According to Jain religious beliefs, Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara Neminath became an ascetic after he saw the slaughter of animals for a feast on his wedding. He renounced all worldly pleasures and came to Mount Girnar to attain salvation. He attained omniscience and Moksha on the Mount Girnar. His bride-to-be Rajulmati also renounced and became a aryika (Female mendicant in Jainism). Girnar was anciently called Raivata or Ujjayanta, sacred amongst the Jains to Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankar, and a place of pilgrimage before 250 BCE. Situated on the first plateau of Mount Girnar at the height of about 3800 steps, at an altitude of 2370 ft above Junagadh, still some 600 ft below the first summit of Girnar, there are Jain temples with marvelous carvings in marble. Some 16 Jain temples here form a sort of fort on the ledge at the top of the great cliff. These temples are along the west face of the hill, and are all enclosed. The Neminath temple is the largest temple of the group standing in a quadrangular court 195 x 130 feet. The temple was rebuilt completely by Sajjana, the governor of Saurashtra appointed by Jayasimha Siddharaja, in 1129 CE. Travel Story from Ellora __________________________________________ It was last October when I went to this place, Kailasa Temple, near Aurangabad. A megalith carved out of a single rock, the Kailasa Temple is the only structure in the world that is carved from the top to bottom. Every single design and measurement was planned very accurately as once its cut there was no chance to change it by adding any extra stone or piece of rock. There is an interesting tale about the Kailasa Temple of Ellora. Mughal King Aurangzeb who destroyed thousands of Hindu temple, also tried to destroy Kailasa temple. It is said that 1000 people were sent to destroy the temple in the year 1682. They worked for 3 years but they could only break and disfigure a few statues. Aurangzeb finally gave up on this task and realizing that it was impossible to completely destroy the temple as the rock was simply too hard to demolish, even though artisans used only hammers, chisels and picks to construct it. . Happy World Tourism Day! Khajuraho - Backpacking tips and what not :! Tips for solo traveller and others : ✅ Khajuraho is well planned and tourist friendly. All information is online. It is overpriced for the most part. If on budget do your homework. ✅ Homestays are the best options for budget travellers. Staying close to the western gate will give you good deal. ✅ They have a zostel, but I found it catering to foreign crowd and full of youngsters wanting to spend time with Foreigners. ✅ Homestays can be arranged for as little as 500 a night with Western Toilet. Cheaper if you are ready to squat :) - I stayed at Junkie House and was happy to be there. ✅ Train is the cheapest way to get to Khajuraho and there are 2 trains from Jhansi. ✅ Shared auto will get you to from station to temple for 20 bucks. ✅ 3 nights or 2 whole days are more than enough ✅ If you stay close to Western group of temples - All temples can be covered by feet apart from the south group of temples ( but trust me if you like to hike you can do those are well by feet ) ✅ Ranhe falls will cost you a lot by auto or taxi. If you don’t find travel partners to share cost - just rent a bike and go explore - remember you have to pay the entry fee at part as well. So if you go by auto or car you will be paying a higher entry fee. ✅ Light and sound show is a good investment. ✅ Food is extremely touristy but I am a foodie and I opted for spending as they have a authentic Italian Restaurant - #Mediterranio - they make their own pizza sauce and pizza dough too! Marwari ki Thali was also good as for Indian food. Rajah Cafe caters to rich Indian family crowd and I found it extremely average when it came to food. 🕉️Iravatanesvara temple or Jurahareswarar temple is located in the temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamilnadu, India. It was built by the Pallavas in the early 8th century CE. #Ellora is a #UNESCO World #Heritage Site located in the #Aurangabad district of #Maharashtra, India. It is one of the largest rock-cut monastery-temple cave complexes in the world, featuring Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments, and artwork, dating from the 600–1000 CE period. Cave 16, in particular, features the largest single monolithic rock excavation in the world, the Kailasha temple, a chariot shaped monument dedicated to #Shiva. The Kailasha temple excavation also features sculptures depicting the gods, goddesses and mythologies found in Vaishnavism, Shaktism as well as relief panels summarizing the two major Hindu Epics. There are over 100 caves at the site, all excavated from the basalt cliffs in the Charanandri Hills, 34 of which are open to public. These consist of 12 Buddhist (caves 1–12), 17 Hindu (caves 13–29) and 5 Jain (caves 30–34) caves, each group representing deities and mythologies prevalent in the 1st millennium CE, as well as monasteries of each respective religion. They were built close to one another and illustrate the religious harmony that existed in ancient India. All of the Ellora monuments were built during Hindu dynasties such as the Rashtrakuta dynasty, which constructed part of the Hindu and Buddhist caves, and the Yadava dynasty, which constructed a number of the Jain caves. Funding for the construction of the monuments was provided by royals, traders and the wealthy of the region. Although the caves served as monasteries, temples and a rest stop for pilgrims, the sites location on an ancient South Asian trade route also made it an important commercial centre in the Deccan region. It is 29 kilometres (18 miles) north-west of Aurangabad, and about 300 kilometres (190 miles) east-northeast of Mumbai. Hampi (Hampe) is a village and temple town recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi in northern Karnataka, India. It is located within the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Intricate and Beautifully carved Makara Thorana on the entrance to the Garbhagudi of Sri Chennakeshava temple, Belur. The Doorway Lintel on the Garbhagudi towards east is decorated with Makara Torana. Lord Vishnu along with his consort Lakshmi is seated within the Prabhavali (arch). Vishnu and Lakshmi are flanked by Chamara Sundaris on both the sides and below them is Garuda saluting his master. On both the sides of the panel are Varuna and Varuni seated on Makaras. From the mouth of Makaras extends a Thorana called Makara Thorana which surrounds the Prabhavali. The Dashavataras ( Ten avatars or forms of Lord Vishnu) adorns the Makara Thorana. The center of Makara Thorana has a Kirthimukha. Two Lions are flanked above the Makara Thorana. Below the Vishnu and Lakshmi panel is a band which has 12 three dimensional figurines of dancers and musicians. These figurines depicts the state of joyfulness while serving lord. ❇️Travelers Posts❇️ Loc: Pattadakkal Author: @sajnaali . Visiting Badami is incomplete without visiting the previous capitals of Chalukyas - Pattadakkal and Aihole. The first day leisurely spent time at Badami and in advance enquired to the hotel manager about the transportation facility to Pattadakkal. There was buses and shared autos. I choose the latter one. It was the first time experience in travel life to enjoy a ride with locals. Time went so fast as I was playing with the twins kids in the auto. Pattadakkal has a limited source of transportation to Aihole but I wasnt worried about that but got into the main temple complex which consists of 10 temples. The garden around was well maintained and it was beautiful. There was no much crowd as visitors here and history says crowning of Chalukya kings used to happen here, thats how it got the name Pattadakkal. Later due to the water availability they moved the capital to Badami. It was a short and 2-hour visit. Before I stepped out of the compound, I noticed the lady with a bottle of local yoghurt. 🕉️🚩🛕🇮🇳⠀ ⠀ ⠀ The Harshat Mata Temple is a Hindu temple in the Abhaneri village of Rajasthan, in north-western India. The temple is now dedicated to a goddess called Harshat Mata, although some art historians theorize that it was originally a Vaishnavite shrine.⠀ ⠀ The original Harshat Mata temple has been ruined and modified over several centuries.No epigraphic evidence been found regarding the construction of the temple or the Chand Baori stepwell connected with it. Based on similarities in style and carvings with the terraced temples of Paranagar and Mandore, the Baodi can be dated to 8th-9th century. ⠀ ⠀ The builder of the original temple is unknown. According to Agrawala, the sculptures are representative of the early Gurjara-Pratihara art. Reitz theorizes that the temple may have been constructed under the patronage of a local Chahamana prince (possibly Guvaka I) with support of his Gurjara-Pratihara overlord. Atherton notes that the lack of adequate historical information prevents attribution of the temple to a particular ruler with certainty, but it is more likely that the Gurjara-Pratiharas were the patrons of the temple, with Nagabhata II being the best candidate.⠀ ⠀ The entrance to the temple faces east, towards the rising sun. The temple complex is built on two broad stepped terraces (jagati), which originally included a circumambulatory path, and are now partially ruined. The boundary of the lower terrace has a relatively plain set of foundation and base moldings (vedibandha), which have decorative patterns at the top. The ruins of two small shrines flank the entrance stairway. The upper terrace is far more decorated, but is largely destroyed; the only image that remains intact is of Narasimha flanked by warriors. ⠀ ⠀ In the 20th century, the sanctum had a Durga idol, which was stolen. Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the worlds second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably Indias richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins. Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampis ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an austere, grandiose site of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others. Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokan epigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Sahastrabahu Temple ( Saas Bahu Temple), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. Sasbahu Temple, also called the Sas-Bahu Mandir, Sas-Bahu Temples, Sahastrabahu Temple or Harisadanam temple, is an 11th-century twin temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. Near the Gwalior Fort and dedicated to Vishnu in his Padmanabha form, like most Hindu and Jain temples in this region, it is mostly in ruins and was badly damaged from numerous invasions and Hindu-Muslim wars in the region. It was built in 1093 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, according to an inscription found in the larger of the twin temple. The twin temples are situated in the Gwalior Fort. Out of all the places to be visited at Polonnaruwa my favourite place would be the Thivanka Pilima Geya which was built by King Parakramabahu as a part of the Jethavanarama Complex. I personally like it because of the frescos inside the walls of the image house which depict Jathaka stories (prior births of Lord Buddha before enlightenment). If you observe closely you can see how much care they have given into drawing these paintings by the graceful expressions on the faces of the gods, the dramatic poses in which their bodies have been cast and the way in which delicate fingers are held in dramatic mudras. This is the only place where you can see well preserved paintings of Polonnaruwa era where most people tend to omit this place as its at the very end of the Polonnaruwa ruin complex. Whenever I go to visit Polonnaruwa ruins I definitely start off at the Thivanka image house as I spend sooo much time observing the paintings since capturing these paintings are not allowed I try to remember all the paintings in my head, and I would request all who visit to the ruin complex to make it a must to visit this place. When talking about the image house it is one of the three vaulted-roof shrines(Gedige) seen at Polonnaruwa where the roof and the walls were built completely by bricks. The image house mainly consist of four parts, namely, the sanctum(Garbhagrha), the vestibule(Antarala), the Mandala and the entrance porch. As you enter you can see a giant Buddha statue bent at three places(reason to why its called Thivanka) standing on a lotus base in the Garbhagrha(sanctum). The Buddha statue has been built attached to a screen wall and between the screen wall and the inner side of the rear wall of the image house is a narrow ambulatory. Beside the narrow ambulatory at the ground level it is said that there was another ambulatory around the statue on the upper level as well. The exterior walls of the image house is adorned with decorative sculptures of edifices along with Bodhisattva, deities, lions, swans and dwarfs in various postures. From my understanding Ram janmabhumi Mandir at ayodhya will be built by the shilpis and sthapatis of sompura cast of gujrat. Here is few pictures of one of their recent project in gujrat. It will give idea about how divya , bhavya and apratim the ram mandir will look like . Sompura sthapatis are well versed in ancient maru gurjara sthapatya shaili of western india. అల్లాడుపల్లె వీరభద్ర స్వామి ఆలయ చరిత్ర -తవ్వా ఓబుల్రెడ్డి *************************************************** శ్రీమద్విరాట్ పోతులూరి వీరబ్రహ్మేంద్ర యోగీంద్రులు స్వయంగా శిల్పించి, ప్రతిష్టించిన శ్రీ వీరభద్ర స్వామి అల్లాడుపల్లె క్షేత్రంలో వెలిసి, భక్తులకు కొంగుబంగారంగా నిలిచారు. రాయలసీమతో పాటు కర్నాటక ప్రాంతం నుండీ కూడా భక్తులు తరలి వచ్చి పవిత్ర కుందూనది ఒడ్డున వెలసిన శ్రీ వీరభద్రస్వామిని దర్శించుకుంటూ ఉంటారు. దైవక్షేత్రాలను , స్వయంభువులు, తపోనిధి మహర్షి ప్రతిష్టితాలు, సాధారణ వేదవిధులైన రుత్విక్కులచే ప్రతిష్టితాలు అని మూడు విధాలుగా విభజించారు. వీటిలో మొదటి రెండు విధాల క్షేత్రాలు మహిమాన్వితాలనీ, దివ్యశక్తి సంపన్నములనీ, భక్తజన శుభాభీష్ట ప్రదములనీ చెప్తారు. అల్లాడుపల్లె వీరభద్ర మూర్తి తపోనిధి మహర్షి(వీరబ్రహ్మేంద్ర స్వామి)చే ప్రతిష్టితమై మహిమాన్విత క్షేత్రంగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది. *కడప జిల్లా చాపాడు మండలం అల్లాడుపల్లె వద్ద మైదుకూరు- ప్రొద్దుటూరు రహదారిపై మైదుకూరుకు 6 కి.మీ, ప్రొద్దుటూరికి 14 కి.మీ. దూరంలో శ్రీ వీరభద్రస్వామి దేవస్థానం వెలిసింది. అల్లాడుపల్లె సమీపంలోని కుందూ నదికి వచ్చే వరదల కారణంగా అగ్రామ ప్రజలు ఎప్పుడూ కష్టాలతో అల్లాడుతూ ఉండినందున అగ్రామానికి అల్లాడుపల్లె అని పేరు వచ్చిందని కొందరు చెప్తారు. ఆలు అంటే ఆవులు, పశువులు అనీ, ఆడుట అంటే తిరుగుట అనీ అర్థం. ఈ ప్రాంతపు బయళ్లలో మేతకోసం ఆవులూ, పశువులూ తిరుగుతూ ఉండినందున ఈ పల్లె ఆలాడుపల్లె గా ప్రసిద్ధమైందనీ, క్రమక్రమంగా అదే అల్లాడుపల్లె గా మారిందనీ కూడా చెప్తారు. *స్వామివారి ఆవిర్భావం కాలజ్ఞానకర్త, శ్రీ పోతులూరి వీర బ్రహ్మేంద్రస్వామి క్రీ. శ . 1608- క్రీ. శ 1693 మధ్య కాలంలో రాయలసీమలో తత్వవేత్తగా వెలుగొందారు. ప్రభోధాలతో, సంస్కరణోద్యమంతో సంచారం చేశారు. శ్రీవీర బ్రహ్మేంద్రస్వామి తన 12 వ ఏటనే దేశసంచారానికి కర్నాటకనుండి బయలుదేరి కర్నూలు జిల్లా బనగానపల్లెకు చేరుకున్నారు. అక్కడ గరిమరెడ్డి అచ్చమ్మగారింట్లో పశులకాపరిగా చేరారు. తాను గీసిన గిరిలో పశువులు మేస్తుండగా , బ్రహ్మంగారు శ్రీ వీరభద్రస్వామి విగ్రహాన్ని మలిచారు. తన మనసులో ఆ వీరభద్రున్నే గురువుగా తలచుకొన్నారు. జ్ఞానిగా మారి గుహలో కూర్చుని కాలజ్ఞాన రచన చేశారు. బనగానపల్లె మజిలీ ముగిశాక, శ్రీవీర బ్రహ్మేంద్రస్వామి తన దేశసంచారాన్ని కొనసాగించారు. కొన్నేళ్ల తర్వాత అతివృష్టి కారణంగా వరదలు వచ్చాయి. ఈ వరదలకు కుందూ లో ప్రవేశించిన శ్రీ వీరభద్రస్వామి విగ్రహం అల్లాడుపల్లె సమీపంలోని మడుగులోకి చేరింది. Hari Hareshwara Temple ಹರಿಹರೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ Place: Harihar, Davanagere, Karnataka. Main Deity: Lord Harihara (A combined form of Shiva and Vishnu). Legend: According to the legend, A demon named Guhasura lived in this region. Guha meditated continuously for years towards Lord Brahma and obtained a boon from him, that is neither Hari (Vishnu) not Hara (Shiva) could him single handedly. After getting this boon, Guha started torturing devas and humans in that region. After seeing this, Vishnu and Shiva decided to unite and take the form of Harihara. After that, they killed Guhasura. श्री कृष्ण के इस पवित्र तीर्थ स्थल को बना दिया था मस्जिद, एक हिन्दू वीर ने भुजबल से इसे फिर से हासिल किया ... यह हिंदुओ का महातीर्थ द्वारिकाधीश मंदिर , द्वारिका है, पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार इस मंदिर का निर्माण श्रीकृष्ण ने पौत्र ने करवाया था । 1472 ईस्वी में इस मंदिर पर महमूद बेगड़ा ने आक्रमण करके इसे मस्जिद में परिवर्तित कर दिया ।। उसके बाद आमेर के राजा मानसिंहजी ने गुजरात पर आक्रमण कर गुजरात मुसलमान सल्तनत को समाप्त किया, ओर द्वारिकाधीश से मस्जिद बने मंदिर को दुबारा मंदिर बनवाया ।। मात्र यही मंदिर नही है, जिसकी रक्षा मानसिंहजी ने की, उड़ीसा का जगन्नाथ मंदिर भी अगर आज मस्जिद नही है, तो वह मानसिंहजी की ही देन है । 1592 में उड़ीसा के जगन्नाथ मंदिर के लिए मानसिंहजी ने उड़ीसा में काफी कत्लेआम मचाया था ।। काशी में हजारो मंदिर बनवाने का जिक्र मानसिंहजी के इतिहास में है, बिहार पटना स्तिथ पौराणिक सूर्यमन्दिर मानसिंहजी ने बनवाया है, भारत का कोई ऐसा कौना नही है, जहां जहां के पौराणिक मंदिर मानसिंहजी में ना बनवाये हो । मीराबाईजी जैसी कृष्णभक्त भी आमेर पधारी थी, उनकी स्मृति में भी मानसिंहजी ने जगशिरोमणि नाम से एक मंदिर का निर्माण किया, जिसमे भगवान विष्णु के साथ मीराबाई की मूर्ति लगी है । हिंदुओ को समझना चाहिए, की मानसिंहजी का इतिहास योजनाबद्ध तरीके से क्यो बर्बाद किया ? आज आप फिल्मों को सनातन का शत्रु मानते है, आपको विचार करना चाहिए, की बार बार क्यो आमेर जयपुर परिवार को ही फिल्मों के माध्यम से बदनाम किया गया ?? बंगाल, बिहार, झारखंड, उड़ीसा, गुजरात हर जगह अपने भाइयो के लिए लड़ने वाले, ओर जितने वाले मानसिंहजी का इतिहास इतना क्यो कलंकित किया गया, की अपने विजेता का नाम लेते भी संकोच करे है 1 - @hindurashtrakishaan on Instagram

The Veera Narayana temple is located in Belavadi, a village in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka state, India. The temple was built during the rule of the Hoysala Empire. Belavadi is 29 km southeast of Chikmagalur town on the Chikmagalur-Javagal highway. It is a short distance from the famous temple towns of Belur and Halebidu. ● Shri Rameshwara Temple, Kudli, Shivamogga District . The temple is a Hoysala construction of the non-ornate variety and is dated to the 12th century. Koodli is a town of great antiquity and is located about 9 km north-east of Shimoga city. The town gets its name because it is situated at the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra tributaries that form the Tungabhadra river. Archaeological surveys have unearthed tools and other artifacts which indicate that the region in the vicinity of Koodli (and along the nearby banks of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers) had been under habitation during the Paleolithic, the Neolithic and the Megalithic periods. Written epigraphs such as the Malavalli pillar inscription is available from the period of the Chutu dynasty, a 2nd-century AD vassal of the Shatavahana empire. The shrine is an ekakuta construction (single shrine and tower). The material used is Soap stone, a standard in Hoysala constructions. On the protruding tower of the vestibule is the royal Hoysala emblem. ——— Ceremonial fires glorified the idols that dwelt in the sanctum of this magnificent stone chariot, an icon of the once powerful Vijayanagara Empire. Today, it stands partially destroyed and restored, isolated and bereft of its inhabitants. After its rulers were beaten, the Empire it is said, was pillaged and ravaged by the armies of the sultanate, who left it to burn for months. Fire, the element which glorified their Gods was the element that ultimately caused their ruin. This glorious stone chariot, once the symbol of a thriving Empire, today stands as the symbol of a dead yet immortal civilization, as the thousands of tourists that visit it would suggest. The Airavatesvarar temple is one among a cluster of eighteen medieval era large Hindu temples in the Kumbakonam area, Thanjavur District. The temple is dedicated to Shiva. It also reverentially displays Vaishnavism and Shaktism traditions of Hinduism, along with the legends associated with Nayanmars – the Bhakti movement saints of Shaivism. The stone temple incorporates a chariot structure, and includes major Vedic and Puranic deities such as Indra, Agni, Varuna, Vayu, Brahma, Surya, Vishnu, Saptamtrikas, Durga, Saraswati, Sri devi (Lakshmi), Ganga, Yamuna, Subrahmanya, Ganesha, Kama, Rati and others. Shivas consort has a dedicated shrine called the Periya Nayaki Amman temple. This is a detached temple situated to the north of the Airavateshvarar temple. This might have been a part of the main temple when the outer courts were complete. At present, parts of the temple such as the gopuram is in ruins, and the main temple and associated shrines stand alone. It has two sun dials namely morning and evening sun dials which can be seen as wheels of the chariot. The temple continues to attract large gatherings of Hindu pilgrims every year during Magha, while some of the images such as those of Durga and Shiva are part of special pujas. ☘️ . KONARK SUN TEMPLE Konark is also known as Arkakshetra, Black Pagoda (due to black tower) or Kainapara. Ark (Sun) Kon (Corner) Kshetra (place). Its part of UNESCO World heritage from 1984 n now entrusted to ASI. Its a 13th century Sun temple built by Narasimha Deva I. Its 70kms from Bhubaneshwar n 35kms from Puri. On map it almost forms a triangle. The first pic shows the Audience Hall (128 ft) n not the Main Sanctum (229 ft). The sanctum is erased to ground by Invaders. The other small portions surviving are Dancing Hall (Natya Mandir) n Dining Hall (Bhoga Mantapa). There was 7 horse with 24 wheels chariot among which only one horse survives n few wheels. The famous Wheel depicting the mundane is world famous. It is believed that it took 12 years with 1200 artisans to complete this grandeur. Ironically ASI is doing chemical washing past 12 years! One who visits Puri n Bhubaneshwar will not miss Konark. A glorious 16th century creation of the Vijayanagara empire, the Virabhadra Temple at Lepakshi is known for a number of its sculptures, not least of which are the hanging pillars. The temple stands atop the granite Kurmasaila (Hill of the Tortoise). The temple complex has several shrines dedicated to Papaneswara, Raghunatha, Srirama, Durga and Virabhadra (the main shrine). Lord Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva, was the patron God of the Nayak rulers. An awesome and beautiful Hoysala construction and it is summetric in nature though the constructions were made under two different persons. Almost all the idols and carvings are damaged upto the cealing level but above that the carvings are beautiful and the temple is dedicated to 3 gods Keshava, Janardhana and venugopala but all the 3 idols are damaged and hence no pooja is performed here. Undoubtedly spectacular place to visit in Karnataka. One of my best places to visit more than once. The temple in itself is a reflection of the excellence and grandeur of art and architecture of great Indian sculptors of the 12th century A. D. Here are a few facts not known about this Chola temple of Thanjavur: a) The original name of the deity was Rajarajeshwar. It was the Marathas who gave it the name Brihadeeshwara or the Great Ishwara. b) The main temple is entirely built of granite. More than 130,000 tons of granite is said to have been used to build it. c) A long associated myth with this temple temple is that the shadow of the main structure does not fall on the ground. However, this has been proven wrong by scientists. d) The statue of Nandi at the entrance of the temple is carved out of a single stone. e) The main Vimanam, which is at about 200 feet is often called Dakshin Meru or Southern Meru. f) The inspiration to build the temple came to Raja Raja Cholan during his visit to Sri Lanka and is a result of a dream he had. g) The temple has a portrait of Raja Raja Cholan paying obeisance to Lord Natarajar. This is undoubtedly, the first ever instance of a royal portrait. Sharing a series of photos of Chandramouleshwar temple in Hubli, Karnataka. (1/6) I had visited Hubli (Karnataka) last year for a family event. When I arrived, I came to know that I had a couple of extra hours in my hand before check in. So I googled to see if I can explore any part of the town near to the hotel. I found out about a small temple which was 900 years old built during the Badami Chalukyan era. I had no other idea about the place except for the Google Maps location. When I reached the location I saw nothing but hutments there. When I enquired with the locals they guided me to a path which led to the temple, and there it was sitting among all the encroachment and chaos, a serene marvel sculpted from red and black granite stones. I later learned that Archaeological Survey of India is working on the restoration of the temple, including removal of encroachments. I visited the shrine, sat there for a few minutes in silence (hardly anyone visits it) and then ofcourse took some pictures. - @ar.gautampai on Instagram

Did You Know These Amazing Facts About The Konark Sun Temple? A trip to Odisha is incomplete unless you pay a visit to the 13th century Konark Sun Temple. An architectural marvel, this temple complex is built like sun gods towering chariot drawn by seven horses on 12 wheels. Though today, the temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and much of the structure has deteriorated, it is still one of the most popular temples in India. The structure has been built using black granite and it took 12 years to complete its architecture. One of the most fascinating things of this temple was that the sun idol was suspended in the air as there were magnets used in the construction. So when you entered the main temple, youd see a tall idol in mid-air. For years, it was a mystery as to how this happened. People did not realise it was the magnetic field from all four sides that made this happen. But this also led to the removal of the idol. It is believed that this magnetic field affected the compass navigation for sailors and when they were invading India, they ordered the magnets to be removed. Thus, the idol could no longer be suspended in the air. Today, tourists arent allowed to go into the main chamber as it has been sealed.
