To see real, lasting changes, you’ll need to take accountability and commit to real, lasting changes in your diet and lifestyle. As easy as it is to blame your weight on your metabolism, scientifically the bigger you are, the more kcals you actually burn. As larger bodies require more energy to carry out basic bodily functions. You MAY have given yourself moderate adaptions by crazy low yoyo dieting, but ultimately your metabolism isnt damaged. Long term we can actively do things that will help us. Small tips to improve your metabolism- Start monitoring your sleep/stress- Sleep deprivation is perceived by the body as an additional stressor, so cortisol goes up and testosterone drops, this isnt ideal for fat loss. This may mean addressing your bedtime rituals and lowering day to day stress. Start strength training- Building muscle will help you burn more calories even when you’re not moving/ the higher your muscle mass, the faster your metabolism. When we over diet and over-do cardio our body is forced to break down muscle to use for energy. The lower your muscle mass, the slower your metabolism. Protein intake- Adding lean protein to your diet will help the metabolism in two ways. 1. Supports muscle building and muscle retention 2. the foods themselves are more challenging for your body to digest, so it takes more energy from your body to utilise them than other foods. Move- Try to make activity part of your daily routine. That could even include walking as part of your journey to work. Even motoring your steps can be eye opening to how little you actually move. Eat regular healthy meals- Eating more frequently keeps hunger at bay, you’ll also have 1. More energy to move your body. 2. Be less likely to overeat 3.
