Around the November 7 or 8, the new season of tea begins and the Ro is used for the first time indicating the start of the winter season. At this time, to celebrate the beginning of a new season of tea, the seal of the jar with new tea plucked in spring is broken and the new, fresh tea is used for the first time. Breaking this seal of the jar is called Kuchikiri. L’arte giapponese approdò in Europa nella metà del XIX secolo, quando, grazie alla restaurazione Meiji, il Giappone si aprì a nuove influenze; gli artisti del nostro continente, in particolare gli impressionisti e i pittori dell’art nouveau, rimasero affascinati dalle delicate raffigurazioni giapponesi, tanto da trarne ampio spunto per le proprie opere. Contemporaneamente, come spesso accade, prese avvio una vera e propria caccia al tesoro, nella quale i collezionisti cercavano di aggiudicarsi i pezzi più belli e rari: obiettivi molto ambiti erano le celebri stampe giapponesi. lovers-in-the-upstairs-room-of-a-teahouse Ukiyo-e – questo il loro nome in giapponese – significa letteralmente “immagini del mondo fluttuante“, con riferimento sia all’impetuosa cultura che li produsse, sia allo stile che, non prevedendo l’utilizzo del chiaroscuro, rende ogni scena quasi surreale. Gli ukiyo-e fiorirono durante il periodo Edo (1603-1868) ed erano destinati prevalentemente alla popolazione meno ricca del Giappone, dal momento che il loro prezzo contenuto li rendeva ottimi sostituti dei dipinti più costosi. I soggetti prediletti dagli artisti di ukiyo-e erano i paesaggi; soprattutto questo tipo di stampe entrarono nell’immaginario e nella memoria degli europei: ancora oggi tutti abbiamo in mente le famose vedute del monte Fuji o la Grande Onda di Hokusai. Altrettanto rappresentate, però, erano le scene di vita cittadina e, tra queste, un particolare tipo acquisì molta popolarità: quelle ambientate nelle case di piacere.Il “Tao dell’amore”: tutti i segreti dell’erotismo cinese.Questo particolare genere prese il nome di shunga, cioè “pittura di primavera“, un modo per indicare eufemisticamente il rapporto sessuale. Le persone coinvolte nei rapporti raffigurati dagli shunga erano generalmente una cortigiana (la geisha) e il suo cliente: il pittore li coglieva mentre erano intenti a sperimentare diverse posizioni, alcune anche molto curiose e ardite. The Spanish governor of California, Felipe De Neve, named it El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles Sobre el Rio de Porciuncula in 1871. I painted the background with this fiery sunset, referencing these sunsets from my balcony and the title of the exhibition L.A. on Fire (curated by #MichaelSlenske at @wildingcrangallery). I also took pictures of the downtown skyline from #LittleTokyo, and then I placed this #Japanese goddess, the Queen of the Dragons, hovering ominously over the skyline with this dragon coiling around her and the office towers. It’s unclear what her motives are, but I’ve painted her eyes in a way that suggests she could be protecting us or meditating on how we’ve been behaving and what we’ve made of ourselves. She represents these powerful forces, much more powerful than us, that could be a premonition of things to come. Many have asked about the meaning of my fight name , Iansã. In short, She is an Afro-Brazilian Orisha/goddess in Candomblé. The nickname was given to me by my Capoeira Mestre, Contra-Mestre Perere. No as representation of religious beliefs, but as a depiction of my spiritual and physical strength. “In 2011, Perere started the group Vadiacao de Oxossi to complement the Capoeira Angola tradition with more bushcraft skills to develop a balanced and flexible outlook on life.” I felt in love with the art and his teachings. Being around members of the group, made me feel… normal at last. My capoeira group became my family. I learned to harmonize with my environment, enjoy simple pleasures and defend my peace. 🙏 A couple a weeks ago, Grace Marty, an artist and fan contacted me and asked if she could do some art work for me. I was thrilled and humbled. I sent her an image of me with my hands “in prayer”. She wanted to do something with it and asked if I go to church or sacred space. I remembered capoeira’s ring/ roda became my sacred space and for a few years I have felt a strong connection with Andre Hora’s depiction of Iansã . @andrehoraart is a Brazilian/British visual artist based in Manchester UK. Andre gave us permission to use his image for this purpose and this is the end result. “When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The past few days I’ve been binge-rewatching Avatar The Last Airbender, because almost everyone and their mom has been lately. I’m glad I’ve spent the time to rewatch it because I’ve caught a lot more watching it again now that I’m older and also using it as a good personal refresher. Like many people, especially as an extrovert, I’ve been pretty down with all this quarantine and social distancing but it’s also been a good time to reflect. I’ve always felt my personality to be very similar to Aang’s so it’s been really cool and motivational to see how he overcomes his many hardships, struggles and purpose while staying true to his character and beliefs, even if he is a fictional character. Anyways, here’s a throwback to when I cosplayed as Aang!
