Conocer el origen de nuestra comida, el esfuerzo que toma producirla, el cuidado que hay que tener y la paciencia, te hace querer y valorar tus alimentos con lo cual no será nunca más normal botarlos. La dejamos de ver como un bien de consumo más al cual le podemos exigir perfección, si no que la respetamos tal cual es, independiente de su tamaño, color o forma. Los invitamos a tener su propio huerto y atreverse a tener al menos una hierba que cultivar y cuidar. De verdad que lo agradecerán. Lots of broccoli side shoots, brocolini and snowpeas. These tender, young shoots from mustard plants are cooked to make one of most delicious tarkaari, much loved by North easterns. This Indian summer has made our Autumn veg grow very well. The brassicas were planted under fleece at the begining of August and have escaped the ravages of cabbage white butterflies. We have been cutting Red Russian Kale and lettuce for several weeks already. Late planted runner and dwarf French beans are still harvesting heavily and are just as delicate as mid summer crops. Hello PA volunteer Kirsty here celebrating small and slow soloutions this week in the chookyard. 🙌🐔 . We adore our feathered flock and as the weather starts to warm up here in SW Vic, we begin to keep a closer eye on them to ensure they stay healthy and parasite free.🧐 . They free range most of the day but the deep litter system we use in their coops is an important part of this. Once a year, generally around spring veggie bed prep time (yep, were late), we clear out the spent deep litter and add it straight into the compost. We then replace it with fresh litter, usually straw and leaves (whatever we have), with the addition of some parasite busting herbs such as Lavender, Rosemary and Wormwood.🌿 . The coops smell amazing and the crew get stuck straight into scratching and hunting as soon as theyre back home. Growing and employing medicinal plants for chooks is a great example of small and slow soloutions at work. . Simple, easeful, respectful of nature and resources. Winner!
