I would like to invite you as an Oregon artist to contribute a visual or written piece of art to be part of the altar. It might be something you have already created or written. Or you might create an offering that is inspired by this poem or by how you have experienced the devastation of the Oregon fires. People who visit the gallery will have an opportunity to write their thoughts and feelings on small pieces of paper and hang them on the wall amongst the artists’ offerings. I am accepting 50 pieces. [9-12-2020. The Samuelsons 200 acre timber farm lies at the edge of the Beachie Creek Fire, outside of Mahema, Ore. They have been fighting the fires since September 8th. Lee, along his wife Kristine, his son, daughter, brother, son-in-law and even his 70-year old dad had fought with shovels and buckets—without the assistance of wildland firefighters. Fortunately, their home was spared from the blaze, but nearly three quarters of the property had been torched by fires. Just to give you all perspective on what it’s like to drive through the Willamette Valley growing area RIGHT NOW, these videos were taken between 9:15-10am on my way to Portland from @walterscottwines (sunrise was 6:45am). They show the dramatic shift from the shroud of a Satanic smoke cloud to clear blue skies. . As power finally came on yesterday, I was able to get enough charge on my electric car to make it to the next station this morning; unfortunately through the 5th circle of hell that many winemakers are harvesting in currently. . This is just too dystopian for words. As you watch the horizon line in these videos, and the light at the end of the tunnel grows, let that imagery mirror our resolve to do better for this planet. Mnohí ľudia musia opúšťať svoje obydlia, aby sa dostali do bezpečnej zóny. V Colorade zúria lesné požiare už vyšše mesiace, je zasiahnutého už vyše 56 000 hektárov územia. Lesný požiar vznikol aj v štáte Washington, mesto Olympia je zahalené hustým dymom. Aj v štáte Oregon je zaznamenaných veľa požiarov, bolo zničených už viac ako 100 budov a mnohí obyvatelia museli byť evakuovaní. Situácia sa vymyká spod kontroly aj v Kalifornii. Vyše 100 000 hektárov územia zachvátili plamene. Na väčšine územia štátu sa nachádza hustý dymový pás. Z chráneného územia Sierra National Forest muselo byť evakuovaných 150 ľudí. ⠀ 🇪🇸ŠPANIELSKO - Vyše 3000 ľudí v Andalúzií bolo evakuovaných kvôli lesným požiarom. Do boja proti ohňu, ktorý sa vznietil 10. septembra pri meste Almonaster la Real, bolo povolaných až 500 hasičov. ⠀ 🇬🇷GRÉCKO - 9. septembra vznikol požiar, ktorý sa považuje za najväčší zo 70 požiarov, ktoré vznikli v Grécku od 8. septembra. 30. augusta vznikli požiare na polostrove Peloponéz. Požiare ohrozili cenné archeologické pamiatky, ktoré sa nachádzajú v meste Mykény. Našťastie, vďaka práci hasičov, sa všetky exponáty podarilo zachrániť. ⠀ 🇮🇹TALIANSKO - 31. augusta vznikol požiar na ostrove Lipari. Oheň zničil veľké množstvo rastlín, stáročné stromy a úrodu miestnych obyvateľov. ⠀ 🇷🇺RUSKO - 2. septembra došlo k rozľahlým plameňom v Rostovskej oblasti. Ohňom bola zasiahnutá plocha o veľkosti 700 hektárov. Došlo k úmrtiam. ⠀ 📌Oheň je rýchly a dokáže napáchať veľké škody. The most dramatic way to fight a fire is from the sky. An air tanker may fly about 150 feet off the ground at 161 miles per hour and can paint up to a mile-long line of retardant on the ground. A big helicopter could dump as much as 2,000 gallons of water to try to save a house. And smokejumpers fling themselves from airplanes 3,000 feet above their landing area below to snuff out a small fire in a remote area before it gets bigger. As California battles another wave of historically enormous blazes, the state is using aircraft to combat the huge conflagrations. As of last week, aerial assets in California had dropped 3.35 million gallons of fire retardant and 4.69 million gallons of water to battle fires covering more than 1.25 million acres. California has both its own fleet and can employ contractors to mount full-court presses on fires, but the aerial approach is certainly not limited to combating burns in the Golden State. And the process is more complicated than simply dumping water on flames. Australia is currently on fire and nobody seems to care. These are the effects of climate change in action - right here, right now. We are getting no help from international aid. Hell, we aren’t even making international news. Bushfires are destroying communities and ecosystems at a rate which has gone far beyond alarming, taking wildlife and fauna along with it. We have lost 950,000 hectares of bush and nobody is doing anything. That’s more than the damage caused by the Amazon bushfires - and it will only get worse from here. Even the PRIME MINISTER couldn’t give less of a shit unless the bushfires get to one of his precious coal mines. Until then all he is willing to do is hand out thoughts and prayers like a lady at the school office handing you a uniform slip for having a tick on your socks. In 2019 our 43 #SSI #SAR volunteers responded to 15 taskings. These included searches, medical rescues and Mutual Aid support to assist our #VanIsle Search & Rescue colleagues. Training on everything from Ground Search & Rescue techniques, to specialty skills such as Tracking, High Angle Rope Rescue, Advanced Medical, keep us busy all year long. Our #AdventureSmart presenters did 8 Hug a tree presentations to our local elementary schools, helping to promote SAR #prevention to our younger generation. In total over 6,700 volunteer hours were contributed by operational and support team members to training sessions, SAR incidents, public events and all that goes into keeping our team ready to respond. This shot was taken in Yokohl Valley facing Springville CA. The #sqfcomplex Fire has been burning for a while now and the locals are starting to see the fire from their homes. The smoke has been very heavy and with plenty of fuels, the fires continue to burn with intensity. As a wildland fire fighter I understand whats going on but as a local I also feel the pain. Springville is a small community and they are very welcoming. Many of the local residents love their mountain community. Also the cities nearby all like to visit this area and frequent for many activities. I have grown up spending many summers here and enjoying the winter scapes. This area was very dark and you could barely see any activity due to heavy smoke. I took a shot of a small tree on fire and my camera captured this view. What my eyes seen we far from this. I wanted to share this so that everyone can see what this small town is dealing with. This area isnt getting as much media coverage. The state needs to allow logging to reduce the amount of dead trees in the forests. As we all know, forest fires are an essential part of healthy forests but there is a point where those fires become destructive beyond management and for the wildlife as well. Many fires have their purpose and are left to burn with boots on the ground to manage. As a wildland firefighter myself I know how important fires are. The controlled burn in the Packard Tract in Essa Township is underway. While controlled burns differ from wildfires, in that they are managed to control smoke exposures to the public and are of much shorter overall durations than forest fires, concerns can arise regarding smoke exposure and health. Smoke exposure may pose a risk for more vulnerable individuals such as children, elderly and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Today, #FireChief, Dominique Artis, and members of his Command Staff, recognized #firefighters/#paramedics from @dallasfirerescue #Station36 and @dallasfirestation26 for their quick actions which resulted in a citizen, who walked into the station for a experiencing #chestpain, being taken to the hospital for a life-saving cardiac intervention. Due to the quick actions of the crew of #Engine36, and the expert medical care of the members on #Rescue26, the patient arrived at the hospital in time to receive a #cardiac stent and stabilize their critical condition. There are currently 85 large uncontained wildfires burning throughout the west. In our backyard the Bridger Foothills Fire has burned over 8,000 acres and homes of friends and neighbors, coming within several feet of Beringia HQ. We wanted to share some words from a fellow Rebel on the West Coast: This is not an apocalypse movie. There would be a better soundtrack. This is a long, slow descent into insanity, a disaster that is achingly, intimately normal. This is my life. Waking up. Going to work. Eating dinner. Ash. Fire. Catastrophe. At approximately 4:00 pm this afternoon, the Gainesville Fire Department received a call in reference to a residential fire. Initial reports believed that two people and several kittens may be in the home. While making the initial fire attack, firefighters located four kittens. After the fire was extinguished, three additional kittens were located. The home suffered serious damage from the fire, smoke, and water damage. Great job locating the kittens!! Well, it’s been a day... Yesterday brought heavy winds of up to 50 mph, bringing with it downed hop vines and smoke and making the farm look like something out of a Mad Max film. Due to safety concerns, field work was shut down for several hours. Thankfully no one was hurt and everyone is safe. Today we assessed all fields and surveyed the damage. No fields blew down, but we saw a fair amount of downed vines. Labor was redistributed to salvage what we can. The weekend was unbearable on the West Coast. For those who were lucky (like my family), the worst of it was the oppressive and toxic smoke that turned the skies dark and kept us trapped indoors. Portland has had the worst air in the world for several days. Imagine that. For many others, it was much, much worse. Homes destroyed, pets lost, friends missing and family members killed by devastating wildfires. Like Wyatt Tofte, a 13-year-old found dead with his dog on his lap, along with his grandma. They died trying to escape the fires. As a native Oregonian and career journalist, I have the historical perspective to tell you that this is not normal. Hurricane force winds blew in, making abnormally dry forests ripe for fire. These fires weren’t just in remote forests, but close to heavily populated urban areas. So many farming and teaching friends have been evacuated or have been ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Homes, businesses, and farms have perished. City Health Officer Anissa Davis warns Long Beach residents about potential unhealthy air quality due to two major wildfires in the Southern California region, the Bobcat Fire and the El Dorado Fire, which are producing heavy smoke. Smoke and ash rising into the atmosphere may be visible over portions of Long Beach and surrounding areas, potentially creating unhealthy conditions. All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in any area directly impacted by smoke and ash. This includes areas where residents can see or smell smoke. In any area impacted by smoke, residents should take the following precautions: Avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. Remain indoors, especially for individuals with respiratory or heart disease, pregnant women, older adults and children. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Change the standard air-conditioner filter to a medium or high efficiency filter. If you have a wall-unit or window-unit air conditioner, set it to “re-circulate.” Avoid the use of a swamp cooler or whole-house fan to prevent bringing additional smoke inside, if possible. Ongoing California Wildfires Causing Very Unhealthy Air Quality - District cautions Valley residents of increasing health impacts Ongoing multiple wildfires across California and surrounding the Valley are continuing to cause smoke impacts to all counties of the Valley air basin. It’s a very difficult time for so many right now and we’re so sad to see the devastation being caused by multiple wildfires across our state. USFS temporarily closed 8 Forest Districts as of today, which included the Cleveland National Forest, Mt. Laguna Recreation Area. Although the Mt. Laguna region is currently not under any direct fire threat, all of USFS personal and resources are being re-directed towards managing this unprecedented fire. Santa Ana winds are expected tomorrow, which could further exacerbate an already volatile situation. We ask that you please refrain from visiting these areas and abide by the closure until further notice. We’ve been told that the closure will last for one week from today, but could be extended if conditions worsen. We will keep you posted as the situation develops. SEARS FIRE UPDATE • B825 and crew are still assigned to the Sears fire and have been working hard the last few days. The crew assisted with burn out operations and then transitioned into holding active fire line from jumping a road. Seen here are the KMAX helicopter and a LAT working to put out active fire line and contain spot fires. Oregon is on fire and it was a week without power (or phone service). It’s hard to breathe, my eyes burn, the trails are closed, and I had to cut out of a 7 backpacking trip. It sucks. But, my house is still here and I am going to be ok. It’s easy to get perspective when thinking about and seeing the many small business owners, farms, fire fighters, wildlife, and families right now around here locally and all over the west. Early this morning, Orange County sent out additional resources for mutual aid assistance up north. A part of this recent deployment, Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue has deployed our Engine 82 as part of Strike Team 1422A with four firefighters to the Lightning Complex Fire in Napa County. Additionally, CMFR’s OES Engine 415 firefighters continue to work the Carmel Fire with four firefighters and are staying in high spirits. 5 years ago today I was released from UCSD hospital after the removal of a grapefruit sized mesothelioma cancer tumor. Sternum cut in half like open heart surgery. The day before the big surgery a microscopic surgery through my arm to my chest was preformed to cinch off a couple main arteries that the tumor had vigorously wrapped around, causing concern of the possibility of bleeding out during the big surgery. Not making it through was never an option but it lingers in your mind, especially with young kids. We had JUST started our farm and I had also just had a “triple hemorrhoidectomy”, (not just one🤣), so shame and embarrassment has fully been thrown out the door. 5 years ago I somehow got in my car and rode home, and promised myself to give more, to live life now! Cause your not promised tomorrow. And on the day of remembering 9/11 also, ironically, we must all remember what is truly important and just give thanks. I thank everyone, family, friends, chefs, strangers whoever, that have helped me along the way. I’m a walking miracle and therefor I’ll help anyone. Do yourself a favor and go get checked, spend the money, it may save your life, but then go out and enjoy the simple things. Big thanks to Dr. Thistlewaite (head of thoracic department) and the staff at @ucsdhealth, they saved my life, and because of them I can be a farmer. I look at my 9 inch scar on my chest everyday, every single damn day, and am reminded how lucky I am to just be alive. Please do the same. At high noon on Wednesday, Sept. 9, the skies to the west of Highway 101 in Monterey County were dark, filled with smoke from the growing Dolan Fire. The smell of active fire got stronger further south, near Fort Hunter Liggett. A few miles past the military base, up Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, firefighters appeared over a hill, silhouetted by an orange glow following steadily behind. They were performing a controlled burn on the southeastern edge of the fire to gain control while the weather worked in their favor with winds that were nearly non-existent and high relative humidity. As of Friday, Sept. 11, the fire has burned 113,486 acres, is 26-percent contained. It has destroyed 14 structures, including the U.S. Forest Service station on top of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. We co-own @thebroomsmen and a sister company @tripleflare With the lack of a full event schedule and the crazy amount of fires this season, we’ve been out in the field assisting on wildland fire camps for the past month with @tripleflare in Arizona, California and Oregon. Our team sets up on basecamps and manages recycling and sanitation for the incident. It’s rewarding doing our small part to help with basecamps for the teams fighting these fires. Fire camps and weddings have some similarities! Groups of people coming together for a common purpose with lots of moving pieces. Fire crews raced Monday afternoon to try to save Meadowood Napa Valley as the Glass Fire threatened to burn the highly-rated luxury resort that housed the famed, three-Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood. Firefighters from Mexico continue to lend a hand to suppression efforts on the #SQFComplex, U.S. Forest Service - Sequoia National Forest. The five crews and overhead personnel are from Guadalajara, Mexico. They arrived in California on Sept. 23, and after two days of orientation and refresher training, reported for assignment on the Sequoia Complex. The five hand crews were deployed immediately to the lines of the complex to join the effort to establish and improve perimeter control lines. The Sequoia Complex fires are burning on the U.S. Forest Service - Sequoia National Forest and U.S. Forest Service - Inyo National Forest, as well as state and private land. Our beloved Wine Country is, once again, rocked to its core. The current fires are by far the most destructive we have ever seen and they have taken what is, for me as vintner who arrived here 37 years ago, what I consider to be the “heart” of our vintners’ community: Meadowood. This property is where it all started for us vintners; our first offices, our monthly luncheons where we developed camaraderie, and the friendship that serves as the foundation of today’s resiliency. It is also the location of the annual Auction Napa Valley. Additionally, these fires have destroyed wineries like never before, and the harvest of 2020 is practically nonexistent. Plus, let’s face it...after COVID’s catastrophic impact on Napa’s tourism, we did not need this. BUT! We are keeping the morale high, the generosity is overwhelming, the solidarity exemplary, and the resilience at its highest EVER. You, my friends, are also fantastic. Your calls, messages, and emails flow endlessly to tell and show us of your love and support. We at VGS are so lucky to count you as our biggest fans. On missions like this our crews attach a piece of equipment called a Bambi Bucket to the cargo hook on the bottom of one of our #AW139 helicopters. These buckets hold over 1,200 litres of water, which is normally picked up from a nearby lake or river and continuously dropped on the fire. I live about two miles from the Bobcat Fire and this has been my view from my front yard for the past few days. Everyday feels so surreal. The skies are orange, there’s ash falling from the sky, and did I mention the inside of your home smells like constant smoke. But all in all, so grateful to all the firefighters who are at it all day and night trying to control the flames and protect lives and homes. They deserve all the recognition in the world. Also, some people might not like this but if you have a drone, please do not come and try to get shots. You are making it difficult for firefighters to do their jobs. Members of the fire department have been going through extensive training with the Orange County Fire Authority to prepare for the transition of fire department services next week on August 16 at 8:00 a.m. In addition, staff from both Garden Grove and the OCFA have put in a great deal of effort to ensure a seamless transition. One significant change that will be seen immediately is the 40% increase in paramedic staffing. Each fire apparatus will have four firefighters on board, with two functioning as paramedics also.
