⚡️🔊🎶A—-Z world building w/ @dave_charlesworth’s new card game /// this time in space 🪐✨💫 The Video: ‘Lethe’ was made following our session & will be showing at @southkiosk from Thursday 1st Oct //// South Kiosk is pleased to present “A hand is dealt”, a project based on a collaborative world building card game created by Dave Charlesworth. From 1st-18th of October Dave will be hosting pre-booked, socially distanced sessions of the game from specifically created sets within the gallery. The visitor will become a performer and author within the space, forming improvised world building narratives with the support of Dave who will work as the deck’s archivist and provide interpretation of the drawn cards. With the agreement of the participants, some of these sessions will be developed as online streams available to watch on South Kiosk’s Instagram Live and Twitch. The gallery will also be open on Sundays throughout the project for pre-booked socially distanced viewing visits, where visitors can see the sets, find out more about the game, and see responses to game sessions by Anne Duffau(A---Z), Linda Persson, Ibrahim Azab, and Serena Korda. Additionally, remote, online sessions of the game can be scheduled throughout the duration of the project. “A hand is dealt” is a generative game in which cards are drawn to push forward and alter the direction of the player driven spoken narrative. Each game is completed through the production of a new card, which is subsequently added to the deck. The game initially began with nine cards and now features twenty-three cards. Once the project is completed, new cards will be added which will be available to purchase as an edition. Game sessions and gallery visits can be booked at https://southkiosk.as.me (link in bio). All in person game sessions and gallery visits are limited to one person or household group per slot. “A hand is dealt” has been generously supported by Arts Council England’s Emergency Response Fund and features illustrations by Tom Gooch. #worldbuilding #improvisation #performanceart - @a___________________________z on Instagram

Hubble Spies Sparkling Galaxy As beautiful as the surrounding space may be, the sparkling galaxy in the foreground of this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope undeniably steals the show. This spotlight-hogging galaxy, seen set against a backdrop of more distant galaxies of all shapes and sizes, is known as PGC 29388. Although it dominates in this image, this galaxy is a small player on the cosmic stage and is known as a dwarf elliptical galaxy. As the dwarf moniker suggests, the galaxy is on the smaller side, and boasts a mere 100 million to a few billion stars — a very small number indeed when compared to the Milky Ways population of around 250 billion to 400 billion stellar residents. Neptune and Triton! 🔭🤩 Neptune hit opposition this week, and heres my latest image of the beautiful blue planet and its moon Triton. The skies were quite nice while I imaged this duo the other day, and luckily I caught this right before the fires went crazy and the skies clouded over. Heres a cool fact: Triton orbits Neptune backwards compared to the other bodies of our solar system. Most of the objects that orbit our star go in the same direction. And their moons also go in that same direction as well. However, there are exceptions, like Triton that go the other way. Orbits like this are suspected to have occurred when one body captures another as opposed to them coming into existence together. For this reason, it is suspected that Triton is an outsider to Neptune, and that the moon just got caught in Neptunes gravity as it passed by one day. Also, zoom in, and let me know your thoughts. Theres a tiny chance I pulled a little surface detail from the clouds, but Im guessing its just processing artifacts. I used this image in my larger solar system collage print recently too.

We usually post Mondays to give us a shot of hope during these trying times but weve been at a loss for words. Nothing has prepared us for whats unfolding before our eyes. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and we are trying to understand how to be allies rather than silently supporting a system which disproportionately oppresses people of color. These are challenging times in which two opposing views can be right in that violence is not the answer while peaceful protesting has not moved the needle enough for true social change. We dont have the answers but our hearts are broken by how division is being sown around the world. We encourage empathy, love, and care and look forward to a day where celebration seems appropriate. - @globaleclipsegathering on Instagram

How do you get electricity 250 miles above Earth? Sunlight! The 8 solar arrays installed on the #ISS convert solar energy to electrical power and often provide a beautiful addition to some amazing images of #Earth. #DYK: A solar arrays wingspan of 240 feet is longer than a Boeing 777s wingspan, which is 212 feet! There Are At Least 36 Intelligent Alien Civilizations In Our Galaxy, Say Scientists⁣ ⁣ Forbes just released an article explaining that the University of Nottingham took another step past the Drake Equation. Essentially they used what we know about life forming to make their own calculations on the probability of intelligent life. ⁣ ⁣ The Milky Way, home to our Solar System, is estimated to have 100 billion to 400 billion stars, and roughly one exoplanet per star in our galaxy. Using the theory that life is more likely to form on Earth-like planets... we are looking at a better chance of us not being alone in the universe. ⁣ ⁣ PC: @hubbleesa ⁣ Info: @forbes ⁣ ⁣ Follow @aspacestory for space inspiration and discovery! ⁣ ⁣ #aspacestory #alien #aliens #alienlife #intelligentlife #arewealone #arewealoneintheuniverse #wearenotalone #exoplanet #galaxy #milkywaygalaxy🌌 #milkywaygalaxy #universe #esa #hubbletelescope #forbes #science #space #astrophysics #drakeequation #theoreticalphysics - @aspacestory on Instagram

Signs of life on Venus? An international team of astronomers today announced the discovery of a rare molecule — phosphine — in the clouds of Venus. On Earth, this gas is only made industrially or by microbes that thrive in oxygen-free environments. Astronomers have speculated for decades that high clouds on Venus could offer a home for microbes — floating free of the scorching surface but needing to tolerate very high acidity. Confirming their discovery required using 45 antennas of the @alma.observatory in Chile, in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner. The international team, which includes researchers from the UK, US and Japan, estimates that phosphine exists in Venus’s clouds at a small concentration, only about twenty molecules in every billion. Following their observations, they ran calculations to see whether these amounts could come from natural non-biological processes on the planet. Some ideas included sunlight, minerals blown upwards from the surface, volcanoes, or lightning, but none of these could make anywhere near enough of it. These non-biological sources were found to make at most one ten thousandth of the amount of phosphine that the telescopes saw. The team believes their discovery is significant because they can rule out many alternative ways to make phosphine, but they acknowledge that confirming the presence of “life” needs a lot more work. Although the high clouds of Venus have temperatures up to a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius, they are incredibly acidic — around 90% sulphuric acid — posing major issues for any microbes trying to survive there. For more information check the link in bio. Image credit: @esoastronomy /M.
