Pour a cup, then hit the coast. Last weekend was spent learning Rhode Island’s tautog fishery from beneath the waves. It didn’t come easy, but we managed a few. Spearfishing seamlessly combines two of my deepest passions: hunting and fishing. It’s intimate, adrenaline pumping, and takes me out of my comfort zone every time. The selective nature of spearfishing also makes it an incredibly sustainable way to procure seafood. When fishing with a spear, by-catch is eliminated, and release mortality is nonexistent. But like most things, it isn’t without risk. 1/2 I started my masters in Biomimcry this fall. It’s been a field that I have found fascinating for nearly 4 years and honestly, it is what is slowly, one organism at a time, restoring my sanity. . It has taught me that I don’t have to do it all myself. That we don’t have to do this by ourselves. Biomimcry is coined as, “the conscious emulation of nature’s genius.” And what a genius she is… Between 30 - 100 million organisms that have survived and thrived for 3.8 billion years, all fitting in, not just fitting on. All communicating, and knowing when to switch their signal so that the “antenna” of the receiver can hear what the organism is trying to say. Egoless. Effective. . The reason I love this field, is that it asks for you to, “quiet your cleverness,” and no where else in entrepreneurship or thought leadership have I been asked to defer outside of my humanness. No where else have I been asked to have reverence to the things that inspire me, like the natural technology of dandelion seeds taking flight, or termite mounds cooling down (no AC), and vibrant color made with structure not toxic dyes. . What if we did get quiet…? What if we surrendered to her, accepting that she has the answers that we seek so desperately, and that we all need to become better students. Every day I get to learn about different organisms & the mechanisms of precision, the beauty and grace from which they accomplish their emergent cooperation on this planet. . The very nature around us has figured out optimal communication, zero waste, building for entropy, cooperation and community, structure, all with superior design principles than we will ever get to. She does everything we are doing, not only better, but with guaranteed success, after all she’s got a little time on us. ▲Grassi Lake Trail, Canmore, Alberta 10/10! We LOVED this trail, and in fact, it was our favourite hike of the trip! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The first thing you need to know is that you HAVE to take the more difficult route on your way up, if you are able. It was fantastic! The trail was steep and rugged, with incredible views and a beautiful waterfall! We would have missed SO MUCH beauty had we had taken the easy route! 🥾🏞️ We did enjoy the easy route for our walk down. I think the hard route would have been too difficult to go down with the dog and kids. The easy route is a wide gravel path through the woods. Its a great option for anyone who might have a more difficult time hiking up steep rocky paths on the harder route, but unfortunately the views on the way up consist primarily of forest! The Grassi Lakes and mountain views are well worth the hike, no matter which route you choose! The pictures speak for themselves! Look at that emerald green! We rely on our schools and support networks to take care of our kids while we do what we need to do to provide food, security, and socialise! Did you know that dolphins babysit for each other too? Male dolphins, like Mischief in the photo, oversee groups of juvenile dolphins and older brothers and sisters will take care of their siblings - we think this might be a way of teaching them to be parents 🐬 Baby dolphins have been seen interacting with other youngsters in ‘playpens’ created by a ring of protective adults. Amazingly, dolphins will even babysit dolphins of another species! Sierra High Route Day 1! We wake up early on our second day. Today we’ll officially be on the Sierra High Route!!! But first, we have 4 miles to hike to Roads End, the start of the Sierra High Route. I start off pretty strong, mostly because it’s all downhill or flat, and the motivation to poop in a hole I didn’t dig myself is very strong. And also I get to throw away my trash! Every ounce counts! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At Roads End, I look sadly at all my things. @halfwayanywhere takes mercy on me and grabs some of my things, making me a whole two pounds lighter. Ahead of us is a 5,000 foot slog up the Copper Creek trail, and the day is only getting warmer. We set off, leap frogging with some older gentlemen for the first couple miles. (This is important.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Halfway up the trail, I bonk super hard and we take a break. I fall asleep almost immediately on the trail. @halfwayanywhere gently shakes me awake and decides to take my bear can. There’s no arguing about this. I hand him my bear can in a fit of tears, frustrated that I am struggling so hard. We also swap cameras, since mine weighs twice as much and I’ve taken 0 photos today. He carries my bear can in his arms to the top of the Copper Creek trail, then off-trail to Grouse Lake, and then over Grouse Lake Pass to camp just beneath Goat Crest Saddle. We didn’t make it to our planned campsite at Glacier Lakes; I try not to get too down on myself. This walking thing is hard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My highlights of the day? Not getting passed by the two older gentlemen on the trail. (I take my wins where I can get them.) Wed like to send a big mahalo to John Enomoto at @gobananaskayaks for donating three retired kayaks to Mālama Maunalua to use to construct our Algae Vacuum (AlgaeVac). Without this generous donation from Go Bananas, the design and project would not have been possible. MM core volunteers Ralph Dykes and Leighton Taylor designed an apparatus to fit the two kayaks under a suspended platform in which to house the vacuum system and sorting containers. With the support of Lynker Technologies, our AlgaeVac team was able to remove over 11,746 lbs of invasive alien algae from Maunalua Bay over the course of 100 days. In each deepwater plot cleared, the team was able to decrease the percentile of invasive alien algae down to an average of 8.36% from plots initially within the 40-50 percentile range of invasive species coverage. Day 7: 24.5 km paddling 2km portaging. Everyone was excited for the day. Not only does this section of the Lady Evelyn River have runnable class I - II rapids, but also a series of scenic cascades. There are three stunning waterfalls in quick succession: Fat Man’s Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Cabin Falls. Making good time by running or lining most portages, we arrived to the falls before lunch. We had lots of time for lunch, breaks, and photo shoots. There was also plenty of time to take these portages slowly: incredibly steep and slippery from the mist! Starting cabin falls portage, Matt and Cam warned of a fallen tree on a steep decline along the portage, which significantly impeded portaging efforts last summer coming up this section of river. To our surprise and fortune, Hap Wilson (a famed author, conservationist and outdoorsman) had cut it down for us (see photo 8). Thanks @hapwilson1951 ! We completed the section in fast moving water while rain threatened above. Last weekend, our Volunteer Trail Crew was hard at work in the Crazy Mountains. Our crew worked in Big Timber Canyon each day to construct a turnpike below Twin Lakes. This structure firmed up a boggy section of the trail that is known to gobble up some loose boots and horseshoes early in the season. Building a turnpike is satisfying work. Imagine your entire neighborhood is being torn apart by violence, your life is in immediate risk, you are scared. Your family, the people who you hold closest, are in danger. The only thing you can do is escape, pack up very little and run. Leaving your entire life behind, the house you saved up to buy, absolutely everything. You traverse continents hoping there is some safe place where your family can be at peace, be safe from being brutally killed by your own country or lawlessness. You have to cross vast seas and oceans - bodies of water are dangerous normally, let alone on a overloaded inflatable without PFDs. The oceans you need to cross, the so called final hurdle, shows no mercy, you loose loved ones. The very people you tried to get to safety. What are you left with? Youve risked and arguably lost everything to escape. _ Im a passionate humanitarian. Its my belief. That belief influences my daily life, my passion, and my shared mission. Like many humanitarians, I respond when crisis takes hold, such as a pandemic or search & rescue situations. Humanitarianism is an active belief in the value of human life. We aim to protect it. I understand everyone suffers. I respect peoples opinions. However we all need to take a deep breath before we pipe up. Be compassionate and put yourself in other peoples shoes as a general practice. You dont always know what people are going through, but appreciate the fact that you may have been through something similar or the same. There is a difference between illegal immigration and refugee/asylum seeking. One, for example, is not a crime. A wall of ignorance will not fix anything - A bucket does not fix a leak permanently, you have to help solve the problem at the source... also the bucket will eventually overflow, just saying, youre only delaying the inevitable flooding. In the meantime you do what you can to HELP SAVE HUMAN LIFE. Maybe feel a little sense of pride that your country is seen to be a safe place? I am not telling you what to believe, nor am I trying to sway your opinion. Some may agree, some may disagree with what I have just layed out. Thats fine. Ps. We have been spending our summer days at the lake. Ive been solo parenting in Canada since mid June and the kids and I have been in the water almost every day! Its been awesome and Im exausted haha but its always worth it! Luckily I havent had to worry about these guys staying in the sun for hours on end with these UPF 50+ swim suites from Reima! They have withstanded muddy moat puddles, dirty sandy bums, at least 20 washes, a few rolls in the dirt and much much more. The Bonnaventure River has some of the most remarkably clear water I’ve ever seen! And large, Atlantic Salmon can regularly be seen holding in its pools, swimming up its rapids and swifts and leaping spectacularly in the air. Particularly later in the season, it’s best to leave your paddle in the canoe for this river and opt to stand in the canoe and push along the bottom with a long pole to navigate it. In the rapids the long pole is still used to “snub” which controls your lateral direction and speed - (yes, we ran the rapids standing!) Wizard Island Wizard island is a volcanic cinder cone which has formed an island in the west end of Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The volcano was created more than 6,000 years ago when a volcano erupted into what is know today as Crater Lake National Park. Wizard island is built on a platform of andesite lava. It includes a large cone of andesite cinder which formed on top. Some parts of the cone which form Wizard island were formed by eruptions underwater, while other sections were part of eruptions above water. The island looks relatively small within the large lake and high rim walls. The island actually rises about 767 feet above the surface of the lake and about 2,400 - 2,500 feet above the floor of the caldera under the surface of the lake. The island is about 1 mile across. The area at the base of the cone is approximately 3.02 square miles. The volume of the cone is 0.6 cubic miles. Another lovely day around Gilford Island. You just cant beat this sunset. There were some politics on this trip that made some days uncomfortable and ended up costing me two friendships (and a kayak, but that is a story for another day). It really sucks when that happens and there isnt much you can do except try not to let it sour the memory of the trip. I like thinking back to the fact that this was my first trip working with my good friend (still) @jasonmotlagh and spending days laughing at some of the dumb shit that went on. When we pulled out of the water on my birthday we met at a pub for dinner. Jason, knowing how much I loved cake brought one to the pub. Adventures like this bring out all our real characters and sometimes they dont mesh like you thought they originally did. Super happy with this photo from yesterday. It was such a beautiful landscape of the mountain range and this sockeye was one of the only ones who actually didnt mind getting their photo taken out of the 50 odd sockeye left in the river. Then rest of them have already made their way down south to Washington. Im so happy to have finally seen these beautiful, endangered sockeye salmon. Cupping for the Ages Part II: Last week we covered cupping with older adults; this week we’re talking kids! Check out the following info clipped from Shannon Gilmartin’s article “Cupping the Pediatric Client” from the June 2019 issue of @massagemag: . BODY COMPOSITION: Body composition is especially important to consider when choosing to use cups with children. As their skin and muscles are new, soft, and still developing, there is a higher probability of bruising. Use clear cups to observe what’s happening to the skin beneath the cup. Stronger suction is not recommended—though this varies by age—since their newer, younger tissues can bruise more easily. . AGE: Children’s ages and respective cupping vary tremendously. Cupping on infants should be done gently, with small cups, and for shorter durations. Duration and strength for young children, aged 2-10, and adolescents into teenage years, aged 11-18, should also be considered and mindfully approached. Regardless of age, any major cupping release could be excessive for their not-fully-developed livers to process. . KEEP IT FUN: Have fun with it! At any age, be sure to evaluate your client as an individual, but with kids, it’s especially important to keep things light. . Another stop we did at Grand Teton National Park was a short hike/nature walk at Schwabacher’s Landing. My goal during our Yellowstone and Grand Teton trips was to see a moose, so when my husband asked the park ranger the best spot to see one, this is where she recommended we go. We got there and the first thing we noticed was the gorgeous view! It was breathtaking and worth the visit even if we didn’t see any wildlife. The girls loved all of the butterflies that were everywhere and overall we had a great little walk. On our way back, we finally spotted a moose! Its trite to say that the last 8 weeks have been a bit of a mind f@#$.. The pause button was hit fast and hard putting my normal life and work on hold. So instead of travel and planning the next trip and assignment I found myself stuck at home with my beautiful family in a beautiful place called home. Ive been out in our adopted back 40 everday with my daughters, building trails, creating forts out of cedar boughs and the giant leaves of skunk cabbage, and looking at animal tracks. Yesterday we poked a stick into some fresh cougar shit and vowed to stay together in those woods. Well get back to farther flung adventures, like last summer when we paddled the Bowron Lakes with @soglephoto and family. But being at home and outside with my kids has never felt as precious as it does today. Part 1: It may look like just a truck, October 11th 2018 at the top of the most beautiful life changing hiking trip we’ve ever been on So far that year we had been in 25 different states Almost 20 National Parks 50 some different motels Drove 35,000 miles in separate vehicles Said yes to every experience possible Spent a load of money on adventure Downsized even more, to 2 totes and 2 suitcases We went to tons of new restaurants on date night We experienced huckleberry for the first time and let me tell you, Mary Lou’s milk bottle in Spokane Washington makes the most incredible huckleberry crisp, with huckleberry ice cream, with huckleberry syrup drizzled over the top. All handmade, from scratch. I’ll never forget that We really let loose that year And man was it fun! But what we didn’t realize was happening is our marriage was growing Our relationship was getting stronger We were falling in love with each other, again Together we were working out in some random parking lot, running track, or hotel gym We were checking out CrossFit boxes on Saturdays before we went on our next adventure We were spending quality time together We were going out on dates again We were learning to communicate our wants and needs and we were opening ourselves up to be extremely vulnerable with the other person We were no longer having sex, we were connecting on a whole new level and learning how we wanted to do it along the way We were learning how to accept our past and realize that that doesn’t have to be our reality anymore We started our first company together, Sunrise Nutrition and Fitness, as coaches to help others live a healthy lifestyle We had no clue what we were doing but we fucking did it TOGETHER Before hitting the road together I had traveled for the railroad for 10 years, leaving Tonya behind at home and only being home on the weekends When it came right down to it we had no clue how to live together Not an idea of what either one of us wanted or liked Clueless to how to have a healthy relationship Mindless to each other and to ourselves The first 8 years of our marriage was literally just a party... Косатки никогда не нападают на людей в дикой природе, но 2020 необычный год. ⠀ Совершенно нетипичное поведение для этих умнейших животных началось в июле в Гибралтарском проливе. Косатки приплывают в этот район за тунцом в летний и осенний период. Обычно встречи с этими животными вызывают восторг. Но в этом году он быстро сменялся на страх. ⠀ Косатки сначала спокойно плыли рядом с судном и радовали людей своим присутствием, а потом начинали окружать и кусать рулевое перо и киль яхт. Атаки продолжались от 20 минут и более 60 минут. В одном из случаев косатки оторвали кусок пера и оставили экипаж без управления. Капитан позвонил спасателям со словами: «На нас напали косатки!». ⠀ Почему они начали атаковать яхты? Ученые предположили, что такое поведение связано со стрессом. Есть мнение, что косатки разозлились на нас и у них есть на это много причин. Популяция в Гибралтарском проливе находится под угрозой исчезновения - их осталось менее 50 особей. Тунец, за которым они приплывают – также становится все более редким. Косатки буквально вынуждены соперничать с людьми за еду. Ходили слухи, что рыбаки нападали на косаток. Тунец в наше время – «золотая» рыба...поэтому не удивлюсь если это окажется правдой. ⠀ В Гибралтарском проливе большой судоходный трафик, а вместе с этим много шума и загрязнений. Во время пандемии были введены различные ограничения и трафик уменьшился. Сейчас все возобновляется – возможно и это злит косаток. Они успели привыкнуть к «лучшей» жизни, когда наш мир уменьшил натиск на их владения. ⠀ Конечно, это всего лишь теория. Реальную причину знают только сами косатки. Учитывая, что это очень умные и социальные животные – стресс и злость вполне могут объяснить нападения. В стаях косаток были замечены малыши. Возможно, взрослые особи хотели таким образом защитить своих детей. Именно малыши чаще всего погибают от травм при столкновениях с судами и запутывания в сетях. ⠀ Нападения на яхты – это лишь верхушка айсберга. Короли океанов чем-то недовольны и уже открыто это показывают. Ученые считают важным решать причины такого поведения, а не последствия. Очень надеюсь, что так и будет. А вы что думаете?
