, but just like me, they may be having their own issues and worries. What we see in these photos is a moment in time, a snap second of their day, the one they are comfortable showing. We can never know what is going on behind closed doors and in the minds and hearts of the people we compare our own lives to. So I guess what I just want to remind you all on this Sunday eve is to never compare yourself to others, we all have our own paths, and to be kind. Life is challenging as hell and times are hard right now so remember to check in on your loved ones team. Even the ones who seem to have their shit together ... more times than not, it’s those ones who are struggling through the smile. Be kind, always. Let me know which ones you’ve already checked off! ☑️ 🔸Use your platform! Whether it’s the family you see around the dinner table, your coworkers, or an online audience—you have influence. USE IT FOR GOOD! 🔸Take a moment to call and email those in power to DEMAND CHANGE! It gets easier the more you do it! Whenever I have out of town visitors, I always take them walking at the Kenosha Pier. It’s my favorite place because of the art structures and beautiful lake view. Taking memorable pictures during a sunset with the lighthouse in the background is so amazing. 2) What local or regional event do you look forward to each summer? Each winter? Kenosha is a great place to be in the summer season. I look forward to the Kenosha Market, the festivals, Jazz in the Park, art events and other live music throughout the city. 3) What do you wish people knew about your job? I work in a fun, fast pace industry where there’s always something new happening. The staff here is great. They have love and passion for their jobs, which show through their stories and experiences. I wish more people knew how great and rewarding it is to work for a newspaper like ours. 4) Milwaukee or Chicago? I grow up Milwaukee but have never visited Chicago as a kid. When I was 19 I took my first trip to the big city of Chicago. I still remember the emotions running through my body when I saw the downtown area for the first time: the tall buildings, all the people, all the excitement; there was so much to see and enjoy. Chicago may be a great city, but there is no place like home. 5) What habit or hobby do you pursue because it makes you happier? I don’t have a steady hobby but I do like to do crafts with my grandchildren. I try to do different activities with them to keep our visits fun and exciting. Our newest thing is rock painting. Dynamic, lightly flecked and full of colour, it’s an aesthetic the animator and illustrator attributes to her moving to London from China six years ago. “My mum sent me to learn drawing and Chinese painting when I was four years old, so I started really, really early” she tells us. I just sobbed into my 8 year olds shoulder. Maybe it was the daily squabbling that has become the soundtrack of my household. Perhaps it was the pressure of pandemic purgatory finally releasing in a tidal wave of tears. More than likely it was my 4 year old throwing a hockey stick across my living room in the throes of what feels like his 243rd tantrum since this all began. Raise your hand if you know what this new normal feels like 🙋♀️ _ I ache to return to some sort of autonomy. Everything I am. Everything I do. Everything I’m struggling towards is for them. With them. Surrounded by them. And feeling like failing them is worse than failing at any other relationship or business. I feel like I should be better at this. As I write this echoes of another argument is bubbling up between them and I want to hide. _ Am I excited about being able to reopen? Absolutely. Although I’m sure this post isn’t instilling a lot of faith in my state at the moment🤷♀️ Like many other moms though, I am not in a position to simply return to business as usual. And this current stage is just another layer the gamekeeper has dropped into the arena for us to figure out. _ Meeting with some of the team via Zoom last night made me realize how much I missed them, our work, serving others and the joy of weddings. Going through another day reminded me that I need to lean on them now more than ever. My team is excited and ready to get this rolling. _ P&B has plans. We are taking a phased in approach that will adhere to provincial guidelines and keep everyone safe while reinstating our services in an organized fashion. This process will take a few weeks with an administrative return as of May 5, 2020 where clients can access our booking calendar and speak to our staff via phone. Details to follow! _ Please watch for updates as we establish our hours, staffing levels and priorities for the weeks ahead. We all want to go back to business as usual but we want to do it the right way. The healthy way.
