On this day in 2000 Ariel Sharon delivered a massive insult to the Palestinian people and also Muslims everywhere by barging through the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem (with his and all officials shoes on to boot). Riots ensued and were met with tear gas and rubber bullets that caused permanent disability to hundreds of Palestinians. The uprising that ensued was known as the al-Aqsa intifada and over the course of 2 years it claimed over 1,000 Palestinian lives and resulted in over 13,000 of our youth being held captive, effectively destroying a generation of the resistance. Today would have been day 7 of the 2020 Olympics games in Tokyo. I decided when I was 5 years old that I wanted to represent Australia at the olympics. I was fortunate enough to have that opportunity twice, in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. I’ve been thinking of all the athletes who held the same dream in their hearts like I did, waiting for their chance this year. The Olympics taught me the importance of mental strength and I learnt that you should only focus on things that are within your control. To all the athletes who aren’t racing this year because of Covid-19, use this situation as an opportunity to fine tune one of the most important aspects of your racing strategy - your mental preparation.
