May you wield your patriotism like a beacon of liberation and progress, not as a weapon of oppression and stagnation. Over the past months we have had to be collectively reminded again that Black Lives Matter, that brutality by the government against its own citizens is evil. And in that time we have also celebrated Pride month and Juneteenth. I hope you have been paying attention. We can be a repentant nation disgusted at what we have become and still believe in the ideals drawn from this nation. This country was founded on a minority of people defying their government and the status quo to create a new thing out of the old. It wasn’t perfect then, and it isn’t perfect now. The ideals put forth are timeless, striving for something impossible: true liberation. It is hard to be an American. It is tiring. You are either moving forward or falling behind. We don’t keep perfect pace together. Someone will always be out ahead of you beckoning you on toward true liberation. And in light of that call, you will harden your heart — or open it. I hope this Independence Day is different for you—not because of Covid. I pray that your relationship to America is more complicated than ever and your definition of America is wider and richer and more diverse than ever. Happy Fourth. We are posting today our pictures and stories from the 1992-1995 Bosnia War to stand up for the truth and for war victims. Read Peter Maass stories in the Intercept for more info on Austrian writer #PeterHandke. It was August 1992 and Srebrenica was already besieged by the Bosnian Serbs, tactic was to ensure no food was coming in and people would surrender. In the end the UN stationed Dutchbat, a poorly armed Dutch unit who had to protect the people. Mea Culpa guys. I am ignorant in a variety of ways, of which the following is just one. But the photographer whose work I just posted prior to this (and have since deleted) is not black. I had always thought (for years) that he was, having never seen a picture of him and having failed to see his race mentioned in any profiles I have read about him. I am sorry for briefly sharing misinformation. I wanted to highlight beautiful work by black photographers I admire this morning. I will continue to do so, but with more care. I am sorry for my mistake. Next up is Charles “Teenie” Harris, who was a photographer who lived and worked most of his life in Pittsburgh. He earned the nickname “one shot” for his tendency to score a phenomenal capture with just one press of the shutter. Something many of us modern photographers with our constant chimping on our digital cameras could stand to take a lesson from! These photos in order are: (1) Two young women eating caramel apples 1940-1945 (2) Duke Ellington at a piano with dancer Honey Coles and Billy Strayhorn looking on, in the Stanley Theatre, 1942-1943 (3) Six male relay racers carrying batons approaching finish line in stadium c. 1940 (an astoundingly good capture for this time!!) (4) Bride wearing gown with sheer floral overlay and veil and groom wearing light colored tuxedo and boutonnière with arm around bride, seated in back seat of car, 1957 (I love the expressions he has captured on each of them - her pure joy, and his quiet and serene marveling at his luck in wedding that joyful woman) - @earlybirdphoto on Instagram

Estás dos palabras resonaron una y otra vez en mi mente, a lo largo de los años en diferentes situaciones, y variados panoramas. Pero por alguna razón, siempre lograban ser completamente acertadas. Recuerdo que frente a cada desafío que se me presentaba, en especial los que me frustraban, porque aún dando lo mejor de mi no podía lograr buenos resultado. Ella me repetía esta simple y mágica oración. Que automáticamente me hacía cambiar el foco. Lo realmente importante era intención, no el desenlace. Si ponía todo mi amor, y buena voluntad, ya bastaba. “Acordate, con amor. La intención que le podemos a todo lo que hacemos es lo realmente importante” Ahora, me lo repito yo misma es mi cabeza cuando algo me da miedo, duda o siento que no puedo desenredar un hilo en particular. “Con amor” es una de las mejores enseñanzas que me dieron en mi vida.
