🇧🇷Thiago Lopez is an anaesthesiologist and photographer based in Rio de Janeiro. 🇧🇷 His photos of his travels have gained him hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers but this week he’s kindly agreed to share some of his favourite photos of his home city with us, as part of our #portraitofmycity series, where photographers around the world shed light on their craft as well as the sacred, inspiring and beautiful places where they live and work. Thiago sent us this photo to represent the most inspiring place in his city. He says: “Recognised a few years ago as a UNESCO world heritage site, Ilha Grande is a few hours drive from the city of Rio de Janeiro and is considered one of the largest reserves of the Atlantic Forest - a tropical forest biome characteristic of our region that has suffered over the years from deforestation. This is one of the few places in Rio de Janeiro that still has its preserved native reserve and its beauty and biodiversity, which includes species that exist only in this region. One morning, when I was six years old, I was waiting for my mother to bring the milk. Every morning she would collect fresh milk from the farm for us to drink with our chai, but that morning it didnt come. Everyone was moving around me, shouting orders and directions, collecting belongings from around the houses. We had to leave. And just like that, without our morning milk, our family become displaced. Soon after we fled Sri Lanka. It’s been a long journey, but now I have asylum in Australia. I miss many things about home.
