Surprise visit from the legendary pinstriping artist Dennis Ricklefs this evening. I met Dennis years ago when he pinstriped my 59 Cadillac. We spent 2 days at my shop eating pizza and drinking root beers while listening to story after story of his life and art. He started pin striping when he was 15/16 years old and at 77 is still knocking them out. Tonight he showed up with this beautiful piece commemorating my company @galindoglass 15 year anniversary. When he was a kid, @jacob_soderqvist ‘s brother shot him through the eye with an arrow that somehow didn’t kill him. But Jacob wasn’t going to let a little incident like that get in the way of his dreams and went on to become a professional snowboarder with just one eye. I had the pleasure of laughing and snowboarding with Jacob in some unreal places in the mid nineties and one night in May at around one in the morning we were riding just north of the arctic circle in Norway when I snapped this one of him as the sun was setting over the Atlantic/Herjangsfjorden. What’s special about this cover for me is that it ran without the usual words and blurbs that try to sell you the magazine. It was a quarter century ago and I thought I remembered it being someone else’s idea but @gcharlie , the photo editor from back then insists the idea was mine and that I demanded the photo to run naked or to send it back. Either way it was an honor to be a senior photographer for @snowboardermag back then and it was the first snowboard magazine cover of its kind. SOMEWHERE YOU RODE THIS YEAR WILL BE CLOSED NEXT SEASON. In the Stanislaus, it will be the north side of Sonora Pass or Tryon Peak. In the Plumas or Eldorado National Forests it will involve absurd closures around a summer hiking trail. In the Tahoe National Forest it will be the entire ridge from Tinkers Knob to Anderson Peak. We know the world is a little crazy right now but these closures will be a reality next riding season. The Sierra Snowmobile Foundation will be fighting these closures where it counts: In court. But unfortunately we cant do it without money. Our Skidoo Raffle is to fund court costs, nothing else. We NEED to sell tickets to accomplish this, and weve extended the raffle to April 17 to reach our goal. With sales limited to 300 tickets, you have probably the best odds of any raffle youve entered.
