2019 has been an incredibly busy and eventful year for me personally and professionally. We’re back after a week’s hiatus to break down the school-to-prison pipeline. As of 2019, over 48,000 youth in the United States are confined in facilities away from home as a result of juvenile justice or criminal justice involvement every single day (@prisonpolicy). Last week the conversation and outrage continued as Grace, the 15-year-old Black girl, was denied release from juvenile detention after being detained for not doing her homework. I don’t think there could be a more poignant time for @officialspikelee 𝐃𝐚 𝟓 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 to be released: This film tells the story of 4 black veterans who “battle the forces of man and nature when they return to Vietnam seeking the remains of their fallen Squad Leader, and the gold fortune he helped them hide.” While recording in the orchestra for this film, we came to a cue where Spike needed something different. He had the entire orchestra come to a halt so that we could watch the scene with audio. Once out of the booth, he eloquently explained the importance of this particular scene and why the music needed to capture immense depth, in a very ethereal and powerful way. We instantly felt the tremendous weight of the scene, and once it ended, you could hear a pin drop on the scoring stage. Without wasting a beat, we immediately started recording the cue once again, and the difference was night and day. It almost sent me into a full blown ugly cry on the damn Sony Scoring Stage 😂 All of this said, I am so fortunate to do what I do for a living and cherish the marriage between film and music. I am also very honored to have recorded on @terence_blanchard’s score and happy to see more black creatives doing extraordinary things in this world. Be sure to “add it to your list” on 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐱, as it releases this 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟏𝟐𝐭𝐡. After a conversation with her about her legacy, I came across this article about her. She spent her life as activist, an advocate and a trail blazer in the British Black Women’s Liberation Movement. The article reminded me of how much I had admired her politics as a young girl. It’s hard to believe it but last month marked 10 years since the original release of @thestuyvesants’ “Brooklyn’s Finest” album. I can’t really put in to words how much this record means to me. I started working on it at a time when I was struggling and seriously considering quitting making beats. But putting this album out completely broke me out of that mentality and lead to countless accolades, music opportunities and personal connections that I could have never anticipated. So many amazing memories were created around this project. When ever I listen to it now, I’m immediately transported back to the Brooklyn summer of 2010, and all of it’s Black culture that we intentionally tried to capture in the music. The entire project is completely art-directed, produced and released independently by @darienbirks and myself—no label or marketing campaigns at all. It’s entirely a labor of love and up to this point it has only existed in a digital form but it’s always been a dream of mine to have it exist in a more permanent format. To commemorate a decade of the original release, we started a campaign to fund a small vinyl pressing run so that both us and our fans can have something tangible to hold on to and remember the good times. It all started 2017 with the Nenets, reindeer herders from the Yamal peninsula, then came the Mundari, cow herders from South Sudan and after that the Changpa, goat herders from Kashmir. I’ll be in conversation with Guadalupe Maravilla, who will speak about his work on immigration, detention, trauma and healing through sound. I’ll be talking about Black rage. Black rage is borne of chronic waiting. It is a product of both immediate and ancient grievances waiting to be heard and repaired. Its relationship to time is both immaterial and precise. Its timeline folds back on itself, winds around, gets lost in a cocoon of false social progress. Our experience of Black rage moves at the speed of our ancestors’ accumulated suffering, an avalanche you can hear coming from centuries away. It slows, suspends, and elongates when we collectively exhale in light of a symbolic policy victory. It exudes urgency when ignited by a George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, or Tony McDade. We bide the passing time enraged, making others wait while we protest in busy streets, and practicing various freedoms to prepare us for the real thing. INSPIRATION: I finally had a moment to watch this documentary film titled “The Black Godfather.” Clarence Avant is the Jedi Master of deal making, teacher, mentor and advocate for Black creatives and executives. He was behind some of the most pivotal movements in entertainment and political history. But for me, the deeper message in the film is the gift of sharing knowledge and educating each other on how to play the game. And the importance of being a good human being with character and the power of friendship and ally ship.
