It was about 10pm and I had just had dinner with Collin Thomas, who would also be killed two years later, when my phone rang with a satellite number I knew to have originated in Afghanistan. I was told Dusty was gone that night, and the news was crushing. He was a remarkable person, and he could make anyone laugh. I quickly grabbed my stuff from the hotel room in Arlington and drove back to Virginia Beach, only to get on a plane bound for Dustys home town in Michigan. I was one of the ones who stood in front of Dustys parents that next morning, in uniform. To say it was heartbreaking is an understatement, as so many of us know who have had to do this. Only a few weeks after Dustys passing, Cindy died too, she couldnt take the tragic loss. They were buried side-by-side in 2008, where they now rest. The sacrifices are real, and the people weve lost were extraordinary.
