Roughly one and a half hours north of Manhattan lies one of the oldest fjords in North America which helps create a unique macro climate that allows high quality wines to be produced in the valley. The @fjordvineyards Cabernet Franc is one such wine ~ intense floral notes overtop of black olive, green coffee bean and just ripe blackberries. Matt & Casey (owners of this very youthful project) farm with the earth in mind ~ they ask themselves at each step in the processs ‘can this be done differently with less negative impact’. As Matt puts it ‘we feed them (the vines) good food to keep them healthy, but we are not afraid to give them medicine when they are sick’. Montalcino is not particularly famous, except for the goodness of its wines” (Charles Thompson, 1744). Generally when tasting a young Brunello, it’s full of fruit: think cherry, dried cranberry, blackberry and strawberry along with aromatic notes of violet, licorice and potpourri. Young Brunellos will be tannic with a high acidity. They’re typically earthy, with a jammy flavour and a hint of espresso. Brunello is meant to be drank with some age to it, and when done the wine is in perfect harmony with the tannins and acidity levels, you’ll find dried figs, candied cherries, hazelnuts and leather. Wine has been produced in Montalcino since before the Middle Ages. It was Clemente Santi that is considered Brunello’s founding father, with his 1865 vintage of Brunello. Brunello di Montalcino received DOC status in 1966, then in 1980 it was one of the first regions to become DOCG. Being certified as DOCG means following the rules, such as the wine can only be made with Sangiovese Grosso (locally called simply Brunello). The vines can only come from the historical boarders of Montalcino, which is 24,000 hectares, and of that about 15% is planted with vines. The max yields of grapes must be less than 8 tons per hectare. A Brunello has to spend at least 2 years in wooden barrels, 4 months in bottle or 6 months if it is a Riserva. The wine cannot be released onto the market for 5 years after harvest, or 6 years if it is Riserva. Brunello has to have a minimum alcohol of 12.5%, and a min total acid level of 5g/l. The bottle type is set in the rules, so it can only be a Bordelaise bottle and has to have a cork - no screw caps here! Soils are varied in Montalcino: lower altitudes are mostly made up of loose soils, the higher up you go the denser the soil becomes. The bulk of the area is covered in marl, limestone, and galestro, with some fossilized marine deposits scattered throughout. With altitudes ranging from 120 to 650 meters above sea level, it should come as no surprise that all the work in the vineyards are done by hand. Klein Constantia originally formed part of Constantia, a magnificent estate granted to the 10th commander of the Cape of Good Hope, Simon van der Stel, in 1685. The vast property was sub-divided several times over the centuries, but the lusciously sweet wines of Constantia were famous within a remarkably short period of time – savoured by royalty, given pride of place in the cellars of the world’s greatest wine collectors, and immortalised by the best poets and authors of the 18th & 19th centuries. Klein Constantia dates back to a sub-division that occurred in early 1800s when the so-called Little Constantia (measuring 146 hectares) already had 33,000 vines planted in its decomposed granite soils, stretching up high slopes with superb views across the valley to False Bay. Unfortunately, production of sweet Constantia wine ceased during the late 1800s for a number of reasons including vine disease & Britain’s termination of preferential import duties for Cape wines. It was only when the Jooste family bought Klein Constantia in 1980 that production of one of the world’s greatest dessert wines resumed, with the name Vin de Constance, alongside a range of cool-climate dry wines. Unquestionably, the pick of the bunch has been @pewseyvalevineyard from Eden Valley. This Contours (Museum Release) 1998, bought at auction, was a pristine example of mature Riesling. I’ve always questioned the ageing potential of even the best Aussie stuff. They just never seem to hold as well as the old world... this wine has changed my mind. In contrast this 2017 was the maiden vintage of their “1961 block” Riesling from the oldest vines on the estate. This wine has everything that you could want from a new world Riesling and is, without question, the finest example I have ever encountered. When Jorge came to the US in 1987 without a college degree and speaking no English, Garnacha was Spain and Earth’s most widely planted red grape variety. In spite of this, it was lambasted by the Spanish wine media and winemakers as oxidative, low quality, and unable to stand alone as a varietal wine. Jorge was one of the very first champions of this historic variety, which is indigenous to the towering mountains of Aragón. The 2008 Cardinale was the wine of the week for me- a classic Napa cab and just a big beautiful wine that we paired with a t-bone. It’s always a treat to open a Wendouree though even with a couple of hours of time, I felt this was opened too early. They really do need almost 8-10 years cellaring. Still special. Really enjoyed Jay’s 2006 EIEIO Old Block Canary Hill- tons of life left and I am very happy to have another bottle left! Thanks to Alban and Bedrock for guiding me through my Fantasy Football draft. Tango Oaks Vineyard At Tango Oaks, the soil itself is ‘new’, as the twenty-foot deep layer of gravel was deposited there by the epic flood of 1935. With Riesling vines erupting out of these stones, and not much topsoil to speak of, Tango Oaks always results in the most elegant, mineral, and filigreed style of Riesling from Red Newt. But despite this rounded richness, the actual body remains sinuous, slender, bright. It is vivid with enlivening, soothing freshness and the cool chalky depth of the Côte des Blancs. It is the very austerity of these soils that stands in beautiful and compelling contrast to the buttery richness – this pulls the most glorious trick. On the finish there is a fine, textured seaweed saltiness paired with an incipient, mouth-watering bitterness that draws you in. It makes the next sip compulsive. #DicadoSommelier Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvignon 2016: Tinto chileno, varietal da onipresente cepa Cabernet Sauvignon (a variedade que certamente melhor se adaptou ao terroir do país), produzido pela Concha y Toro. Um gigante vinícola. Assim pode ser definida a Concha y Toro, vinícola fundada em 1883 por Don Melchor de Concha y Toro e hoje responsável por mais de 30% das exportações de vinho chileno. Exporta para mais de 110 países e domina cerca de 35% do mercado interno. Possui vinhedos por praticamente todas as regiões vinícolas do Chile, na Argentina (Trivento) e adquiriu há pouco tempo a californiana Fetzer Vineyards, cujo varietal de Cabernet Sauvignon foi avaliado aqui recentemente. No Brasil, é bastante conhecida por seus rótulos Reservado e Casillero del Diablo, vinhos varietais de diversas cepas, facilmente encontrados em supermercados. Outras linhas de destaque: Carmín de Peumo, Don Melchor (emancipada desde 2017), o icônico Almaviva (este uma joint-venture com a francesa Baron Philippe de Rothschild), Terrunyo e Marques de Casa Concha, objeto de análise deste post, entre outros. Ao vinho: Limpido e levemente opaco, coloração média para mais em intensidade, rubi com halo levemente alaranjado; aromas francos, fragrantes, de média intensidade, secundários, com boa fruta em compota, mentolado, groselha, baunilha, chocolate amargo. A rustic atmosphere of gun-slinging outlaws and Pinkertons rain down retribution upon the American Nazi party in 1939. Perfectly paired with Porta Del Vento’s 2016 Perricone, a deep draw of this wine bares an intense cowhide bouquet and flashbacks of cattle barons and train heists overtake your senses. Your first quaff endows the palette with pastoral adumbrations of farmhouse raspberry and boot-lickin anise. Tame acids and tannins partner well with callous and at times almost monochromatic colors by Jacob Phillips. With a short maceration in cement this wine encapsulates the grit of 1930’s New York, to only be adorned by Sean Phillips’ brazen and wonderfully asperous art. The story itself, a pressure-cooker of looming death and violence, is perfectly exemplified by Ed Brubaker. CONNECTION TO LAND: Vigneron Gilles Gasq has devoted Domaine la Manarine to organic viticulture, practicing organic production since 2011. Much of Domaine la Manarines field work is done by hand, including pruning and de-budding of vines. Grenache Noir vines are perfectly suited to the terroir of the Rhone Valley, requiring little intervention. La Manarine rouge is produced with indigenous yeasts and no fining or filtration. The latest vintage @coterotie_stephaneogier wines have arrived and needless to say we are pretty excited. There are some new offerings along with the return of some our favourites and a top-up of the excellent 2017 La Rosine. While Ogier is still a relative newcomer to the top ranks of the wine-making world he has garnered a humungous reputation globally in a relatively short time. Thats an incredible achievement and testament to the quality of the estate which up until 1980 sold the entire crop, on the vine, to Chapoutier and Guigal. At the top of that list is the La Rosine, a perennial favourite. If you are not familiar with the wine, the fruit comes from a plot just outside of the southern limit of Cote Rotie and just before Condrieu - Cote Rotie in all but name. True to form the 2017 looks fantastic and offers, we think, some of the best value drinking you could hope to find anywhere. I was extremely fortunate to attend two fantastic verticals of Brunello last week. 4 decades of Val di Suga Vigna Spuntali, from the current vintage 2015, to 2010, 2001, 1995 and finally the first vintage ever made in 1988. Andrea Lonardi did an amazing job in explaining the terroir approach of Val di Suga in Montalcino and the aging potential of this single-vineyard. Like if it wasn’t enough, I had the privilege of going through 8 vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva that celebrate the life of Franco, from 2012, his last vintage, to 2010, 2006, 1998, 1995, 1983, 1975 and finishing with his first, the 1971. Incredible to see how these wines age and get better with time preserving acidity, fruit and mostly elegance. 2007 Barbaresco Santo Stefano di Albesani di Neive - Bruno Giacosa - Producing some of Italy’s (let alone Piemontese) best wines Bruna Giacosa (Bruno’s daughter) is a name synonymous with Nebbiolo. The vines in this case come from a small zone of Albesani (Neive) called Santo Stefano which with the combination of soil, altitude and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe. 2007 brought with it some very warm and dry weather, some vineyards were effected by hail meaning a small crop but the fruit that remained was high in quality. Just starting to drink well, wines like these have years ahead of them, I for one cannot wait to see how they develop! - - 2015 Vitovska - Marco Fon - Marco farms just 4 hectares of vines in Kras (Carso) in Slovenia. Here he uses an indigenous grape called Vitovska most commonly associated with Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The area shares some very similar soils to it’s slightly more famous neighbour including the predominant Limestone (Kras) soil that gives it’s name to the region. Here under it’s local name of Garganja Marco harvest his 50 year old vines before a short maceration of 4 days on skins and the wine is transferred to large old wooden barrels for a total of two years. Smooth Ambler Contradiction Bourbon ABV: 46% This batch of Contradiction is a blend of straight bourbons containing 27% of a 2 year old wheated bourbon made in-house at the Smooth Ambler distillery, along with 73% of a 9 year old rye based bourbon sourced from MGP in Indiana. For Contradiction, the bourbons are blended and then re-casked in their original barrels for an additional three months. The 2 year bourbon consists of a mashbill of 60% corn, 20% wheat, and 20% malted barley. The 9 year bourbon contains a mashbill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley, and is normally bottled and sold as Smooth Ambler Old Scout. The end result is a blended bourbon that contains a four grain blend, consisting of corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. Color: Deep Copper Nose: Aromas of oak, runny honey, clove and fragrant allspice, with a lovely combo of brown sugar and cocoa. Palate: Initially soft with touches of sweet and sticky honey and molasses, though gradually builds to stronger spicy notes. To celebrate 5 years of importing Rey Campero we are releasing this super delicious field blend of 4 agaves! I had the opportunity to taste this back in March of 2019 and thought it was so special that it needed to be held for our 5 year celebration that got kind of lost like a lot of things in 2020. -sadly there are only 44 cases of this mezcal which was produced in February 2019 and rested in glass carboys for 15 months. Girls, let me start by telling you about Italy’s “Oscar del Vino,” the most important prize in the Italian wine sector, hosted by Fondazione Italiana Sommelier, Italian Sommelier Foundation. The founder of Oscar del Vino is Antonio Ricci, then-president of the foundation in 1999. Since then, the annual event has grown into the single most crucial wine contest in the country. Thirty wines under ten categories, thus three labels per category, selected by the Academy of Oscar del Vino, are voted on by over 600 people from all over the country for the final selection of Italy’s finest wines every year. ⠀ To be nominated as the top three wines under each category is already a great honor and recognition for quality since Italy produces as many wines as there are stars in the night sky. It’s hard NOT to fall in love with this wine Chateau Labegorce2016 Tremendous passion, proficiency and enthusiasm translate to a wine that will not disappoint always a great value buy now open it later (3yrs min if you have patience) 2016 Château Labégorce is a head-turner of a Margaux that’s based on 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was brought up in 45% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Sexy notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed flowers, sandalwood, and incense all flow to a medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured Margaux that carries ripe tannins, loads of fruit and richness, and a great finish. The vines average 30 years of age, with the oldest vines, of which there are just four hectares, dating from between 1902 and 1950. More date from 1951 to 1985, whereas a quarter date from 1989 when extensive replanting took place. Vineyard practices involve careful use of chemicals, with no herbicide used at all, and yields are typically 50 hl/ha. Harvesting is by hand, and fermentation begins with a short, cold maceration followed by a temperature controlled process. Each parcel of vines, of which there are many, is vinified separately. Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2018 Cape of Good Hope and Antonij Rupert very generously gifted me a beautifully packaged box of goodies with the loveliest handwritten letter. Free wine is great…but, if you know me…you know it’s not really my thing. What is my thing is when you tell me a story about your wine, and that story stops me in my tracks, and sends me down a fascinating rabbit hole to learn more about the admirable efforts and initiatives to save and treasure the Old Vines in South Africa. Also…as far as I’m concerned, spring starts on 1 September and what could be more spring appropriate than Sauvignon Blanc? Pale lemon with a pronounced nose of passion fruit, guava leaves, pineapple, asparagus, lemon zest, tinned peas, and yes…cut grass. Textbook. Off dry? There’s definitely some RS. High acidity, medium- body because of the slinkiness to the mouthfeel that counteracts the infamous jarring acidity of Sauv Blanc. Lime cordial is a pretty good descriptor because it has a similar feel, lemon peel, pineapple, a touch of herbal that we’re going to call grass for continuity. A decent medium+ finish that’s mostly zingy citrus and slightly bitter lemon peel…though, I’m really enjoying finding pockets of fruitiness hiding on my gums. The silky texture (along with the slight RS) are what stand out for me. There’s absolutely no chance, but I think this would make a good candidate for ageing. Aged SB is a revelation! Continental climates aren’t something you often hear about in SA…and I’m fascinated by the more extreme regions and their effect on the grape growing in Altima in cool climate Elandskloof. Fun fact, they’ve also cultivated Black Perold truffles…can you say yum! I’ve always loved reading and listening to the story of Rosa Kruger and the Old Vine Project that was sponsored by Johan Rupert. What I never really grasped was that these terroir specific Cape of Good Hope wines form part of an initiative to celebrate and protect South Africa’s wine heritage. You’ll see some more posts over the next few weeks…but what I hope you’ll also see is me learning more about our Old Vines, as well as the people invested in protecting them. - @capeofgoodwine on Instagram

so gutted to have to leave NZ over a month earlier than originally planned. I had intended to stay a few weeks and work on the 2020 harvest, but NZ has now gone into an extremely strict 4 week total lock down and so I’ve managed to get the last flight back to London to self quarantine and wait for Bermuda to reopen its airport. I have to say I totally commend both countries in their efforts to help control ***the C world*** and I don’t want to talk about that here. But here are a few thoughts on NZ... Hands down this country is outstanding. I have no words to describe just how physically beautiful it is. My photos do it no justice whatsoever. But what really blew me away was how wonderful New Zelanders are. I have never before met a country filled with such authentically kind and lovely people. I had the pleasure of meeting a few Kiwis in London in the wine trade (and if you’re reading this, you know who you are!) and I presumed it was just a coincidence that you were all chilled, with a great sense of humour, a penchant for a party and an authentic interest in others. But it turns out everyone in NZ is like that! I am truly overwhelmed with how utterly cool you all are, and I am completely obsessed with you all. Australasia is the only place on earth that knows how to do breakfast. The rest of the world should just give up. I include coffee in this. The wine. Wow. I had planned to tour the entire country after the harvest had wrapped up, but my brief stint in Central Otago and Martinborough (the two Pinot Noir hotspots) have cemented my love for what the New World can do, and if you are stuck at home and ordering wine for delivery I implore you to check out some NZ examples. They’re unbelievably underrated and provide great value. It would be supporting some excellent humans too. NZ is unbelievably clean, self-sufficient, environmentally conscious and forward thinking in its attitudes to climate change, pollution and reducing our carbon footprint. Reserva 2013: Aroma a fruta madura y madera, color Intenso con bordes castaños. Vino suave en el paladar con tanino amargo en los bordes de la lengua y sensación creciente de tostado bajo ella. . Gran Reserva 2004 Aroma de fruta roja madura con notas de compota, rojo con evolución en borde la copa a tonos naranjas-amarillentos de capa media. Cálido y balsámico en boca con recuerdo a frutos secos maduros y fondo tánico. . They both come from a Riojan cooperative Reserva 2013: Ripe Fruit and wood aroma, intense colour with chestnut tree drawings. Soft wine on palate with bitter tannin on tongue sides and growing feeling of roasting below it Gran Reserva 2004: Ripe berries aroma with jam drawings, red with a transition to a orange-yellowish colour on glass edges. Balsamic and warm with a slight ripe nuts and tannic taste They are both perfect for a special dinnner or a barbecue with friends. Step by step the harvest continues… Today we harvest the Goldmuskateller or Moscato Giallo grapes for our passito #vinalia The Messnerhof is located at 560m above sea level in St. Georgen, above the South Tyrolean capital Bozen. The selected grapes are carefully placed in these small boxes, in it they are air dried for almost half a year. During this period the grapes lose more than 80% of their original weight. After the gentle pressing, the must is slowly fermented in French barriques. 👉 The Vinalia has notes of ripe apricot, pineapple, sugar melon and peaches.
