Strength training for runners ๐ . Strength training is often overlooked in the running community. Many runners I come into contact with like you focus on running, and maybe some stretching and recovery in the hopes they can run more. What they often miss is how much they could benefit from some specific strength training. . Strength is an essential element of running. Some form of strength training routine can greatly improve a runners resilience, endurance, and even mechanics over time. . โ Closed chain single leg strength: . โข Closed chain means that the foot is in contact with the ground when doing the exercise. โข Running requires a great deal of closed chain strength and control, as it is basically a series of single leg hops. โข Closed chain single leg exercises will directly improve hip strength and control, which is needed while running to maintain integrity and stability through the kinetic chain. . This includes exercises such as: โข Lunges โข Split squats/Rear foot elevated split squats โข Single leg squats โข Single leg deadlifts โข Step ups/step downs โข Etc. . 1๏ธโฃ Develop competence doing some of these exercises (they can be difficult and demand a lot of control). 2๏ธโฃ Load them up. Train for connection โ๏ธ . Human movement is complex. Most natural human movement involves the interplay of a variety of muscles working together to produce the desired patterns of movement. . ๐ SLINGS: These refer to a series of muscles in the front and back of body that work together to transfer load efficiently in order to produce and coordinate movements. . The slings are involved in gait, running, throwing, punching, rotational movements, and many dynamic movements that show up in sports. โ They are responsible for the connection and coordination between the upper and lower body through the midsection. . Ie. A boxer with punching power gets it from the coordinated action of upper body, core, and lower body. When a punch is sequenced correctly and timed right, the entire body is at work. This is where power comes from, the connection between upper and lower body (the sling systems). . ๐ You can start training for better connection and stimulating/strengthening your slings. As this connection improves, you will notice how it shows up in a variety of movements and sports. . โข Start by training movements as opposed to muscles. โข Train rotational movements, this is where the slings are at work most. . SUPER QUICK ๐ PUMP If you struggle with feeling your glutes activate during glute exercises you should try these! You can do these floors exercises anywhere and on any muscle group day! I like to incorporate 1-3 glute activating exercises everyday I am training (sometimes on an off day as well ๐). I find that my engagement during intense glutes only sessions are SO much greater! . . ๐Banded Hip Raise Abductions My bottom hip raises up off the floor while my top knee abducts. I have my hand on my hip but as I fatigue I like to place my hand down on the floor ๐ฅต. If this is too challenging for your medius muscle you can eliminate the band above your knees. ๐Banded Side Lying Straight Leg Kickbacks You can band above or below your knee, I chose below. Lift your working leg off the floor while swinging it from front to back. You should feel a nice little stretch/extension of your hip ๐ค. Hey ๐๐ป there booty dimple ๐๐ ๐Banded Floor Clamshells My feet are stacked and knees are bent. Imagine opening and closing your legs like a clamshell ๐ . I coach this with your feet resting on the floor and also with your feet elevated off the floor (try both ๐๐ป). ๐Pigeon Pose Glute Pulses I have been doing this exercise for years. Mostly during my yoga flow sessions or at home when my little guy ๐ถ๐ผ is independently playing on the floor ๐๐ป. This looks easy but you may change your mind after you try it! ๐ฅต ๐๐ .
