He demands such a small price for a precious thing) Anarkali Bazaar in Lahore, one of the most distinct and popular locations in the city with its bustling streets, mouth-watering food, and exquisite and diverse shops, is often fondly remembered by numerous Partition Survivors. Reminiscing the carefree and precious weekends spent with their family and friends at the bazaar, many recall the famous shops and streets of the time. One such shop that is frequently mentioned by former residents of Lahore (now in Pakistan) is the Bhalla Shoe Company or Bhallay di Hatti. The shoe company was started by Dhani Ram Bhalla, a trader and a well-known social figure in pre-Partition Lahore. Belonging originally to Bajwara in district Hoshiarpur, Dhani Ram initially came to Lahore to start a leather business, which he converted later into the Bhalla Shoe Company. Slogans such as Boot Bhalley de laidiyo sanoo, roz diyarhi, kavan tuhanoo (Buy me Bhalla’s shoes, I request you every day) came up to publicise the store and in no time, Bhalley di Hatti became a leading shoe store in the city. In his book Lahore - A Sentimental Journey Pran Nevile speaks about his first few memories of Lahore, which includes one of Bhalla Shoe Co. when the city was visited by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1929. Pran describes the procession of the newly elected president of the Congress who was showered with rose petals through his journey and came to a stop in front of Bhalla Shoe Co. where he was garlanded by its owner Dhani Ram Bhalla. Various other political leaders and scholars of the time such as Rabindranath Tagore also visited Dhani Ram and his store during their visits to Lahore. However, at the time of Partition, when violence spread all over the city, Dhani Ram Bhalla and his family were forced to leave their precious shoe store and beloved Lahore and migrate to India. This pic was pretty much our first impression about Tokyo when we arrived here last Sunday😳😊 Tokio is such an impressive and special city, so modern and fancy but at the same time there is still so much to see from their cultural heritage and history.. it’s really a one of a kind city and we absolutely love it 💕. . . In case you consider to travel to Tokyo: public transportation is very easy to navigate but read about the different lines upfront or get a good guide. We love the Yamamote Line BUT it’s a pain during rush hour. Sometimes when you take a big leap forward, you will hit a couple of snags. We felt this last night when a three-alarm fire hit our store and severely damaged inventory that we were going to move to our new location. We were one of three victims in the Grand Street fire and came out with Extensive inventory loss. Initial estimates puts the amount at $60K. We incurred more than just financial losses though. We had teas and antiques dating more than 30 years old. And treasures that our family collected from all parts of China for years are no longer replaceable. We are incredibly grateful that in the aftermath of this event, we have been supported by friends and family from all corners. Though times have been tough, we are inspired by everyone’s support to keep rallying. We will survive this and we will be open again soon. @sendchinatownlove has set up a fundraiser page for our fire recovery (link in bio). This image belongs to one of the chapters of the series (2015-2016), which serves as witness to a rediscovering of my family and friends, as well as an observation of the landscape of my hometown, Havana. Conformed by multiple chapters and themes, Self-Epitaph is intended to be a lifetime project. Hi guys! I collaborated with @archivision.studio for the realization of this #render: a scene inspired by the suburbs of #HongKong. Real anthill houses: spaces so small in which people are forced to live because of the very high prices that have reached the rents of the city. In this work I have focused a lot on creating a cold atmosphere, in contrast to the warmth of the lantern light. The gloomy atmosphere, given by the cold concrete, by the proximity of the architecture, by the dense shadows, opposed to the warmth of the human presence: a resilient vitality told by the light of the lamps. Hong Kong 🇭🇰 Neon Lights I - no I’m not in Hong Kong at the Moment. I haven’t been traveling since early February and I miss it dearly. I miss my trips, my photography when I’m not at home. My feed has become so mono thematic and while it has grown my account, it taught me a lot of new lessons as well. Still, it’s not what I had intended for my feed. I love working with beautiful women and I love the content I create - but it repeats itself. 消失的永夜之城｜「三不管」的九龍寨城 九龍寨城曾見證香港過百年歷史發展，期間被稱為「三不管」地區，然而隨着清拆工程，九龍寨城現已不復存在，成為一段逐漸被遺忘的香港回憶。這座永夜之城，故名思義，位於英殖香港的九龍城區。回顧在1898年簽署的《中英展拓香港界址專條》中，大英帝國讓滿清政府繼續駐兵管轄九龍城寨，有着今天領事館的地位，亦是當時清朝官員辦公之地。 所謂的「三不管」，其實意指中國不管、英國不管、香港不管。九龍寨城之所以被賦予這個特殊稱號，是由於二戰結束後大量露宿者開始在城寨聚居，後來的國共內戰亦導致大批難民湧入城寨，導致城寨人口急劇上升。受制於先前簽訂的中英條約條款，當時的港英政府和皇家香港警察因而無權踏足城寨半步，而新中國政府拒絕管理城寨事務，最終使逐漸成為三不管的罪惡溫床。 當時三不管的九龍寨城，絕對是一處藏污納垢之地，圍城內妓院、賭場、鴉片煙館無一不缺，黃賭毒更是猖獗一時，是大毒梟的最佳藏身之處。此外，非法衞生情況極之嚴重，當中有不少未經註冊的非法診所，吸引許多未成年少女前去進行非法墮胎。在七八十年代，多部電視均以九龍寨城這個惡名昭彰的罪惡之都作為題材，例如麥當雄的《省港旗兵》、杜琪峰的《龍城歲月》、錢小豪的《城寨出來者》等著名經典港產片。 隨着時代的推進與變遷，九龍寨城終在1993年遭夷為平地。現在我們所看見的九龍城寨公園，地址正正是城寨的前身。無庸置疑，城寨予人感覺一般，是黑暗、色情、暴力、血腥、罪惡。然而九龍城寨這座大型老舊圍城，見證香港百年歷史，城寨的清拆同時象徵時代的進步。縱然九龍寨城已經徹底消失在香港的地圖上，然而它為我們帶來的種種記憶和歷史，每位香港人都應該牢牢謹記在心中。 Follow us @ellemenhk #ellemenhk #ellemendailyglow #kowloonwalledcity #hongkong #kowloon #colony #darkness #brutality #evil #sin #drug #dirty #dangerous #britishempire #chineseempire #三不管 #九龍寨城 #九龍城寨公園 #圍城 #港產片 #省港旗兵 #龍城歲月 #城寨出來者 #永夜之城 - @ellemenhk on Instagram
