#भागीरथ वर्ष 1899-1900 में राजस्थान में एक बदनाम अकाल पड़ा था .... विक्रम संवत १९५६ (1956) में ये अकाल पड़ने के कारण राजस्थान में इसे छप्पनिया-काळ कहा जाता है .... एक अनुमान के मुताबिक इस अकाल से राजस्थान में लगभग पौने-दो करोड़ लोगों की मृत्यु हो गयी थी .... पशु पक्षियों की तो कोई गिनती नहीं है .... लोगों ने खेजड़ी के वृक्ष की छाल खा-खा के इस अकाल में जीवनयापन किया था .... यही कारण है कि राजस्थान के लोग अपनी बहियों (मारवाड़ी अथवा महाजनी बही-खातों) में पृष्ठ संख्या 56 को रिक्त छोड़ते हैं .... छप्पनिया-काळ की विभीषिका व तबाही के कारण राजस्थान में 56 की संख्या अशुभ मानी है .... इस दौर में बीकानेर रियासत के यशस्वी महाराजा थे .... गंगासिंह जी राठौड़ .... (बीका राठौड़ अथवा बीकानेर रियासत के संस्थापक राव बीका के वंशज) .... अपने राज्य की प्रजा को अन्न व जल से तड़फ-तड़फ के मरता देख गंगासिंह जी का हृदय द्रवित हो उठा .... गंगासिंह जी ने सोचा क्यों ना बीकानेर से पँजाब तक नहर बनवा के सतलुज से रेगिस्तान में पानी लाया जाए ताकि मेरी प्रजा को किसानों को अकाल से राहत मिले .... नहर निर्माण के लिए गंगासिंह जी ने एक अंग्रेज इंजीनियर आर जी कनेडी (पँजाब के तत्कालीन चीफ इंजीनियर) ने वर्ष 1906 में इस सतलुज-वैली प्रोजेक्ट की रूपरेखा तैयार की .... लेकिन .... बीकानेर से पँजाब व बीच की देशी रियासतों ने अपने हिस्से का जल व नहर के लिए जमीन देने से मना कर दिया .... नहर निर्माण में रही-सही कसर कानूनी अड़चनें डाल के अंग्रेजों ने पूरी कर दी .... महाराजा गंगासिंह जी ने परिस्थितियों से हार नहीं मानी और इस नहर निर्माण के लिए अंग्रेजों से एक लंबी कानूनी लड़ाई लड़ी और जीती भी .... बहावलपुर (वर्तमान पाकिस्तान) रियासत ने तो अपने हिस्से का पानी व अपनी ज़मीन देने से एकदम मना कर दिया .... महाराजा गंगासिंह जी ने जब कानूनी लड़ाई जीती तो वर्ष 1912 में पँजाब के तत्कालीन गवर्नर सर डैंजिल इबटसन की पहल पर दुबारा कैनाल योजना बनी .... लेकिन .... किस्मत एक वार फिर दगा दे गई .... इसी दरमियान प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध शुरू हो चुका था .... 4 सितम्बर 1920 को बीकानेर बहावलपुर व पँजाब रियासतों में ऐतिहासिक सतलुज घाटी प्रोजेक्ट समझौता हुआ .... महाराजा गंगासिंह जी ने 1921 में गंगनहर की नींव रखी .... 26 अक्टूम्बर 1927 को गंगनहर का निर्माण पूरा हुआ .... हुसैनवाला से शिवपुरी तक 129 किलोमीटर लंबी ये उस वक़्त दुनिया की सबसे लंबी नहर थी .... गंगनहर के निर्माण में उस वक़्त कुल 8 करोड़ रुपये खर्च हुए .... गंगनहर से वर्तमान में 30 लाख हे - @statusbikana on Instagram

To Ishaan, I first saw you silently cramped up in discomfort and timidity behind that small bench with an expressionless face and lost eyes. I tried to decipher the sentiments hidden in your gaze, but it only made me wander into the backyard of my home as a child, where I sat expressionless and lost. You were different, your world was different, but a lot like mine was at once. It was filled with miracles and marvel that no one else seemed to appreciate. Your eyes scribed fables and orchestrated legends, something your grades couldn’t do. Your silence spoke volumes, just like your art did, but you never found the one to resonate with it. “पत्री से हटकर बहोत कम लोग सोच पाते है।” I often found myself gawking at the sky and wondering if I’ll ever be able to take the weariness in your eyes away. It took a while, until I recognised the catalyst of light hidden in your brain between the bristles of the brushes and the stained palettes. The darkest of blacks within you were still the brightest of whites on the canvas. You didn’t need someone to use a cane and numb your hands, instead, just someone to have a little faith in you. And while I was trying to be that someone for you, I could feel each shade of colour and every stroke of your brush and I knew a picture would never do justice to your art. Then, one find day it was your turn. You defied your fear of change, held your head high and left those who didn’t have enough faith in you awestruck. I saw you venture out in the unknown, fighting it, breaking free and then running straight into my arms like the little lost boy I spotted behind that bench. No matter where life takes you, I hope you never give up, like you didn’t back then. I hope you roll in colours you’ve never worn and dance on the canvas of life with no water colours and no fading, because this time there will be paint so thick, it’ll build up mountains, like flames sparking off your canvas. ~Writing to you as I paint my canvas quietly, hoping that it’ll be good enough to complement yours someday. Her earliest memories of her Abba was him sitting on a writing table in his white kurta-pyjama smoking incessantly and writing in the wee hours of the morning. As a child, she was convinced poet was a euphemism for people who dont work! Living in Red Flag Hall, a commune like flat of the Communist Party of India meant the family lived frugally. Her mother Shaukat Azmi worked in Prithvi Thearte and in her absence her Abba fed, bathed and looked after the children. Her mother often rehearsed her lines spontaneously in front of dhobi, cook etc. Shabana got petrified and assumed her mother is turning insane. Her father dropped his work and took her for long walk on beach, he explained to her, her mother has not enough time to rehearse and as a family it is their duty to support her. Shabana was embarrassed about her father while growing up since Kaifi never wore in western clothes or could speak English. It was years later, Shabana finally realised the grandeur of her father. When she finally confided in her father she wants to act, he said I will support you in whatever you choose to do. If you want to become a shoemaker (moochi) I will support you provided you tell yourself that you will try to become the best moochi in the business. One of the heart warming incidence between father and daughter is related to mangoes. When Shabana was young she brought a bag full of mangoes from her friend. Kaifi noticed this but did not say a word. It was 1950s and the family was living frugally.
