I usually take #fathersday as a day of silent reflection, but some mix of the lingering isolation from shelter in place orders and the pain of thinking about the children of George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks, and of course the countless others whose fathers were taken early and unjustly, made me want to post a couple flicks of the late #king Uncle Love Biscuits aka U Dubs finest aka Big # 90 -- the banks were too big to fail and you were too big for chairs w/o sturdy nails 😂😂😂. Jokes aside, I was blessed to have him at my high school graduation. A lot of folks round me didnt even have that. As my sisters gotten older (pictured above when still sweet) weve done a better job keeping him alive in memory. He was flawed and complex and at times unbearably stoic, but he had a BIG heart and easy wisdom and a sense of humor that transcended a lot of the rifts in our society. I am deeply thinking about all the folks we did not get to see this season. The volume of that void is real. Some of our most beloved friends have been unable to make it to the island this summer - we have held them in our hearts. Now, we are grieving during this time of disruption- when we lose someone during Covid we cannot gather and have a wake or a funeral. That makes for a higher level of disconnect in an already awful time. So I am writing to process- Every night we run thru the guests joining us for the evening with our team during preshift meeting- when we opened 29 years ago we consciously decided to use the term PPX instead of VIP - the term came from my internship in Provence “PPX,” personne particulierement extraordinaire, PPX served two purposes to let the team know someone who was extra magical was joining us and if someone looked at the book they would not know what the term meant. The presence of a PPX guest elevated the evening - each year I would try to explain the difference in clearer terms. It had nothing to do with the money guests spent - the true value was the relationship and connection to our style of hospitality. PPX guests are simply our people, they know us, we know them, we become family and the restaurant is a home for them. A haven they think about when we are not together - the Folks in this photo are my people - the hardest part isI have not seen any of these folks in person since this time of times began. No hugs, no distanced connection. I have seen them virtually and that has brought me great joy. Now our collective hearts ache with the news of the departure of Steve Mantelli from this realm on earth.. Steve was from another time and I looked forward to seeing him each holiday weekend and when he would come down during the summer with this amazing group. Cheers to a life full of so much LOVE, laughter - your giggle, your radio voice and the twinkle in your eyes will glow forever.. BLESSED One of the biggest changes I’ve made to my routine is learning how to be in the present moment and to truly appreciate how blessed I am. The couple on the left recently sold a profitable bakery in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. When I am considering the 27,000 dentists in California my significance is almost nothing. But to the CDA I am everything. The value the organization holds of each of the members from what I have seen is above even the interests of the CDA. It is sacrifice that makes us great. And the sacrifice that people give to ensure that we are a thriving community. This past few days I was at the annual House of Delegates meeting where we once again debated and discussed and voted on issues, this time the organization structure, Medicare, Tobacco and Nicotine product policies, dentists involvement in sleep disorder treatment and CDA run businesses; TDIC and TDSC. This is my final time at the house but I am leaving behind this great team of colleagues that I want to discuss who are with me in this first picture on my immediate right @bebrannon someone who was very open and welcoming with me when I first joined, always ready to be involved and someone who seeks to understand beyond the superficial level of what’s going on. @arianana6 is next to her who has been enthusiastic at CDA, very personable and has a really calm confidence. I haven’t seen a D1 engage with some of the most senior people in dentistry so well before her. Then we have Nisha @nishers95 who is wise beyond her years, super dependable and one of the most capable people I have met at UCLA. Last but not least; @daniel.krukl who I feel was born for the role in how he engages and networks with so many people and he has shown a strong desire to make a difference to help others. I have never felt like a senior in the group with them because they are all so great. Special mention to Michelle Piasecki who was missed and has always been a great support to me. William Ivey Long, the most powerful costume designer in Broadway today, is a known sexual assaulter and harasser. He has been for decades and people have KNOWN for decades. If you’ve never heard his name, theatre lovers will know his designs for the OBC of Cinderella, Hairspray, Producers, Seussical, Nine, Young Frankenstein, Crazy For You, Grey Gardens, Beetlejuice, Big Fish, 9 to 5, Curtains, Boy from Oz... 79 Broadway shows and revivals. An extreme example of an unchecked gate keeper. Think of the thousands of less privileged, newcomer, and BIPOC designers he was chosen over because he is a “safe bet”. Safe for who? Not the actors and crew. Safe for the producers. This yet another example of why we need to amplify young, femme and BIPOC voices and artists. When I think of how many of his costumes I’ve idolized, replicated myself, or been put in, I’m sick. You’ll never see that from me again. My brother just reminded me that it was 10 years to the day since my season 1 bake off win was broadcast, and what a wild 10 years it’s been! As every ‘where are they now’ piece likes to point out, Bake Off was far from the runaway success it is now, there was far fewer viewers, less media interest and I had no idea what life post the show would be. Through determination and a lot of very hard work I’m so very proud of what I’ve achieved over these past 10 years, all I ever wanted to do was encourage people, to help them bake and enjoy this thing I’m so passionate about. Memories bring back memories bring back you. My Grammy passed away this past weekend at age 86. She lived a good life. Raised a great family. And she got to see her family grow and build their own families. She was a huge part of my childhood. A majority of my memories as a kid took place at Grammy’s house. The great thing about good memories is they last forever while freezing the feeling of the moment as if it is recent. . This is why I feel it is so important to live each day to the fullest, make good memories and don’t let fear hold you back from having a great life. And TAKE PHOTOS of things worth remembering, because one day the photos (even if the little, simple things) will mean even more than they do at the time. . Tonight, friends and family will join together to remember her life. And tomorrow we will lay her to rest next to my Papa. . I imagine them together with this same feeling this photo of her experiencing the beach for the first and only time in her life 8 years ago... it was a beautiful day of pure peace and joy! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the hardworking, inspirational moms out there. The best advice that I received from my mother is find a career that you love, because you will likely spend most of your time doing it. My mom grew up in time where women could only be secretaries, nurses or teachers. She hated being a secretary and knew that I would have many more opportunities than she did. Im glad that I followed her advice, because I love practicing dermatology. I give my kids the same advice, to find a career that they will love doing everyday.
