One time in college, I went out walking in the hills with a friend of mine. At some point as we meandered through the woods, the What-Are-You-Going-To-Do-To-Change-The-World conversation came up. . No one can change the world, my friend said. There are billions of people & half of them are doing the exact opposite thing youre doing. Its why the world pretty much stays the same. . He had a very mathematic view of the world. Elegant. Seamless. Clean. Structured. Which made sense, since he was a mathematician. For him, it was as simple as that. Do the thing you do & let other people do the thing they do... . He wasnt going to fix people, or help them, or point out where they could do things better. I see now that hed come to understand what can take a very long time to learn: that most people dont want to be fixed, or helped as if theyre incapable. Were all incredibly capable & sometimes, circumstances are just too much. Circumstances like money & health & bad luck & systems that decide who gets access based on color & gender & what you believe & who you love... . The curious thing to me now, years later, is seeing almost no circumstance is too much for a larger community, or the world itself. Were watching it happen & making it happen in real time right now. Which means, in all likelihood, it was never too much... . Perhaps its why the Bhodhisattvas make a vow to return for as many lifetimes as it takes for all beings to be free of suffering. Not because they think that they alone will be able to change the world & free us all. But that they may be that one more pair of hands at the right time to help move someone, or a group of someones, a little bit closer to who they want to be... . I wish that for us all... . with love, kai #flyingedna #actionplan #brianandreas - @brianandreas on Instagram

little things follow @justin.lal for more poetry it’s the little things that count, the goofy stuff you can do with that person that you just can’t do with someone else. even the very regular, seemingly boring things in life can mean the world with the right person by your side. #poetrydaily #poetryaccount #poetryofinsta #shortpoetry #poetrylover #poetrytribe #poetrylife #poetrynetworking #poetryreading #poetryforthesoul #poetcommunity #poetryaddict #igpoem #writerstag #writerscircle #loveprose #writersblock #poetsofig #poetryart #shayari #writewithrupi #writerscommunity #poetry #writersofinstagrampoetry #poetsempire #poemsociety #writinglove #poetrywriting #likeforlikes - @justin.lal on Instagram

.....back in the mirror 100 days after the incident. Dark days Laxmi with her family Laxmi was so traumatised that she contemplated suicide. But thinking of the pain she would cause her parents, she decided to end such thoughts. Instead, Laxmi chose to confide in her parents, who encouraged her to seek counselling. Simultaneously, she also decided to take her case to the court, and the trial went on for four years. The result: Guddu was sentenced to 10 years in jail, and Rakhi was imprisoned for seven years. But before all this, Laxmi languished under the mental and physical toll of the attack. For months, she was unable to wear any clothes and would stay under a blanket. Managing menstrual hygiene, when even a thin strip of cloth weighed her bruised body down, was an additional cross for Laxmi to bear. Laxmi’s seven surgeries took place over the course of seven years and cost around Rs 20 lakh. Her father’s savings and his employer at that time helped the family bear the cost financially. Emerging from the darkness Laxmi with her daughter But change was afoot for Laxmi, who refused to be enslaved by the injustice meted out to her. Slowly, with her parents’ support, she gained confidence and decided to start her diploma in vocational training at the National Institute of Open Schooling, Delhi. And in 2009, another big change happened. “One day, I saw myself in the mirror and thought, ‘what is the use of doing a beautification and tailoring course if I cover my face?’ I decided that I had nothing to be ashamed of and I removed the dupatta and started walking freely,” she recalls. This move was met with a lot of resistance from her community and girls in her institution, but Laxmi was unfazed. With the support of her teacher and the institution, Laxmi completed her diploma. #stopacidattacks #acidattack #acidattacksurvivors #acidvictims - @stop_acidattack on Instagram
