I havent been posting much because Instagram brings me down. This is the longest Ive been home in four or five years and the stillness is uncomfortable, driving a restive spirit who thrives on chaos to the point of madness. Serenity is an elusive state of mind, but Ive learned a few things about myself this year. Its unfortunate that I had to be dragged kicking and screaming into self-reflection by global events that nobody could control, but after months of being deprived of the constant bustle and distraction of touring, Im learning to be okay with myself. Im learning to shake off the feelings of self-consciousness and power through the anxiety. Im learning to challenge my own thinking and change my behaviors. Dear Junior and Jon, We left @lostandfoundmidtown and headed to @bellestationhtx instead. Others headed to @oportomidtown Why? Dress code. That’s fine, but I highly encourage you to apply it equally across the board. I was let in as an Asian American female wearing “joggers”, a cut up long sleeve shirt, and a beanie. After 5 minutes, I was approached by an employee, telling me I’d get a discount if I left for 10 minutes and then came back, because another group was complaining about me being let in. That group was a couple of black males who were there to meet up with friends, and were NOT let in, even though they were wearing stylish joggers and a fitted vest/dressy shirt. They rightfully called out this instance of institutional racism. I only found out after walking to the front, where I heard the manager speaking to them. The employee told me it would be extremely convenient for them (the bar) if I went home and changed. Several members of our group had arrived by now, ready to celebrate a friend’s birthday. During this time, several black males were turned away, wearing very put-together streetwear outfits that celebrated their creativity. Would you have turned @travisscott away? His @astroworld mural is plastered on the wall of your parking lot. Did you turn @champagnepapi away last week? What about @deshaunwatson, @bunb? They inspire the clothes your potential customers are wearing. We later saw a few white women who walked in with hoodies. We were told the dress code was for branding purposes. Branding is more than what something looks like. It is how you and your staff choose to act, the values you live by; it’s in not profiting off minority cultures, while at the same time shutting your door to them. That’s why we left. We won’t be back until there is a change in the way you operate. I moved to London 4 years ago today,probably the worst time to move here but thank you to the people that encouraged (and also discouraged) me to go. I’ve managed to do things and meet people I would’ve never imagined meeting and also cooked with chefs and worked in restaurants that I didn’t think I was worthy of.
